Mathieu van der Poel rockets up 14% Montrose Street in recon ride
MediaHaha this is actually so funny
He then adds "And get me some of those Giro dogs for Remco too. I've waited long enough for this"
After that he says "some of that motos for pogacar as well. No stone unturned"
How do you solve a problem like... Victor Lafay tho?
Sunlight. Cofidis is vampires.
Might be fresh out of luck in Scotland then
Sunlight. Cofidis is vampires.
Perfect camouflage for a vampire with the sun logo on their jersey! But then, at the WC Cofidis sponsors the Spanish squad.
Tanya Harding spotting vacationing in Scotland
Tonya
Well, he isn't starting, so that should help.
And another moto for Alaphilippe I guess
And Fred Wright for Roglič
Couple of Scottish teens show up at your door at night, you're probably gettin a bottle of bucky over the head.
Would have been perfect if you'd have said "SEND IN THE NEDS"
Hahahahahaha
I can go that fast but choose not to.
I can go that fast on 14% and do regularly... Just happen to be going the other direction.
"Just stayin' in Zone 2 today boys..."
I could as well. But whom do I have to prove something? Nah, I showed myself somewhere else.
I can go even faster in that climb, downhill.
Found my fellow bcj brother dentist
I used to walk up there several times a day when I was at University, and because it is a sharp left hander going into it, it is one of the best spectator spots on the course. I stood there for the Commonwealth games road race.
Worlds is coming at it from the other direction, so it will be a hard right instead of a hard left. And a tiny little uphill just before the turn as well.
I hid in the NCP car park for the Commies as it was pissing it down. But was at the top for the Nationals, and that was a great day
I was also in that carpark the day of the commies... See you again Sunday?
It really was pissing it down.
The Scottish commentator on GCN was ripping the course and ill conceived and dangerous - particularly if it rains (I mean it is Glasgow) Any takes as a local?
I haven't been a local for several years. It definitely seems more technical than previous routes.
Yeah all of these 90° corners are pretty scary. Looking at the maps online, the one I was really concerned about was the sharp corner into Kelvingrove Park at the bottom of Gibson St (narrow park gates after a big downhill) but all the crashes so far have been in other places.
The freaking out over this video is funny. The kid in 3rd wheel is 17yo.
The kid in 3rd wheel is 17yo.
Poor MVDP can't escape the children
ba dum tssss
We ride the same bike frame so by extension I'm participating at world's, AMA
The kid in 3rd wheel is 17yo.
That doesn't mean that it wasn't fast. Will it be even faster on Sunday? Maybe, probably, but let's not forget that they'll have hours in their legs already at that point. Manuel Lira and Adria Pericas both uploaded their ride to Strava and they did all of Montrose in 20 and 21 seconds respectively with the current KOM on Strava being 19. Mathieu was in all likelihood faster. Lira also rode with a power meter and pushed 1,024 watts on average for those 20 seconds, peaking at 1,478 watts.
That's just insane to me. I don't have a power meter on my bike, but on our Peloton I can get to 1,000 watts for half a second then have to take the rest of the night off.
Yeah, same. I've hit 1200w on my cx bike for 1s lol.
Pros will exceed 2000w in final sprints. And of course this is after a century lmao wtf.
Pretty rare for road pros to hit 2000w I think
yeah those are more track sprinter numbers I think. I reckon a bigger bunch sprinter might hit ~1800 or so, with most probably being more in the ~1500w category
I guess like always it's a matter of w/kg.
Jonathan Milan will hit much bigger numbers than Caleb Ewan
Sprints are not watts pr kg. It is watts relative to cda.
No yeah maybe I didn't use the right wording, I din't mean in relation to speed. Just that a bigger rider's max output in watts is bound to be bigger than a smaller guy. Is that not true?
I’m sure kittel in his hay day would top 2000w. Big sail of a body so would be top power output in the sprints
He's almost 80kg so that's like 12.7 W/kg for 20s which isn't that special.
Top pros do >10 W/kg in the final minute of Mur de Huy alone
There are some fast 17yos out there. But you’re right, doing this fresh isn’t that wild.
Here's the 17 yos race stats, he's there to compete too:

It just looks cool, its not that deep

in what world is that girl fat?
