I have lots of time on my hands and want to discover new music, so I thought I'd ask y'all about albums that have gone unloved or undervalued.
Send me anything! All genres are welcome!
Edit: YOU'RE ALL FUCKIN' RAD.

Ive never done a deep dive into Sufjans discography, but I love what I've heard. Absolutely will listen to this, and thank you for the recommendation!
That album was kind of a religious experience for me.
Actually reminded me of Paul Simon's new album, "Seven Psalms". Not exactly the same theme, but it's a deep dive into human psychology/sociology and our understanding of the world.
I SECOND THIS !!
Mezzanine by massive attack
The trip hop GOAT
Perfect in every way. Dark, menacing, haunting, beautiful
This is actually very popular.
I know. I read too fast and missed the under appreciated part. Thanks for letting me know.
I can listen to the entire album without skipping a song. Such a solid album.
A FUCKING MASTERPIECE
I lived next to the woman it was written about. My god. My first thought was, this person votes and drives? Good lord what an odd person. Picture a brunette Stacy from Wayne’s World. I was such a big fan of Beck at the time and it made me question my entire reality. The ironic part was, she ended up with a perfect Beck clone immediately following the breakup. She used to be Becks stylist so I guess it makes sense she would dress him similar but it was uncanny. Those were weird times.
I knew the album was about a previous lady friend, but I didn't know it was his former stylist. That's wild!
Yeah lol first time I met her she twirled over to me and spoke about how many stars in the sky there were. It was Pasadena CA. There are no more than 5 stars at any given time. I suspected she may have been high but every interaction with her was much of the same absurdity for a year and a half…a year and a half. I moved away.
Violent femmes- violent femmes
Im ashamed in saying I've never given this a spin. I must do it now haha
When I was a teenager I wanted the Violent Femmes album. My father ordered it for me online. You should have seen the sideways glance he made when he asked for the album title.
Great album and also best, and perhaps only, use of a xylophone in a rock tune,
This album completely rearranged my musical taste.
Bright Eyes- LIFTED or the story is in the soil, keep your ear to the ground!!!!
Never listened to one bright eyes album and that must change
Desaparecidos- read music/speak Spanish, is also extremely under-appreciated. Front man’s, punk band.
Hit me up with your thoughts after you’ve listened.
Is this the one with “Bowl Of Oranges”? Love that song.
Yeah!!!
I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning is my favorite album of all time. BRB gotta remind everyone I know this album exists and to listen to it.
Great response, amazing album although I'm Wide Awake It's Morning is my favorite album by anyone ever, and all the songs work on their own as well, even though it's even better as a whole. To me LIFTED has songs that work primarily inside of the album
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute https://youtu.be/hVLAk1D23GA
extremely complex but satisfying
This band keeps popping up everywhere and I haven't listend yet! Will check this release out for sure!
many songs feel like complete madness, like every person in the band is playing their own song and somewhere along the line they all sync up and it's completely mind-blowing
Yes this album is amazing
Room on Fire by The Strokes. Everyone looks over this album because of their debut, but it’s still a great one
This is a great album.
I have a buddy who swears this is the best Strokes album. I'll give it another try 😊
room on fire was a fantastic follow up to their debut, they stayed on the same track and didn’t make any changes to their sound so critics along with the audience accepted the album as an instant classic. it is the most popular strokes album along side is this it. i’d say first impressions of earth and angles are their most under appreciated albums because artists change while fans expect the same so they weren’t well received. evening sun off of first impressions of earth is one of my favorite strokes songs ever. life is simple in the moonlight off of angles IS my favorite strokes song EVER
Above by Mad Season
Oh God fantastic album. I'm gonna listen to it again just because you mentioned it haha
What about Blast Tyrant by clutch?
Never even heard of this haha
University Boulevard. New Hampshire Avenue. Tick Tock Liquor. Thunderbird!
Hell yeah. Such a great album.
Ambulance LTD — LP (their only album). Standout song: “Anecdote”
Goldfrapp — Seventh Tree. Standout song: “A&E”
Goldfrapp. Highly underrated for sure.
