This is the frame of my 89 S10 Blazer. I’d say it’s in pretty good condition as the steel still rings but I want to prevent its destruction as much as I can. Is a wire wheel on a grinder then hitting with rustoleum the move? Are there better options than that? There’s some spots I won’t be able to get as I can’t remove the body from the frame
Fastest, easiest method that requires zero sanding/wire wheeling is Fluid Film. Spray or brush it on and work it in. Viola, done. There are other products that work the same…you’re choice ( I’ve used Fluid Film for years with great success)
Quick question how does fluid film hold up when you mudding and constantly around dirt ?
It “wears” pretty good. Waterproof and takes a lot of “rubbing” to wipe it completely off. Easy to reapply if you think you wore it off mudding. Just power wash and spray on a new coat.

Do not remove that rust. It’s protecting the metal underneath. This isn’t problematic rust at all
If you decide to go that route. Wire wheels and sanding. BUT THEN you MUST PUT AN UNDER COATING LIKE PAINT on the car or it’ll rust even harder.
I was leaning towards putting an undercoating on it anyways as i live in Pennsylvania and 35 year old cars are usually a pile of rust by this point
No under coating. A rust converter then a top coat. Follow instructions on rust converter. It needs some rust so don’t get it bare.
Do not use a rubberized undercoating. Moisture will eventually find its way in, and the undercoating will trap it.
Use fluid film or a similar product. I had similar rust on my Jeep. I knocked it off with a wire brush, hit it with fluid film, and haven’t had an issue since.
Yeah then clean it with a wire brush and sander. Then undercoat it to protect it.

Ill agree this isnt a huge deal right now, most of these trucks look worse than this. However if left untreated, over time it will get worse. Rust holes dont form overnight.
Best, easiest, and cheapest way is a side grinder with a stiff wire wheel, wear saftey glasses. Then coat it with POR-15.
Structural steel for instance has a type of steel that specifically light rusts like this to prevent heavy rust.
Dude below is definitely just being a dick but also automakers (especially not GM) are not using that kind of purposefully-rusting steel on frames.
They did not design the steel of frames on cars to be the same as the Statue of Liberty. That’s fucking dumb

You should alert auto makers. You'll save them a fortune on undercoating to prevent rust. Just use rust.
Either soak the car in a product like fluid film, or take it somewhere that will dry ice blast and seal with the wax like coating. Check out Sublime Surfacing on Instagram to see the latter.
Fluid film or surface shield right over top of the rust. Maybe knock any loose stuff off with a wire wheel first. You can get it dyed black if you wish.
No undercoat! That stuff is junk. Use a stiff wire brush and then coat it with a heavy coat of fluid film or wool wax.

Is there an applicator of POR15 that’s spray on? All the stores near me have ones that say you’re supposed to soak the item in it. Can’t do that with a frame obviously
You apply with a sponge brush. It's self-leveling and covers a lot of area.
Apparently it can be sprayed after a small thinning, but a paint brush would be fine for your frame.
This is the way.
Wire wheel then Por15 or chassis paint.
I would give it a quick once over light sanding to remove any loose rust. The use a rust converter then top coat with something durable.
Inside I’d use easy woods internal frame coat paint. It’s a zinc paint that converts light rust as well.

As per an older post - apparently it doesn't really inhibit rust as well as advertised, and it does deteriorate with UV light thus needing a top coat of sorts, so that said - wire wheel, rust reformer, sandpaper, and some really bulletproof sealant.
It doesn’t need protectant as it’s under the car.
And it works great. I have personal experience with it.
