I’ve carried a benchmade mini griptiliian for years, upgraded to an Ultratech, loved it but wanted something a bit beefier and more substantial. I was set on a Mictrotech Scarab until I saw the Socom Alpha mini (3.75 inch fixed blade). I wanted to get the Scarab to replace my Ultratech, but I’m now considering carrying a fixed blade AND my Ultratech. Ultratech for quick cuts and not to intimidate people around me, fixed blade as a bulletproof backup and to use for more heavy tasks. Any thoughts on this matter? I feel crazy for wanting to carrying 2 knives lol. Photo is my current Ultratech and the Socom Mini that caught my eye
Thinking about EDC’ing a fixed blade. Does anyone carry both a folder and a fixed blade?
DiscussionYup, buck 110 and a buck 119. Or as I call it, my buck 229
I carry a Smith and Wesson piece of junk folder with a half serrated blade for people who say "hey, can I borrow your knife for a minute?" and a little SPEW from CRKT that I bought on a lark and is way better than I expected for when I need to cut something.
Everyday…
Totally normal... I also carry EDC and a Fixblade sometimes... Not everyday but from time to time its that day for 2 knives...😉
I’m pretty much a one knife at a time guy, but I can see why some would want two. Some days, I carry a folder, some a fixed. All my fixed blades are small enough that I remove the clips and pocket them.
Not at the same time but i did edc the fällkniven f1 for a couple of years
Okay but why?
Were you living in the woods or something? 🤔
No i live in the city. Its a great knife.
Not trying to tell you what to do, but I am curious to know for which applications you would need such a big blade in the city. Merely being curious here. 🤔
Its not realy that big same blade length as a manix 2 mostly i peeled apples with it used it as door stopper occasionaly.
Oh, right, I was confusing the blade length with something else. Whoopsadoodle! 😱
Folder in my pocket and scout carry one of 4 inch fixed blades. The folder is for anything small the fixed is for bigger stuff or if i had to do any emergency response type thing. I worked rescue for 8 years its just a habit.
I did today…but one of them was a NRS Co-Pilot. The other a mini bugout.
Yes, I do carry a fixed blade and a folder.
What you would like is nothing I would know. I like my edc fixed to be small to medium in blade length. Like the Esee Izula or the FDX 66, or the K4edc Stich (or even a Kizer Harpoon, it has a very acute and thin tip though). Like to have a small fixed for the dirtier and heavier tasks, so I won't put too much stress on my folder or damage its edge. I like my edc fixed to be carbon steel too, very easy to fix, since it's used for heavier and dirtier tasks mainly. I like my folder to be more used for cleaner and light to medium tasks. No abusing the folder, keeping folder nice and clean and smooth-edged. I like appendix carry or next to the belt buckle scout carry for me smol fixies. Folder for more slicing, fixed for more robust, in general. Typically I like my folder to have the longer blade, in case I want to quarter a big burger so I can eat it like a civilized person, and my folder is also the food safe tasks one. Besides carbon steel I like tool steel as D2 or 3V on me small fixed too.
Dunno about you personally, but I hope my personal preferences might help you to sort out for yourself what you are looking for in a folder and in a fixed, what you want them for, and which properties you want them to have respectively for the tasks you have in mind for them. 🫡
PS:
Because why limit yourself to a single pocket knife that needs to do it all, that would just be a waste of possibilities to enjoy your knife hobby. 😇
I appendix carry a fixed blade opposite of my gun and have a folder mossst the time. I don’t even notice the fixed blade most the time.
