This leather jacket is around 30yrs old. It is very well loved. It has a large rip on the sleeve and I want to repair it but I don’t know what my options are. TYIA

If you don’t have a shoe repair shop near you try bringing it to a reputable seamstress. She’ll probably be able to repair it.

Check with your local dry cleaners, too. Lots of cleaners will have the ability to do repairs and alterations in house, or they'll sub it to someone they know.

Last month, I replaced a strap on a bag I had made for my wife. She wanted both sides of the strap to be finished leather, so I just laid two pieces (~2 mm thick) back-to-back and popped it through the machine. At that thickness, the all-purpose needle had no trouble with the leather.
I'm just amazed you didn't break the needle! Did you swap it out for at least a 100/16?
I'm in Chicago, so a lot of my clothes are mid-weight cotton or light-weight canvas. I usually just keep a 90/14 (Schmetz) in the machine, unless I'm working with very fine or gauzy fabrics, or legitimately heavy leather (> 4mm).
So, those two layers of 2mm leather were probably done with a 90/14, though it could have been an 80/12-- I didn't actually check, just ran a small test patch and then ran the strap.
Do remember that men also tailor and sew alterations.

The closest shoe repair shop is over 20 miles away, is it worth the expense to travel over 40 miles plus pay a professional in a franchise shop (so on the more expensive side of things) for a jacket that already looks very worn? Would it likely be done the same day or will I have to make the trip twice?

Edit : this was a genuine question as I didn’t know how big a job it would myself be vs the faff of going to a repair shop due to my particular area being sparce of services plus it being a shabby jacket. I’ve got a few suggestions to tide him over until I can get to that town to have a professional take a gander. Annoyingly, it’s a franchise repair shop with zero competition so they are very pricey. I looked a few years back to get my NewRock boots reheeled and I was flabbergasted at the prices. Even their key cutting is expensive. :(

You could always try to find a place you could ship to. It would open your pricing options up a bit.
Sometimes the true answer delivered by hard-earned personal experience for how to do something is to get a professional to do it.
The sub is called “howto” for a reason. If people are going to give advice then give actual repair instructions and then whether or not it’s suitable for someone with no experience to try it. Then the person can make up their own mind.

The nearest shoe repair shop is over 20 miles away and I’d need to do the trip 4 times, that’s a total of at least 80 miles.
Assume I get ~40 miles to the gallon, I’d use 2 gallons to drive 80 miles.
The RAC site says that petrol is currently 146.66 pence per litre. There are roughly 4.5 litres in a gallon
4.5 x 147 = 661.6 pence for 1 gallon
That’s £13.23 for 2 gallons of petrol.
Is my math wrong?
So 40 miles would probably be closer to £15/£20
Last time I looked in the shoe repair shop (years ago), it was over £30 to re-heel a shoe which seemed awfully expensive, I’ll phone tomorrow but I’d be surprised if it was less than £30 for a leather repair which they would class as a skilled job. £40/£50 when we’re struggling to keep our house from getting damp in the cold during a cost of living crisis has more value than it did in previous years.
Are you really factoring cost based off the depreciation that would happen over 40 miles. If you looked at the link, the gas cost was about 1/3rd of what that site used to calculate the number you quoted. Divide the 15 by 3 and you have a $5, or in your case £5 gas cost for the drive.
I’m using that site as a guage to show that the fuel in UK is more expensive but it’s going to around £15/£20 because I’d need to do the 40 mile trip twice as I was told it’s unlikely to be a same day pick-up.

Honestly, you could fix this with a needle and (seriously the right kind of) thread (don't skimp) in two hours, max. If you know how to hand-sew, that is.
You could learn the skills to put in those two hours with about 10-15 hours on YouTube, if you search for hand-sewn leather repair.
So, it really is just a matter of what you want to do. Wanna learn how to fix this yourself? Totally doable, and if you can't find those resources hit me in DMs, and I'll help.
I’m okay at hand sewing but I’d not say very good yet. Ive made a few kids costumes and outfits but only ever using jersey or cotton. Id love to try fixing his jacket because it’s just kinda cool to know how to but I worry I’d make a ham of sewing it. I think he might be down for a leather patch though which feels less worrisome for some reason?

