Oslo is a very safe city.
Anker is really close to both Grünerløkka and Torggata which is two of the hottest parts of Oslo if you enjoy bars and night life.
I go through there everyday almost, drug addicts are not dangerous. There is mostly "normal" people there. They will not bother you, people on this subreddit overdramatize how dangerous it is in this area. You are gonna live super central.
Yes, it is close to the shadiest area in town, but the city ain't all that big, so it is also close to nice areas like Torggata and Grünerløkka. I've walked passed that shady area hundreds of times. The worst thing that happens is that you are offered drugs. Heroin addicts and the like are typically not interested in violent encounters with strangers.
Some of SiO's accommodation borders with Oslo's public housing, where some of the tenants in my opinion are much more shady than the old heroin addict just stumbling along in Storgata. I wouldn't worry, Oslo is very safe!
Anker requires almost nothing to live there. No references, no (overly) big deposits, no credit checks. It’s also in the middle of the local hard drug scene in Oslo so there will occasionally be people following the residents into the buildings in order to take shelter from the cold and shoot up. You usually won’t see this happen, but there are often syringes littered around the staircases in the student housing buildings.
So you will see some shady people there, probably some syringes in the staircase, and definitely smell hash on the roof terrace.
Overall it’s not dangerous but it doesn’t feel like a classy place to live. You’ll be left alone and it’s relatively cheap considering that you are living alone with your own bathroom and kitchenette.
SiO doesn't require anything eighter. Not even deposits these days.
Nothing wrong with a lil hash on the roof terrace tho
Anker is fine if you enjoy urban lifestyle. However isn't SiO way cheaper? I thought SiO was mandated to offer exchange studends rooms. I'd give them a call if you are waiting for an offer.
I walk through that area every day, the only time I’ve been approached by anybody was them asking if I liked the new jacket they just found.
It definitely has a shady vibe. I know people who lived there while studying and it was safe for them, but it was very shady.
Anker Studentbolig K10 is in a better area. I would apply there unless you hear from SIO.
Hi, I’ll be moving in Storgata 57 as well, and Idc much about it, the only thing I know is that the area is more likely safer than ppl say. Oslo is a relatively safe city so I’m not really worried about the area. However I did hear that it may be difficult to go to certain unis but I’m still not sure
Lived across the street from Anker studenthus for a few years. Storgata itself is really shady, but the student apartment building is not in the shady part. The area is pretty safe as there are usually a lot of (normal) people walking about in that area. Storgata is the street where the drug addicts hang out, but if you don't egg them on they won't even notice you.
The shadiest part of oslo is Storgata 33, which you aren't really close to. If you pass through it, it will probably be on tram. Or you can walk through Torggata instead, which is one of the busier shopping streets in Oslo.
Like I said, i lived across the street for a few years and never had any issues, so don't worry :)
Don’t worry about it that much, the usual precautions if you get home late will be enough, there are prettier places but it’s perfectly fine.
It’s in a nice and convenient area for students, well connected, tram and bus stops very close by, walking distance to the center, lots of places to shop, etc.
Some drug addicts hang out near the river, and sometimes they are outside the building but I personally never had any issues with them, they don’t bother anyone. My gf used to live there and she used to get home quite late after work but she never had any problems.
Be cautious but don’t freak out about it, have fun and enjoy Oslo!