Ambulance LTD was super impressive and their EP was amazing too. Really unique
Love that EP. Arbuckle’s Swan Song sounds like vintage Steely Dan to me
Blue October- The Answer
Gosh what a good album. I REALLY miss early Blue October
Any Man in America is WOW. Rage to art in its finest form.
Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs
Never heard of them! Will investigate haha
Blues rock power trio. Like Cream but grungier.
A grungier Cream? Fuck yeah!
Yup. James Dewar is such an underrated vocalist. I love that album. And Robin Trower is an amazing guitar player. His skills were wasted in Procol Harum, which was an amazing band, but he wasn't meant to play in an organ-heavy baroque rock band. He broke free and really started to kick ass. And Reg Isidor is no slouch on drums.
James Dewar + Robin Trower = 🔥
I have some grungy cream in the back of my fridge....
I'm kinda scared to touch it.... 😬
Incredible album
Soup by Blind Melon
I recently revisited this album! It was a weird one for sure, but I think it's a solid record. That band has a soft spot in my heart
Phenomenal and underrated album. Going in the rotation tonight!
St Andrew’s Fall is freaking good
Skinned!
Van Halen - 5150
People give the VH Hagar era a real hard time, but there's so much great music.
I agree. For as good as it is, I pick this even if it's not quite as unappreciated as another VH album.
I think Hagar was better than DLR by far. DLR was a good showman, but that was about it
A Northern Soul - The Verve
My Life In the Bush of Ghosts- Brian Eno/David Byrne
The Catherine Wheel-David Byrne
I've been putting off listening to Brian Eno and David Byrne forever. Thanks for recommending this!
Excellent album! My favorite is currently Jezebel Spirit
Magnificent choices
Days of Future Passed - The Moody Blues (honestly, any of their albums)
It is the musical version of a day. Most folks will know "Nights in White Satin," as it is often played as a stand-alone song out of context of the concept album. That is just the Night portion. My personal favorite is Evening: the Sun Set/Twilight Time.
BRO. The moody blues are literally THE most underappreciated band. Great album!
Growing up in the 80s and early 90s, my grandmother had an 8-track player in the rumpus room. There were only three tapes: Days of Future Passed, To Our Children's Children's Children, and Seventh Sojourn.
Your Gram was cool.
Lovely to see you again, my friend.
Here's some music unlike anything you have ever heard:
Sigur Ros, ( ).
(The album is untitled, but it is signified by the parentheses, or incomplete circle above. All 8 songs are also untitled. I think this album is an epic masterpiece of art rock.)
my favorite of theirs for sure. funny how I can sing along verbatim even tho it’s a made up language
This album unlocked a part of my brain when I first heard it. Incredible
The Mountain - Heartless Bastards.
No bad songs. Totally underappreciated
Really dig this band. I should listen to a full length
Pinkerton - weezer
I've had this saved for months! I need to listen immediately
Its actually really good, some of the songs DO have creepy lyrics, specifically “across the sea”, so i should warn you about that. But, please know the songs were written when rivers was in a TERRIBLE mental state, and even then i dont think theyre meant literally. The song is based off the play “madame butterfly”.
Alright ill stop yapping, go listen to some weezer!!!
Great album. I always considered it to be their “messy” album. Not as refined and polished as their usual stuff but still so good.
Well that was the point, rivers wanted to take the band in a more serious direction, reflecting his OWN mental state at the time. The album however, was a complete flop, which led them to make “sellout” pop music.
Goats Head Soup - Rolling Stones
Comets on fire- Avatar
I FUCKING LOVE AVATAR!
Fucking yes, but I'd say Hail The Apocalypse
Wishbone Ash. Highly influential on an entire generation of guitarists but just never really caught on in the US.
A Perfect Circle (13th Step).
Tool's lead singer with a different band. It's fantastic.
Discovery by ELO
You’ll definitely love the song “Last Train to London” but I bet you know the final track from the album.
Underappreciated band in general. I should absolutely give a listen.
Check out ELO - Eldorado
The Streets - A Grand Don’t Come For Free to me is such a fun concept of an album. A great story told throughout an album with such a mosaic of different sounds. I feel like this album isn’t underrated to UK garage fans or even underground hip hop fans but Mike Skinner deserves so much more mainstream credit.
