Did you hear about the blocklist 2024?

It’s mainly a movement going on across social media to block people who didn’t say anything about the israelo-palestina conflict (which we aren’t going into please) but also to block celebrities and influencers that are showcasing their consumerism while there are people out here struggling to afford groceries with our current inflation.

I personally wouldn’t block her so I can snark and hate watch but adding her would make other people block her that do not snark and are fed up with her consumerism. Do you think it would work to put Milena on the list? What are your overall thoughts on this?

Hot take but I am so tired of demanding influencers speak out and have an opinion on everything. Not everyone is fully educated on every issue *and therefore not qualified to educate their audience. So the argument that they need to “use their platform” is pointless and potentially harmful if they don’t fully know what they’re talking about. And if you are looking to influencers to tell you what to think about certain issues then you’re part of the problem.

Plus, I follow influencers to take a mental break from all the stress of life, including the news. Humans are not made to take in and process heavy news and information 24/7. It’s okay to consume and create things purely for enjoyment and not information. People need to chill out.

You know consumerism also keeps people in business, though, right? I sell plushies. Nobody NEEDS plushies. But if we shame people for buying things and tell them to quit, I'd be out of business. And even on non handmade goods, people buying stuff boosts the economy and creates jobs. For example, Amazon is huge... they're constantly building Amazon warehouses, which is creating jobs. And the more people order, the more delivery drivers are needed too. Walmart is huge. Now Walmart has Spark, their own delivery service. More jobs for people.

I'm sorry but this just seems like a really weird misguided attempt at... I'm not even sure what lol. It's not like telling people to buy less helps the people who don't have what they need to live.

And as far as the conflicts go, why would you want people who are ABSOLUTELY NOT QUALIFIED to speak on these topics? That's how misinformation spreads, for one. And for two, discussing religion and politics typically only spreads MORE hate/conflict. And three, I'm sorry to say it, but it's not her job to speak on it. Like my doctor sees hundreds of patients a month, but I wouldn't want him talking to me about anything other than my health. People who watch YouTubers are typically doing so for entertainment and a mental break from life, we shouldn't basically ruin the one reprieve we get by talking about all the horrendous sh*t going on in the world. We all know what's happening because that's what the news is for. Unless someone's job is to actually speak on these topics, they honestly probably shouldn't.

There’s a difference between buying one or two plushies vs buying 100 of them. Just like people who spend thousands on multiple handbags, just for them to be “out of style” a couple months later. Or Milena when she buys a shit ton of clothes, just to “declutter” all of it away and then buy a shit ton more. Repeat, repeat. Also, these influencers only share products/services from brands that they make commissions on. They have the money to buy whatever they want, yet they receive products for free and then promote it to their followers to make money off of. We’re talking about OVERconsumption. It’s ridiculous.

Yes it’s important to be informed on these issues but honestly I’d rather Milena not speak on it. A lot of these influencers do half assed research and lazily repost some random instagram post about Palestine and that’s it.

Who is that helping? Half of them don’t even know this conflict goes back DECADES and the actual history of the situation is much more complex than a quick google search.

I don’t think Milena should speak about this in the same way I wouldn’t want Harry Styles talking about issues with the Indian government or Olivia Rodrigo talking about the corruption in Nicaragua. And let’s be real Milena probably doesn’t know shit about the situation.

Now asking someone like Gigi Hadid to speak up on this is different, considering her Palestinian ancestry, I would expect her to since she would be more knowledgeable on the topic.

There’s a difference between wanting to sell a product for a living and influencing: being out of touch, wearing 600$ dresses, saying you purged your wardrobe but somehow having new dresses everyday etc. THATS the part that harms others. People are working under terrible conditions to produce those clothes so the least one can do is shop in moderation and stop profiting out of people somewhere around the world that get 1$ from the 600$ purchase.