Yes you can repair this, depending on where the tear is and how much movement that section gets will determine how well the repair takes.
Go onto youtube and search tear in leather, usually you'll be looking at repairs in leather furniture, but it's the same thing.
The process is pretty straightforward, you adhere a backer patch to the inside of the leather where the tear is, and then use the goop from the leather repair kit to seal the edges of the tear back together. You sand it a little to make sure it blends in, then you use a leather dye kit to make sure it matches the surrounding area.
I've used this technique to repair an old but very pricey sofa and it worked great, but I would practice on something you don't care about first, just to get the technique down.
Maybe you could mail it. USPS, FedEx and UPS all pick up. For a20 mile delivery, it'd add only a moderate expense on top of a repair.
Get it to a professional. You won't regret it.

I don't know if it's the norm, but if they're anything like my local cobbler; they're a professional in a franchise shop. Makes more sense to set up shop in the back of a shoe store, where people are probably going to be doing shoe-related business, than to have their own separate place. Like how crafts stores have the framing business in the back, or Best Buy has the geek squad counter.
Remember, this isn't a strictly DIY sub, it's a how-to sub. How to do this is to do it right, especially when it's an item of sentimental value. How to do this is to pay someone who knows how to do it right.
It’s just the franchise shop. No skilled cobbler in the back but I know what you mean, it used to be like that in the 80s/90s but not now, not in my neck of the woods.
A few people have suggested asking the local seamstress type services and I actually know of a reupholster place locally that does leather so I think they might be my first port of call.
I totally appreciate that the best solution might be to get someone pro to do it, the other guy was just giving me aggro about the fact we don’t want to spend about £40/£50 on a repair just now due to reasons and it got a bit pissy.

You could call and ask but I doubt it. I had a wingback chair redone in leather many years ago and it was expensive for sure. Plus I just noticed that it was not even real leather (surface checking and chunks falling off!). So make sure you double check the work.
It’s a leather chair recliner I bought off someone for about $100 and I typically don’t like spending more than 30% the cost of what I paid for something to repair a little thing on it. That’s why I’ve been considering learning how to do it myself but I already have so much on my plate

If I could find a moisturiser that highlights the wear and tear marks, like a stain does on wood, I could make a solid argument for keeping it healthy. He was sad when it ripped. Good tip.
He’s a big bearded Viking type guy and if he could he’d have his whole world smell like strawberry & peach. I love the idea of infusing his jacket to smell like a bag of starburst sweets.
I think I need to have a jacket intervention with him though, it’s obviously in need of a little TLC to perk it up after 30 years hard graft & keep it going for many more. He’s just worried it would look new and soulless if it was moistured/waxed but I don’t think that needs to be the case if you can make your own.

There are three lines of repair.
The risk you run into is the sutures may tear the leather depending on age and wear location of the repair---and the quality of the sutures/consistency is are going to be visible.
From the perspective of a guy that has sentiment attached to my leather jacket...it depends on your husband, whether or not you want to surprise him with a repair...because both directions alter the jacket permanently....

The jacket is “well worn” but in all honestly, it low-key looks like a hobbo jacket and he loves that about it. He isn’t sentimental about much and would normally admit defeat and throw out a jacket that is no longer weather proof (we live in Scotland) but he got this from his late grandmother when he was newly a teenager, she bought it big and told him it was for him to grow into so it would last a lifetime. He intends to make it last but he likes that it battlescared.

Cosplayer chiming in! For a good temporary fix, I suggest either the saddle or ladder stitch (be careful not to pull hard for the latter option). For a long-term fix, I'd bring it to a shoe shop or somewhere that works with leather and see if they can get you a more professional fix. This will be more expensive than a DIY stitch, but will last you in the long-term

