This is literally every grocery store ever. Electronic locks have been on carts since I was a kid....20 years ago

True, but it only happens if you exit without going through the checkout lanes. If you leave through the lanes, it won't lock.
Not according to several stories we've seen on this sub alone.

I’ve absolutely seen them lock up on people with carts full of bagged groceries, the customer service employee didn’t even bother to check the receipt so I bet they’re just as tired of these as customers are.
