clear plastic retainer lifespan?

I had three sets of clear plastic retainers after my brace and each of them lasts for about only 9 months before cracking.

I got mixed information in this sub about how long they can last, from 3 months to 20 years. Why is the range so wide? Is that just because of quality, or there are actually different types of clear plastic retainers with different design lifespan?

I jist started clear ratainer. My orthodontist said to clean the retainer regularly with a clean brush (no toothpaste residue) and mouthwash then rinse. Toothpaste is too harsh and will scratch up the ratainer. No proper cleaning or care of your ratainer will cause bacteria, or lower life span of the ratainer. Also depends on how you store it when not in use as well as if you clinch / grind your teeth.

I'm a severe teeth grinder, so I didn't ask about the life span of the final ratainer. I am on day two and TBD on how my first retainer will last. 😂
