A Definitive Ranking of Every Can Album
I think Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days could all have a fair argument for them to be #1. I would personally go with Future days because it manages to include some really cool abstract/ambient/out there sounds, without becoming unlistenable like some of the weaker parts of Tago Mago. Plus the songs future days and moonshake are just all-time bangers
Tago and Ege Bamyasi are so superior, but future days is pretty solid too.
Where my Monster Movie fans at? Father Cannot Yell is my personal favorite Can song.
You Doo Right for me.
Yup that’s great too. I Love the driving beat both those songs have.
one of my favorites
Tago Mago is my number one. Halleluwah is one of the few songs I’ve heard where I just say “holy shit”. It’s one drum beat over and over yeah but an absolute adventure of a song.
The 18 mins always flieessss by too
Future Days is my favorite pretty easily. Just doesn’t have a weak spot. If Tago Mago didn’t have Aumgn and peking O i might put that #1.
Peking o and aumgn are like a slow descent into insanity and horror and they totally work with the album itself imo. I always thought tago mago had like this nuclear apocalypse/bad trip type vibe that is unique to other can records. Peking o is like the closest thing to a musical salvia trip imo.
I see what you're saying, but of all the psychedelic experiences I've had salvia produced the least rewarding one by far lol. And that's kinda where I stand with Peking O and Aumgn. If you ditch them, and then trim Hallelujah by just a few mins so that it fits comfortably alongside Bring Me Coffee or Tea on side 2 of a 12" record, then that there is the tightest psychedelic rock album of all time (imo).
Tago Mago all the way for me. What a great record
I know it’s not really an album, but the soundtracks compilation is just fantastic as well. And all the unreleased Mooney-era stuff is just great.
Where my Landed heads at?
I get why it gets overlooked (it's one of my nominees for "the band should go back and remix this"), but yeah it otherwise has a lot to like.
I think it might be their most underrated. I still probably rank it like 5 or 6, but it totally deserves attention.
Hunters and Collectors has stuck with me ever since it was reissued.
Saw Delight should be higher than Flow Motion, which is in desperate need of a better vocalist.
Monster Movie is better than the fairly over-rated Babaluma.
A-side of self-titled is decent, but the b-side really brings it down. Those last few albums are pretty dire.
agree on giving saw delight it’s flowers (flow motion is really pretty forgettable imo)
Babaluma is kinda underrated imo? i never see it any conversations but some of the sonic experimentation with dissonance and more electronic sounding rhythms is really great :0
Babaluma is kind of the go-to underrated album, but it has a few tracks like Come Sta and Splash that are pretty forgettable.
Malcom Mooney can is underrated in general
Between Delay 68 and the Lost Tapes it’s crazy how much quality material from his tenure went unreleased.
I need to dig deeper into Can. All I know is when I hear Moonshake, those drums put a wiggle in my step. That would be my Saturday Night Fever walking song.
I’m just here to say that although Soundtracks, Delay 1968, and Lost Tapes are technically compilations, they are 100% essential.
I love vitamin C , heard it on Inherent Vice, that was my first intro to them
Tago Mago will always be my number one, but that and Ege Bamyasi are the clear 1 and 2. I really like all of their albums down to Saw Delite (as far as this ranking). I think those sort of mid tier CAN albums are pretty underrated and overlooked because they aren't as monumental as the top tier.