A famine-ridden one!
No, but seriously, both the girl and the guy following MvdP, Lira, and Pericas (is that a Bulgarian national team jersey?) are definitely going faster than 95 percent of users in this subreddit would be able to.
This is very fast but tbh there’s a huge difference in seeing a race on tv or in person. These dudes go fast af even at the cyclotourism pace that pelotons sometimes have on flat stages.
The velocity just doesn’t translate well on tv, but it’s impressive on fan recorded videos or in person.
I went to my first elite bike race in Wollongong and I was genuinely not prepared for how fast they were going up Mt Keira.
It’s true you really don’t get an idea of the speed at all on tv. I watched WVA go first through a hilly intermediate sprint in the 2022 tour and he’s was absolutely rapid
The only pro race I've been to was worlds in Richmond. The speeds are impressive but what really left an impression was the amount of air they move. You don't just see the speed, you feel it.
That’s why there’s such a focus on aerodynamics!
Plus there is no better sound than that many carbon wheels doing 45+kmh. The whoooosh sound is unreal
I remember watching one stage and they were talking about how slow the peloton was going. Then I finally did the km/h to mph conversion and realized that was the pace I go when I push myself on a 20-30 mile ride. Obviously the effort is different riding solo vs in a peloton, but it's really fast for what the commentators were calling a cafe ride
I watched the gp montreal and the pace they come up the final uphill straight is insane to watch. Even more impressive for me because I rode my bike up to the top so I could get a good view
The nearest 14% to me is a loading ramp in Skokie leading directly into a toxicology lab.
Sometimes I dream of a meteor hitting Illinois just so we get some fucking topology. If only because the alternative is moving to Denver. I'd take fiery obliteration over that.
Please don't squander your hills, Euro friends. Some of us live in 2 dimensions.
Meanwhile as someone in the Netherlands...
That comment is pretty funny as a Dane too. Yeah, we'll try not to squander our five 170m hills (558 ft for the freedom folks).
Get yourself to Berg en Dal 😃
You have great cycling infrastructure and culture though.
Here on the west coast we get coal rolled by brodozers, people calling us all sorts of names and plenty of close passes by trucks doing 50 (80 Kmh). I live in a pretty cycling friendly area compared to most of the US so it's way worse in other places.
I'm happy to get at least a small shoulder on the road let alone a bike lane, and a protected bike lane is some kind of unicorn.
I used to ride up this hill to get home from the MUT near me. There is a 6 inch drop off next to the fog line on the right so you will probably crash if you go over it. It's also 8%-10% grade there so you need to go really hard to even do 12 mph (20 Kmh). The cars are all doing 70-80 Kmh, had one too many close passes and now I just drive down to the MUT to ride.
I'm not really into road cycling (as sport), more cycling to get somewhere. As a Dutch person traveling, it never ceases to amaze me how poor cycling infrastructure is in most countries.
The coal rolling thing is just crazy amounts of stupid. Good luck out there.
My street is 24 percent… careful what you wish for, groceries are hell
Day trip up to Wisconsin to Kettle Moraine or Blue Mounds if you haven't already. Lots of good hills. Riding to the top of Blue Mound from the north side is a Cat 3 climb according to Strava. County Highway F is a great climb and just as fun to go down hill.
There’s a hill a little ways from my house that’s 18% for a block that the tour used for a itt in 2019, I can sprint up it but it’s brutal on a bike
Seattle and surrounding areas have tons of super steep but short hills. Go towards the mountains and you have 1-2 hour long climbs like this one.
I live ~40 miles south of Seattle and if I want to get out of my neighborhood it means the easiest way back home is 10%. There is one way that is over 20%. I do like it but there are days when it's annoying having nothing flat near by for an easy ride.
Pittsburgh also has a bunch of short steep ass hills. You know it’s gonna be fun when the sidewalk is just a set of stairs!
That looks painful, I've never done Toe Jam Hill on Bainbridge island but the road is often covered in moss so traction is an issue.
