We found these two in our yard with muck all over them (mud or poop?). No bands but they couldn’t fly which is why we brought them in. We supplied some fresh water and wild bird seed we had lying around. We want to help clean them up but not sure how! TIA! -Would like to add that we don’t see pigeons in this area either which is another reason why we want to help :)
much better! those poops are looking better too. They may be mates because they are always cuddled up together. Pupils look very big which can sometimes be a sign of a concussion in which case keep the lighting dim and let them rest.
If needed we may be able to help you connect with a pigeon-friendly rescue to rehome them or give care instructions if you wish to adopt. Please feel free to give an update post about them
Yes we think so too! I have made sure to do just that, only turning the light on to take a good photo. I looked on the FB link you shared and a post actually had a comment from a local pigeon rescue! (Such a coincidence). We are hoping to eventually find them a good home as we just are not up for long term pigeon care 😅
I thank you so much for your help and advice. It has helped tremendously. I will definitely be sure to keep this post updated! 🐦
so happy to hear this. Thanks to you and your husband for saving them
Thank you for getting them cleaned up. I guarantee they appreciate it
I'd be worried about rhe conditions they're kept in based on their feathers. Has their living space ever been cleaned? If you're of a loving nature you may be a better home for these babies
We were thinking the same but could also depend on how long they’ve been out for. We are big animal lovers but with 2 dogs (1 being 4 months), a toddler, and a house being updated not sure if we have the time 😅
2 birds keep to themselves very well and would require less time than a solo bird. They can also stay outside if you'd like to build a predator proof enclosure for them. Given enough space and room you'd only have to worry about daily feed and water. Everything else could probably be done as needed as long as they have the company of their companion bird. Of course everyone's life is different and some people have more spoons (time and ability to be involved) than others. I hope this finds a peaceful resolution but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about the original owners husbandry. On top of their feathers, clipped wings and free roaming is another huge red flag
I was talking with my husband earlier and we figured if we couldn’t find a foster easily then we will do just that! Our dogs are indoor dogs (hunting breeds as well) and seem to make the birds very nervous. We will keep these babies with us until we have time to build an outdoor enclosure for them.
thanks for posting, it looks like the attached image is unavailable for some reason.
Are they eating on their own? pooping?
Hope this one goes through! But yes both have pooped what I think is normal pigeon poop and both seem to be eating normal.
They look a bit under the weather and that poop looks a bit bright and a bit runny, so they may be fighting something.
If you give them a flat dish of warm water they should bath themselves - just make sure they have a warm place to hang out after while they dry off
I was thinking of possibly filling the bathtub with a bit of water, would that be fine?
I think so, just put an inch or so.
btw their poops may be runny for up to a day if they were starving before you found them and are just eating now. It's hard to tell what their story is if there arent normally pigeons in your area
My husband is doing that now. He also noticed their wings are clipped so have to belong to someone right? How the heck do we find their owners? 😅
They are likely close to home in that case, so put up "found pigeons" posters in your area and try local online classfieds
you can also try www.facebook.com/groups/palomacy
if you are in a smaller area, another option would be calling your local vet/avian vet and saying you found two pet pigeons. If they have any patients who have pigeons to please call them and pass along your # if that owner has missing pigeons
We live in a fairly rural area with only 1 local vet. I can try to call in the morning to ask! Also to update the clipped wings, I was mistaken and only 1 of them have their wings clipped which we found a bit odd. My husband has a theory that they might be bait birds for dog training.
poor babies if that is the case :( Their eyes/posture looks very stressed in the photos so whatever their story is I think they were a bit traumatized by something. Hard to say what. Were you able to get the muck off of them?
please keep updated. Keep an eye on their poops it should start firming up soon
great I can see it now!
I recommend reaching out on the Palomacy Help Group on Facebook! They give great advice and can hook you up with a vet or foster in your area, as well as give pigeon keeping tips if you’ve decided you have two new feather friends :)
So sad.
hey i'd make sure to post on facebook or whatsapp groups of your area if they are someone's well-loved pet. it's unlikely though.