Such a fun album. Saw them in concert when I was in the UK, absolutely fantastic evening.
I've only ever listened to Original Pirate Material, and LOVED it, and then never checked out anything else. 😂🤦🏼♂️
Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning
My favorite vocalist ever. Obviously gotta listen
His best solo album by far, it’s up there with the best Soundgarden stuff for me.
Seriously RIP
Always down to listen to emerging artists!
Blue Oyster Cult...Cultosaurus Erectus
Monsters is the best prog-rock/jazz/metal fusion song in the universe.
Never listened to a full album by them. Guess they're good?
That really the only record I've listened to by them, but I really like it! No mainstream hits on it, just good music.
Beck, The Information
The Original Austin Powers Soundtrack (Baby)
BRO. I've been trying to binge Becks discography forever. I gotta do it
Twin Peaks - Down in Heaven
Prepare for a rockgasm.
Pisces iscariot by smashing pumpkins… love it
Never heard that album! I'm in a grunge phase so it's perfect haha
It was my introduction into grunge. I found the cassette at this little shop in a gatlinburg mall in the 90’s . I hope it’s still there . I love that little shop. I bought the tape bc I am a Pisces. I fell in love.
obscured is one of my favorite songs ever, its inspired so much in my life. also glynis is another outstanding track
Shelter, by Lone Justice
“New Gold Dream” by Simple Minds
I have this, need to re-listen.
Underworld - Beaucoup Fish
Love this one.
Styx - Paradise Theatre
and
Portugal. The Man - The Satanic Satanist
Love Portugal the man. Not really into their newer stuff but they're still very solid
This album was everywhere 30 years ago, but it doesn’t get discussed much nowadays
Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience
The pinnacle of jangle pop, and just a flat out masterpiece all around
Debut- Björk
Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane.
Sturgill Simpson - A Sailor’s Guide To Earth
I love this man so much
JJ Cale “Travel Log”
Burning Blue Soul - The The (Matt Johnson)
Evening at the Grange - Lida Husik (not on YouTube but you can listen on SoundCloud here https://m.soundcloud.com/lidahusik-music/promenade?in=lidahusik-music%2Fsets%2Fevening-at-the-grange)
The Legendary Bobby Darin - Bobby Darin
(today would have been his 88th birthday)
Pink floyd, the final cut
Sonic youth - experimental jet set, trash and no star
Beck- Colors
Joni Mitchell Hejira
BRO. That's my favorite Joni album. I'm also a songwriter and I stole many ideas from that album haha
Sparklehorse any album.
PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PURPLE BY STONE TEMPLE PILOTS
Bro. Love this band. Some of the best songwriting in the grunge era came from this band.
Much respect haha
Purple is not underrated tho, as amazing as it is. Check out Shangri-La-Dee-Da, that is underrated.
Jonathan Brenner - Instagram Success https://jonathanbrenner.hearnow.com/instagram-success
Do you love me? - datfootdive
Ty Tabor - Safety
Sal's Birdland, "Nude Photos Inside"
Love that name! Will check out
it's an EP but Maggie Valley by Weston Estate
Richard Wright - Wet Dreams
What an album title
Conditions- Full of War. The band never really took off but FOW was so solid start to finish
Ok will have to see for myself haha
Bel Canto - Dorothy's Victory
Cloudkicker - Beacons. [Post-rock/Post-Metal/Prog]
An instrumental concept album about the final messages on the retrieved Black Boxes from the crashed planes. Ben Sharp ( One man band) is a genius and an airplane pilot.
Eddie Money self-titled (1977)
Life of Chris Gaines
This album got so much bad flack but I really did like it.
Foghat “Live”
Manchester Orchestra - I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child
Heart - Dog & Butterfly
The Frames - Fitzcarraldo
You might have listened to the first two (or the last one if you're Irish). I'm really bad at judging whether things are underappreciated or not. They're not really underappreciated more just unknown.
“Fetti” - Alchemist, Curren$y and Freddie Gibbs. A quick and easy listen. Also zero skips. If you’re into quality rap music of course. I’ve listened to it over 100 times lol it’s vinyl worthy if you needed more encouraging.
