opinion on women's gear

what's ur opinion on women's gear?

every time i try searching for some pant recommendations that would keep me safe from road rashes with hard pads keeping my knees and other areas safe(assuming i do crash, i want to walk away with minimal scratches on my legs), i keep finding the "stylish" gear like riding leggings, riding jeans, etc. i feel like these stylish gears don't really protect you as much as "ugly" normal gear (gear that weren't made to look like regular stylish pants, gear that looks like gear) but i'm new so i wouldn't really know much, but from looks they look really slim and tight on the legs which looks like it doesn't have much protective measures.

my opinion on stylish gear is that tbh i don't really like them, because i just feel like regular gear looks cooler and is probably more protective/safer than gear that was made to look like you're not wearing gear.

ps: when i say gear in this post im referring to pants

do you guys have any AFFORDABLE recommendations to some female pants? i'm in need of some because i keep finding these leggings and jeans :(

also, what's ur opinion on the bell qualifier? i want to get this helmet because its 130$ without tax, its affordable and it looks cool and sleek in glossy black but unfortunately the color is out of xs :((

As long as it has the A ratings (I prefer AA over AAA since it's still proper protective but also doesn't hinder movement too much), it'll be protective. There are definitely stylish leggings or jeans with protection, but they are more than likely not cheap. You could also go for some base layer with protection and wear normal clothes over them. The benefit being 1. Still safe and 2. Go with any clothes.

For the helmet, go with something that fits. Style is secondary over fit, your brain is quite important.

I've been rocking the Sedici Alexi 2 mesh women's pants. They have decent armor, and you can add extra hip pads. They come with removable thermal and waterproof layers, plus I have gotten a lot of compliments!

For helmets, always fit them first because every brand has a bit different dimensions so some brands might just not be correct for your head shape.

Traditional textile pants are ofcourse good, but these days the jeans-like pants are abbrasion resistant and have protection. So check the ratings and aa in jeans is equally as good as aa in textile. It’s only when it rains that those jeans are not great ofcourse :)

It’s difficult to know what affordable means to you. I have a friend who bought Saint riding jeans and is very happy with it.

For peace of mind you probably want to check that the gear you purchase has a EN 17092 rating of Class AAA, AA, or A rating, meaning it provides protection for both impact and abrasion.

Revit usually has decent quality gear, and not extravagant pricing. Rarely will you find good gear for cheap (maybe last season on clearance). Comfort is a major factor when I purchase protective gear, if it's uncomfortable I'm less likely to put it on no matter how good the deal it was.

Just because a pair of pants appear stylish, does not mean they're not going to provide good protection. If they're a bit tighter, and the padding is positioned correctly they'll probably hold the protection in place better than a looser style. Fit (including placement of padding) and certification are the most important. You'll also want to consider waterproof/breathability ratings to suit the type of riding you expect to do.

As far as the helmet, make sure you try it on, and get one that truly fits. Also, keep in mind that DOT rated is virtually worthless. SNELL rated is definitely better, as is ECE. As for the pants- read through descriptions, and look for abrasion resistance ratings or times. Also, make sure that if it doesn’t come with armor, it at least has pockets for armor. There is this trend lately for not wearing motorcycle specific pants, even amongst safety minded YouTube channels such as MCRider and Fortnine, due to statistics showing legs are the lowest percentage of injuries- I don’t buy it. I know what it’s like to hit pavement with a raw knee cap, and while I didn’t break anything, scrubbing asphalt particulate out of that wound wasn’t exactly pain free. It’s not worth it. I’d even recommend an airbag vest, if you can afford one. I love our hobby, but it isn’t the safest thing one can do.

What are the leggings and jeans made out of? Dyneema has made it possible to make single layered garments rather than double layer (like aramid and denim) with similar abrasion resistance.

Hard armor is not necessarily better than flexible armor.

What part of the world are you in? That can affect availability.

also i'm not sure what they're made out of, i just see a lot of these recommendations when im looking through tiktok, youtube, or even on google. most of them look sooo snug to the body that makes me wonder where all the gear are for them to look that normal and not look like they have gear

Tbh look for used, and just make sure it's rated. Facebook marketplace + a wash for everything NOT a helmet.

ohhh buying used gear did not appear in my head. this is a good idea and id definitely do that as someone on a budget and still in school (broke), for the helmet i already tried on the one i was talking abt in the post, it fits super good and i love the color changing visor! i love how its a all black helmet which is great, but i tried to look for reviews on tiktok and youtube but i cant find legit reviews so i was wondering y'all's opinions on it

