The UCS B-wing gets alot of hate for being "ugly" but I genuinely don't see why. By looks alone it has to be one of my top 10 star wars sets. Can anyone explain why it is so hated?
QuestionIt is massive, so much so that displaying it is a little difficult.
Not sure what that has to do with anything. The UCS Star Destroyer and Falcon are "massive" but no one complains about them...?
You expect those to be massive. The B-wing is a starfighter, like the X-, Y- and A-Wings, but the display footprint is so much larger.
Except that's demonstrably not true. The B-Wing display is angled and actually is shorter lengthwise than the Y-Wing, and it's also narrower in width.
So what you're saying is people are getting more value for money than they previously perceived and that's a bad thing? lol
I’ve heard that it was heavily discounted by Lego, and people shunned it due to the poor execution of the cockpit. I would say disdain had to be pretty widespread for them to discount a UCS set.
Yeah it wasn't popular at the time (here is one article I found that says it was discounted 50% (!!!!) at LEGO stores - http://www.bricksandbloks.com/lego-star-wars-may-the-4th-sale-50-off-ucs-b-wing-free-hoth-han-solo/) but people have seen the light since. It's by far the best looking B-Wing LEGO has made. The play scale ones are the ugly ones.
I can confirm. I bought it for $99.98 May the 4th 2013.
What hurt it the most was the piece count and timing. $199 for 1487 pieces. Was released Oct 2012, then a few months later in June 2013 10240 Red Five Wing was released 1559 pieces for a more iconic ship at the same price.
The just retired A Wing suffered from the same issue, overpriced and released during a time with lots of other great sets for similar dollar values.
This is one of my favorite ships in the saga, and this set is a white whale I’ve been wanting to get my hands on. I wouldn’t mind at all if they came out with a new, smaller play scale version similar to the Slave I.
It’s still not as bad as the Twilight. I personally think the B Wing looks pretty good.
Oh shit
Just searched the twilight up and it's god awful
Yeah its a shame as i liked the twilight on screen, hopefully we'll get a remake soon and they can do it justice (it is kinda just a blob of gray ship so only so much they can do)
I think what Lego got wrong was they made the ship too tall.
If you look at the ship in tcw, it is alot shorter than the Lego one
But is it really that small? It's got a small 2 story hanger in the back and a medical section. I was never a fan of the ship in the show, and having never seen the lego set because I missed tcw until reruns, but now that I have seen both I think lego gave it a pretty good try.
I like the design of the ship in the movie but the Lego set was at many points very bad designed (even for this time). The wings were just blank studs without anything and the cockpit front is just awful.
I dont think we will get this set again, its just to unknown
I like it overall but I have two issues with it: 1. The stub wings are built bottom to top so you have “female” bricks showing on one side and “male” on the other. Should be built with SNOT techniques. 2. The stub wings are moved “manually”. As a UCS set LEGO should have built it with some sort of geared mechanism to fold / extend the wings.
What does male and female bricks mean?
Usually it's referred to as "studs" and "antistuds."
Sorry, I meant studs - not bricks. Bottom of brick is female, top is male.
This is a set I would love, but it’s too expensive for me to get now unfortunately. I have 75050 which is one of my favourites.
UGLY!?! PEOPLE SAY THAT SHIP IS UGLY!?!
That ship is so cool!!!
And for some reason, super underrated.
Agreed
the cockpit is a bit rough
How exactly?
It's not anchored in any way, in and of itself. There is kind of a strap that holds it in place. Not exactly a deal breaker for me, but it is less than ideal
This is my first USC and a come back to lego after over 30 years. I bought it just because it was so unwanted (and lego at that time wasn’t as hot as now in my local market). It was relatively cheap and I never built any lego that big so I just bought it.
It was GREAT and made me continue to buy X , Y, A , MF and Death Star. B Wing still one of my favor. I try to rebuild it every year.
I love the B-Wing. I use it in Star Wars Squadrons as my main, and it gets a lot of grief.
They say that it’s slow and unwieldy, but it’s because they don’t know how to fly it properly. And because it gets shot down easier than an improperly balanced Defender. Many high-levels look at B-Wings as easy prey, and yeah… they’re generally right.
The general consensus is that the B-Wing is the ship you fly if one of two conditions are met: either you’re so far ahead that you can’t lose the match, or you’re so far behind that you can’t possibly win. Either way, it no longer matters!
There were several tournaments this year, and though we only won a few matches, my B-Wing was an undeniable crowd-pleaser. See, the thing is, the B-Wing is ungodly powerful, despite it’s alleged drawbacks. (It does Ion damage as well as traditional energy damage.) Stick a Rotary Cannon on that puppy and you got a Corvette melting machine!
Have you ever watched Rob Roy? Remember the duel at the end when Liam Neeson fought Tim Roth? Tim used a flashy, lightning fast rapier and lit Liam up with numerous slashes and stabs, quickly reducing him to a bloody mess. Liam, who fought with a massive, two-handed Scottish Claymore, was just too slow to parry the faster, more nimble rapier.