Baby Animals by Baby Animals. Released early 1990s and was pretty popular at the time, but has largely disappeared nowadays
home video - lucy dacus
I love her songwriting but never heard the record. Guess it's time to listen!
Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven by kid cudi
This album is definitely not conventionally good, but has some of the most emotion I’ve ever heard in music.
I have so many feelings about this album.
It truly could have been GREAT but some of the choices he made...
Anyway, not as bad as people say it is but also just not a very well crafted album
I’d say there’s about 15 songs worth listening to on the album. Cudi is my favorite artist though. Have to agree that mistakes were made on the album. Track 2 is just weird and ruins the overall feel of the album kinda(trauma and MELTING are good tracks though and are worth the loss on structure imo). There is no defending songs like The Nothing and The Return of Chip Douglas though.
Won't lie, this album came out right when I needed it. So while I don't love it, it will always have a spot in my music heart haha
hahah i have fuschia butterflies stuck in my head and see this comment
Hiss Golden Messenger-“Hallelujah Anyhow”
Oh awesome recommendation
Something Corporate 's Leaving Through the Window.
Munki - Jesus and Mary Chain
It was largely overlooked when it came out, but I consider one of their best
Brighter than a thousand Suns - Killing Joke
Extricate - The Fall
Meliora -Ghost
one of their most popular songs are in that album but the album itself feels so underrated
FUCK YEAH GREAT ALBUM!
their other albums are fucking amazing too but this one…this is a whole other level of amazing lmao
I love them all equally tbh. Just a fantastic band
Amenra - Mass V1
I see we have similar taste...
Beneath the skin by Of Monsters And Men
BRO. YES. I wish they were still making music like this
Oh I have perfect one!
The 1975 - Notes on a Conditional Form
The Final Cut - Pink Floyd.
Ok gonna listen immediately
The golden age - Woodkid
Especially conquest of spaces but so many of these songs are amazing
Kansas - Leftoverture. Carry On My Wayward Son got all the love, but The Wall is even better! Other great pieces on there as well.
"You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having" by Atmosphere
I’m sorry, but I lost all respect for Stevens when he agreed with the fatwa proclaiming that Salman Rushdie should be executed for writing a book of fiction. He was quiet when Rushdie was stabbed many times in New York at a public appearance. I repeat: the Ayatollah called for a writer to be executed for writing a book. Of fiction. And Stevens agreed. Spiritual? My ass…
Dog fashion disco - experiments in alchemy. I promise you haven’t heard anything quite like it.
Load - metallica - Lotta rock here
Romantic Works by Keaton Henson. I still can’t listen to this album without crying. It’s stunning!
Anything by the Go-Betweens. And Morphine–Cure for Pain.
“Lincoln” - by Lincoln - a truly great album from the mid 90s that no one I know has heard. I found it during a random browsing at a bookstore listening bar (remember those??) and it’s been a favorite all this time. The lead track “Sucker” is a banger. Ry Cooder plays on it as a guest .
Cry of Love - Brother. Small band that never blew up but was an incredible rock album.
Daniel Lanois - for the beauty of Wynona
Porcupine Tree - deadwing
The Tea Party - the Edges of Twilight
21st century ambassadors of peace and magic - Foxygen
Amanda Palmer - Theatre Is Evil
The Glowing Man by Swans. it’s appreciated but i feel like it’s their best post reunion album and a decent bit better than To Be Kind, which is their most popular
I fucking love Swans. They can do no wrong.
"You'd Prefer An Astronaut" by Hum
A legit very correct answer
Seven Swans by Sufjan Stevens
The nearly 20-year-old album is largely soft, acoustic folk music about Sufjan‘s own personal experience with religion. But it’s definitely not a Christian music album of “praise jeebus”. To hear an artist talk personally about their own experiences, especially when life is hard and doesn’t align with what the Bible told you, is something a lot of us can relate to.
Sufjan‘s music has taken a sharp corner into anxiety electronica since then, but these are undeniably, gorgeous songs, and most of his fans nowadays don’t really listen to it.
