Just wondering if some guards like the Philly shell, high guard, cross guard or the Thai long guard would work in kyokushin and if not what other guards would? Thanks!

I agree, play. We can be guilty sticking to tradition, but greatness comes with innovation and daring to be different.
Thanks!
From my own experience:
- Long guard I like, I did point karate before Kyokushin so it feels like an old friend.
- high guard I prefer when face punches are in play, as it can expose ribs in Kyokushin ruleset and slow your strikes down
- Philly shell. Played with it and enjoy it, confuses a few opponents.
There more play around with gaurds the more I find that common guards form the basis and just adjusting those to what works is the best.
Not going to say no, but I see guards determined more by distance and offensive styles more than being static.
I found myself using high guard more because I fought closer range.
If I moved more into mid range, my hands were more of a mid guard so I could see a little better but be prepared for high kicks.
I rarely used a low, long guard because I wasn’t much of a kicker, but I would usually back up far enough to where I didn’t need a guard so I could catch a breath.
Honestly, just try what ever during Kumite in class. That's the best place to play around with it, with the least amount of real risk.