I was on vacation in June and Santa Fe New Mexico sits at an elevation of 7,100'. The ski area climb tops out a little over 10,000'. I rode up to 8,400' but didn't take enough food or water so I turned around. The elevation kicks your ass, I've been to Denver so thought it would be like that but nope, that extra few thousand feet makes a difference. Great place to ride though, lots of 2-3 mile climbs at 5% plus the ski area when you want a challenge.
I don’t get it - I’ve been to Denver a few times, it’s awesome! I drool over having the mountains at my doorstep :)
SF bay area is fuckin amazing, come thru!
Please don't squander your hills, Euro friends.
Not much better over here, the places with mountains and those with jobs are almost disjoint sets. At least the US has that gorgeous west coast.
Who are the 2 guys behind him?
Guy behind him is Manuel Lira from Chile. Third guy looks like someone from Spain?
Apparently it is Adria Pericas, a junior rider from spain
That guy they blow by like he's standing still is probably still faster than I could ever hope to be on 14%
I do not go that fast when I dream about climbs like that.
I once had to ride an electric bike over the Cauberg and had to turn on the power to get over it (before that I was riding with my own energy). Those bikes are heavy, but that hill is steep yet pro cyclists make it look so easy when they sprint over it.
To be fair it’s “only” 200m long, like in a race situation where you’re doing it multiple times alongside a load of other short sharp climbs it’s a killer. but if you drill it up something like this you can be at the top before the lactate properly kicks in. If you go in slow at the bottom you are fucked though, it’s all about momentum.
It looks like the length that I think I can sprint over it, then half way up I'm quickly downshifting to my granny gear
Yup. And it doesn't help that you often get the red light at that corner before turning into it.
He's catching the kids of the australian hotel
It's the ripping sound as the power goes down that gets me
If he had his white bibs on, he would have even gone faster
VDP's big strength is that he can still be very explosive after a long, hard race with many short hills. The fact those youngsters could stay in his wheel is normal during a short training effort. Good luck holding his wheel after 260km and in the final lap though!
The fact those youngsters could stay in his wheel is normal during a short training effort.
I mean. Let's define normal. Normal for a world-class amateur? Maybe. Normal for even the best rec riders? Absolutely not.
Normal for even the best rec riders?
They're at the world championships for a reason.
In isolation, that looks ridiculous
Not really
How much fitter are pros than ordina-, ah.
Thermonuclear
To win this though, he will need that THERMOBIBLICALITY.
Nino is watching this going - yes yes, empty the tank before XCO....
Getting super pumped for Sunday!
“Getting pumped” means something different in Glasgow…
he knows what he said
He’s going for a long ride right? Right?
They could still follow tho
Let's see after a few laps and 200km in the legs
Sure, was checking his attack in strade bianche from a few years ago. That was impressive and after 180km
1:05:10 mark
That group was insane: Van Aert, Pogacar, Van der Poel, Bernal, Alaphilippe, Gogl and Pidcock.
Gogl 💀
No but for real that was one of the most stacked races ever it was insane
That will forever be the defining moment of Gogl's career. What a legend to be in that company
Let's hope that Bernal will fully recover to his old self
I’m I’m
Yeah he seemed to be only at 80% effort vs all out.
He’s not going to be that spry on lap 10 imo
I accidentally did 700 watts on a 20% climb. I couldn’t ride properly for weeks afterwards.
Why is this going so viral? Hes doing an effort up a hill and people are acting like he’s won a stage of the TDF
It's a street in the centre of Glasgow many people will be familiar with, so gives them context of the ridiculous power of these athletes in a way Ventoux might not as they've never been there. That's my guess anyway
that's so dummy fast hahahah
I also can do that, on the flat.
It looks like MvdP wanted to show everyone where he'll be attacking on Sunday to win his first world title. Watch out, though, as he's likely to take the next few corners in full cyclo-cross attack mode.
Just placed money on him
Congrats on your win
thank you.
I cannot wait to be on this hill Sunday
<Yummy.gif>
Yeah now way this race can be controlled. This is goin to be an early attacker delight.
Would have been better if he was wearing all orange
Anytime you think you’re fast, just remember this video.
I don't think I'm fast, I'm just wondering if I could freewheel down there quicker than he can ride up it.
My toxic trait is thinking I can do that too.
Wout van Aert pulls into a dark side street and dials a number on his phone. "Send in the children, tomorrow night"
