I tried this app for the first time today. It works with local stores to sell food that is on or about to expire for a significant discount. I got this from the Metro on Tenth Line in Orleans. Here's the breakdown:

Bakery: $6.77 (with tax) for about $21 worth of goodies (factoring in the 30% off stickers)

Assorted fruit and salad: $7.90 (with tax) for about $18 of salads.

You never know what you'll get until you pick it up but I think this is pretty good.

No clue. I'm allergic to walnuts. I would love to try the baked goods, but want to make sure they don't include items with walnuts. But somehow I committed an Ottawa faux-pas by making the comment.

Seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to consider. If it helps though i believe in Canada packaged foods have to identify ingredients and whether they may have come into contact with common allergens such as nuts.

Profiting? Do you think Metro made much profit selling highly discounted food that was soon-to-expire?

Yeah, it was better than throwing it out and getting nothing, but not much profit there. Any additional time and effort required to sell it increases they likelihood it is cheaper to just throw it out.

They'd have to list for each and every item they have that particular day, and repeat again tomorrow as the leftovers are different. And they sold it anyway, without time and effort nor liability for errors.

This is a great mix of items! My Metro in Kanata gave me something like 32 croissants and a loaf of soda bread. 🤣

Pretty good actually. We are the larger one tonight. There was some browning on some of the lettuce but it's not too much. The smaller ones look absolutely fine.

If you like Mavericks, they're on there but the one near me tends to sell out quick.

They sell half a dozen for 6.99 I believe. They'll freeze the donuts that didn't sell that day. Sometimes if theres not enough to make another half dozen they'll put the stragglers in a box. I've gotten a box of 8 donuts before which is pretty good!

They freeze well so I'll usually buy a dozen and freeze them.

Glebe Meat Market posts stuff on there too, some great deals. And if you happen to be there sometime, it’s really fantastic for Toronto restaurant food - some very posh restos use it.

Just tried the app for the first time. Our local Tim Horton's had a deal for $4.99, value listed as $15. We got 6 bagels and a roll. Hardly a $15 value!!! Very disappointed.

There's an app for ottawa area called "Too good to Go" as you noticed and yes they can have some really good deals 5.99 for assorted baked good but as you don't know we hit two allergies when we purchased and had to throw some out.