But just as Tim was toying around, looking for more ways to humiliate the bumpkin with the broadsword, Liam hefts his blade and slams it brutally down upon Tim’s shoulder. Whereas a rapier would have been deflected or entangled in the clavicle of a human body, Rob Roy’s Claymore sings through the air, driving through bone and meat, to cleave lung and heart in a sputtering and thoroughly unexpected shock.
When you swap out to a B-Wing and use it to wipe the other team, you can expect the bystanders to feel that same level of audacious shock.
Now, Liam totally dies from the millions of rapier attacks, make no mistake. As a B-Wing pilot, you shouldn’t expect any less. And to be honest, it is precisely that sheer futility that fuels the most gratifying dopamine rush that comes from hefting your archaic, mocked broadsword, and giving those Imperial dogs the good ol’ Roy.
(Yes, that was a dog food pun.)
I’m still yet to play Squadrons. In the old X-wing game the B-wing was pretty much a slightly slower more heavily armed X-wing and better at shooting TIEs than the Y-wing. It was meant to be better than the Y-wing in everything except maybe durability.
It’s kinda fire
It looks like the letter t, and not the letter B
Fun fact, it’s called the b wing cause b stands for blade and it looks like a knife!
Also when making return of the Jedi the referred to the new rebel ships as “a ship” and “B ship” which eventually stuck and became the A wing and b wing
Lol
On the display stand it stands about as tall as the UCS Slave I. By size alone I wouldn't call it a play set by any means
Is it hated? I love B-wings so I am biased towards them. My only complaint is the stand, which there probably isn't a way around, but it is far less stable than other UCS sets.
Huge positive vs the playsets: I cannot stand that one side has studs and the other doesn't of the "blade", whereas the UCS has studs on both sides, is beautifully contoured and yeah... I love this set
I’ve never heard anyone hating it but the B-Wing seems to have always been the black sheep of Rebel fighters compared to the X-Wing and Y-Wing.
I always thought this ship sucked but after getting it it's possibly my favorite or second favorite UCS. As others have said, the cockpit is probably the weakest part, the big wind screen doesn't even connect to anything and just sort of floats in place, held down by a strap of bendy clip connections and the inverted smooth bubble things. Not my favorite part of it for sure. The main wing is probably the coolest part, I love how smooth it comes out
For me it’s just because I hate B wings
They hate it because it looks like a B-Wing
Cockpit isn’t a specialised price
I think it looks pretty accurate
Some people like it, some people dont
It's not a specialized piece but it does have a unique print.
Not, the reason it is hated is because it isn’t a specialised piece
I mean. its a B wing lol
Wdym
So by design the B wing is a combination heavy fighter bomber and by combining the “in universe canon” design it was always practicality over looks. so its like yeah its kinda odd and looks either too pointy or too flat so I get it but still Its a B wing so its doing its best
No minifigures either
Wow that is amazing
Probably the cockpit being inaccurate due to parts. I would like to have an upgrade though
Huh? It looks accurate to me
My only gripe with it is that they used a way too small canopy piece that you would normally find on a non-UCS version. They should have just made a new piece like they did recently with the A-Wing.
I think it looks great. And would fit the mini fig scale of most play sets
Lol have you build the ucs ? Its pretty big in size.
Do you own this set? Most come with 2 different variants of light bluish gray. Which is very upsetting to some but I think it gives texture.
Unfortunately I don't own this set since it sells for around £450 which is extremely overpriced for what it is
I own this set and have no idea what you're talking about, all the grey parts are the normal light bluish grey.
I'm happy your set did not. Unfortunately for me and my friend group, all of our NISB B-Wings have discoloration between Light bluish gray bricks. Check EuroBricks to confirm my statement.
Other question. Why is this even called „b-wing“ i mean i can see the coherence in any other star wars ship but this just confuses me. X-wing sure i get it. Y-wing yeah pretty straightforward even the A-wing kinda looks like an A but wtf is this??
I used to be confused about this too but it was explained in starwars rebels
Basically, the Mon calamari who created the first B-wing, named it the blade-wing (obviously, that makes alot more sense) but then when he gave the design to the rebel alliance they changed the name to fit in with the rest of their fleet
Thanks for the answer!
That's the ret-conned answer. Originally in filming ROTJ the A-Wing and B-Wing were referred to by Lucasfilm as "A fighter" and "B fighter" - so the names stuck.
Cockpit and ugly ass stand
Even just the regular ship, i saw it as ugly. Of all the star war ships it had the least playability and least display appeal to me of most of the ships that were ever made.
That’s an awesome piece. Doesn’t seem like a hook and fishing line would difficult to use for displaying.
Cockpit
I bought this on release date. It was a nightmare to build. Fell apart on me multiple times. It has literally been sitting in the same spot since. I’m too afraid to pick it up. It’s the only time I had a UCS set fall apart. It does look pretty good though.
I had that as a kid it was a personal favorite
I can’t explain because I don’t know. All I can say is some sets get more people’s admiration. Like the rebels ghost, I’ve never really connected with rebels so although I like the look of the sets I’ve never had the urge to buy them
You're probably (mis)extrapolating the opinions of a few to the collective. 10227 is one of the less common UCS sets and is very impressive on the shelf.
