I understand, but what I’m saying is, what if, in the future, AI gets so good that when you hear a song on a speaker you literally can’t tell if it’s John Coltrane or AI Coltrane? I think that’s a long way off, if ever. I just think it’s an interesting question about the nature of art.

Coltrane is a bad example because all his work is out there, and he's dead, so anything 'new' is unlikely to be him. But even using this example, Coltrane's music isn't just a collection of expertly played notes, every piece fits into our larger understanding of his journey as a musician. The human context is what makes the music meaningful as much as the notes or playing does.

if a human forger fakes a Da Vinci painting, how do we deal with that currently? Sure, someone might hang the forgery in their mansion and impress their guests, but eventually it'll be found out and rendered worthless. It's not that different in this case.

Actually maybe a better example is if someone uses modern tech to make a replica of a Da Vinci. This doesn't require AI and has been happening for decades. You can see images of the mona lisa all over the place, but everyone knows it's not the real one and people still go all the way to Paris for that experience.

I'm really not interested in music where I can't figure out at least a little, what the person who created it is like, how they think about music, what they were thinking or feeling when they wrote or performed a piece.

Luckily, giving the listener ways to know a little about the artist is a thing we've been doing for a long time, so almost all music that I like gives me this opportunity.

I feel that the point of art is human communication. If there's no human, there's nothing to communicate, and therefore I'm not interested.

If people want to listen to computer generated music then that’s on them. What people choose to listen to will not affect music because most musicians play for their love of music, not for the affectation or validation of an audience. Pop stars and rappers are royally fucked though because they tend to have a different prerogative when it comes to recognition, attention, money and vanity but not jazz musicians.

'underground' rap has existed for a long time and is full of the exact same types of people you find in jazz, who are truly in it for the art and not any fame (which is extremely rare)

It's probably worse news for studio musicians than for performing musicians. I can see a lot of artists that recorded sample libraries, fills and rhythm for pop tracks, or simple scores for television, losing work to AI.

But artists whose music has a performance element to it aren't going anywhere any time soon.

AI is just another tool. There will be many talented artists who learn to use AI to enhance their writing, not just do the writing for them. AI will allow artists to create in ways they wouldn’t have been able to do before.

The average Joe with no musical ability or understanding will be clearly distinguishable from a true musician who knows how to use AI effectively.

Yeah exactly. I can’t imagine depending on AI for anything, especially anything artistic or expressive. That almost completely defeats the purpose. I can imagine it would be a nightmare to have AI as a crutch also

How do you feel about MIDI instruments?

Imagine you’re a passionate songwriter, but you’re struggling to find committed, like-minded musicians in your area who want to make similar music. I would not say that your music is less because you didn’t authentically play and record each instrument. If you’ve got software that can help you fill in and complete your ideas, that gives you the chance to exercise your songwriting ability and express yourself more freely.

You’re already using many tools to in your day to day life that “cheapen” the core experience. Posting on Reddit vs having a real one on one discussion, for example. Isn’t this the antithesis of communication? Or, rather, is it a tool that has made communication more accessible, opening up dialogues that likely never would have occurred otherwise?

A MIDI instrument is still a keyboard though. With today's tech the artist's touch and message can get through just as well on a MIDI grand piano, as a real one.

While I agree that AI music is useless, this is a bad argument to make.

AI will never be able to mimic the interaction and soulful communication that makes up the soul of jazz music. It can imitate other genres but with jazz in particular it will never understand the level of interaction and spontaneous creativity that happens while jamming.

Generative AI is good at creating bland, derivative copies of already existing music. In other words: it's good at creating Muzak.

So if you prefer to listen to and play original music, I don't think it will be a big deal. I'm not worried.

as someone in tech - AI is mostly a scam. The worry isn't that it will replace real artists. The worry is that it fulfills its real function - to prop up demand for fossil fuels - and climate change wipes us all out.

AI can’t (currently) invent anything new - it can only extrapolate (and interpolate) things that already exist.

Generative AI could (with quite a bit of help) give you “Shake It Up in the style of Miles Davis” fairly easily, but couldn’t give you an original piece of art.

The kind of general AI that could invent something new and emotionally interesting isn’t (in my actually professional opinion) anything that anybody old enough to be reading this is ever going to have to worry about.

DJs have been the biggest threat to musicians getting gigs since I can remember. We need to deal with them and see if we have the strength left to fight AI. Or is that what they were planning all along....This isn't as good of an answer as I thought it would be....