It's ece 22.05 rated, which is ok and not bad. Fit is probably the most important thing, and it seems to have decent reviews. I'd say pretty good for the price, but also get earplugs (for any helmet you get). If it fits well and is ece rated, and full face that's about as good as you can get on a budget! And you'll have to spend a fortune to get any safer than that. (In my opinion).

thanks for the insight, i will def be getting this helmet if i go on rides often as passenger then! i won't be doing any crazy speeding and stuff (hopefully) so i think it should be fine! this helmet is prob the only helmet i could actually afford and not cry, unless there are other helmets under 230/250 but i was too lazy to try to find them haha

This should be more than fine. I would recommend getting some pants and a jacket for sure, I would never let a passenger on without then. I used make my pillion wear my gear if they had none. Any gear is better than no gear and anecdotally SUPER cheap gear will still protect you in a slide.

i can't find any super cheap gear thooo, i mean i found some alpine star pants that are for motocross or something like that? it's the alpinestars women's stella fluid pants chaser it's 87$ rn from sale and 109$ without sale, so that's super great but it says motocross or off road and i'm not sure if it matters but i don't have much knowledge on gear

no no they're brand new, i found them when i was searching for pants, on amazon i think it's even cheaper!

i also found these even cheaper: alpinestars 2023 racer graphite pants and they're like in the 65$ range without tax on amazon, i'm skeptical on why it's so cheap..

i love how just as i was talking about not finding super cheap gear while i was searching yesterday and now i find some cheap ones 😂

I run Rokker jeans, though they run a bit slim in the thighs for me. My biggest issue is just the lack of colours. Often they throw a pink or white strip and label it women's.
I cross shop the dude's section hoping I can find something to fit that I like but at 5ft 4, everything is too long and baggy.

At least there are respectable choices for smaller helmets.

omg!! i'm 5'4 too, i haven't went into a gear store to try on gear but i have to try on helmets, i think i tried a alpine star jacket once and its womens and it has a good size selection!! its leather too i think and has protection, i def feel safe in it. as for pants i haven't tried yet im still looking for some badass cool looking ones 😭

All the stores near me are mostly devoid of women's gear. My first jacket was a Triumph branded one cause it was all they had that fit. Now I have a Rev it one that fits and has a style I am mostly happy with.
Pants were by far the hardest to find something I really liked. So many I tried just fit in a weird way that cut into my stomach when riding a my bike, which has a very forward leaning position.
Next on my hope list is a fitted leather jacket for the cooler weather days. I am, hopeful that the fall sales with have something interesting left.

do you have a cycle gear? it's unfortunate that your stores don't have much women's gear, i hate how unrepresented women's are in this community sometimes haha but whatever (especially the weird ass size ranges! but i'm super fortunate to have a slimmer body)

in my stores ive definitely seen some winter or just something you could wear to be warm but still be protective and breathable, i didn't really look into it but i think they were mostly major brands like alpinestars and other popular brands people talk about.

from what i remember alpinestars def have some winter ones! looking online would help a lot since you don't have much women's gear in your stores, you should def use tiktok to search too (ik it's probably weird and not credible but you get to see the reviews and try ons and the comments talking about it which is a plus!)

I have resigned myself to relying on online shopping and solid return policies if the items don't fit as expected. At least proper boots and gloves have been easy to fit with online ordering.

I wanted lots of foot and ankle protection so I have Dainese Women's Torque 3 Out Boots (fun colour) for summer and Alpinestars Women's Stella SMX-6 V2 Drystar Boots for cooler or wet weather. Both fit true to size and have some decent adjustability for calves. I keep my eye out for sales on boots that I know fit and you can often save 33% or more.

I own two different motorcycle pants, both womens, both proper gear:

AAA rated racing leathers

AA rated touring fabric

Go to a proper store and you'll find a variety of options (even if it's still less than mens)

i'd suggest you invest in some pando moto base layers. they might cost a bit of money but theyre very stretchy and will grow with you (up to 2/3 sizes) in width. as someone who's trying to get more muscular and gain some weight im very happy with my purchase and not at all worried i will grow out of them. also the fabric/protection will last longer compared to normal protection!

I have one of those leggings and they have kevlar and armor and they look nice from far away but if you touch them you feel that they are not normal leggings. They are very safe.

My helmet is a shoei neotec 3. My jacket is a daemon-x hoodie (grey). That one is really nice. my shoes are stylemartin sneaker atom evo. Also I have back armor from daemon, matching the jacket. I also have two pair of cloves. one for summer and one for cold, rainy days. the names are five cloves rs3 and viper-gtx 2.0.