He may choose to wait to get it sorted properly but if not, Id guess he’ll pick your gaudy baseball stitch idea & I bet it will be with orange or lime green thread to give it zing.
This might work. Maybe. Cut a square of 100% cotton fabric larger than the hole and poke it in laying flat so it acts as a backing for the next stage. Spend £5 on some “wondaweb” or tailors tape or whatever the iron activate glue tape is called. Cut the tape into sections and place on top of the cotton, underneath the leather, all the way round the hole, with the tape poking out ready for the leather flap to lay on. Fold down the leather flap. Place a tea towel on top and iron it without steam on a high setting. The tape might bond the leather to the cotton enough for a fix. Maybe.
Oooh, I have that stuff in my sewing box. I’ve never ironed leather, I’ll need to research what it’s heat resistance/ tolerance is but I like this idea & think it’s within my skill set. Thank you. :)
There are some decent adhesive patches or heat activated patches available you could apply from the inside. Not expensive, but will also look- not expensive. Maybe it is a way to minimize spread until a professional could address it. Best

I had a coat with a similar tear repaired at a tailor. They open up the inside lining, and glued it closed with a leather patch on the back side. My coat was fairly new when tragedy struck, but I'm sure that is the same repair you will need done. It didn't cost very much. Good luck :)

I use to have a jacket like that. I wore it on all kinds of adventures. One time I was in Egypt trying to locate the ark of the covenant and a bunch of Nazis we’re trying to beat me to the artifact. We got into a little tussle and my jacket got ripped. No worries I just had someone from our wardrobe department patch it up. Good as new for my next adventure in India.
Funnily enough that’s how he defends its honour against friendly attacks from friends.

If it was me id get a donor fabric and get rubber cement and apply it to the back side of leather and then onto the donor fabric. Wont be perfect but will look okay and will fix the problem. I wouldnt stitch it. Stitches will tear again and look worse
Yeah, I was wary to try stitching it. The leather is old & soft so I reckon it would be even more likely to get big holes and act all funky on me.

In the motorcycle world we wear a lot of leather stuffs. There is a guy, Barnacle Bill, who is known all over the country as the leather repair wizard. You can imagine the kind of leather damage you get when you crash a motorcycle... This guy can make two torn threads, a button and one pocket look like a brand new riding suit. Plus, its not as expensive as you might think.
If he cant fix it, I guarantee he can point you in the right direction to someone who can.

Clean the area around the tear: Use a leather cleaner or mild soap and water to clean the area around the tear. Make sure the area is completely dry before moving on to the next step.
Apply leather glue: Apply a small amount of leather glue to the edges of the tear. Use a toothpick or cotton swab to spread the glue evenly.
Join the edges of the tear: Carefully bring the edges of the tear together and hold them firmly until the glue sets. You can use a binder clip or clothespin to hold the edges in place while the glue dries.
Fill in the tear: Use a leather repair compound to fill in any gaps or holes in the tear. Apply the compound in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry completely before adding another.
Sand and smooth: Once the repair compound is dry, use sandpaper or a sanding block to smooth out any rough edges or bumps. Be careful not to sand too much or you may damage the leather.
Finish the repair: Use a leather dye or shoe polish to match the color of the repaired area to the rest of the jacket. Apply a leather conditioner to the entire jacket to keep it soft and supple.
Note: If the tear is too large or complicated to repair yourself, it's best to take the jacket to a professional leather repair shop. They have the tools and expertise to handle more complex repairs.

I know it feels so wrong to sand leather but leather is more durable than it might seem.
A skilled seamstress or Leather worker should be able to repair it, also a upholstery shop could do it.
As someone who does some amount of leather work, this seems like an easy fix.
As many others have said here, find someone who does this kind of work.
The thing I'll add to that is this: if you person you find to fix this seems in any way hesitant, dump them and move on. This repair should be really simple, and anyone who shows even a little doubt about it isn't someone you want to mess with it.

Yeah the UK is struggling but being up in the North of Scotland brings extra challenges because our weather is much worse and there is a very low population so people kind of just forget about us. To be fair, that’s why we like being here, it’s JUST on the grid but we get a lot of off-grid perks. :) crap weather & very cold in our houses this winter.

I’m confused why you are asking… From the look of this jacket you’re obviously MacGyver and you can fix anything.
They make spray adhesive that is flexible I use it to layer my quilt tops to the batting when making quilts. A small can is about $5. Definitely not a permanent fix but it would probably temporarily work.
If you were doing it would you through the ‘padding’ layer and onto the internal lining or would you add in an extra layer as a bond? Thank you.

Look for a really interesting large patch and sew--or have shoe repair or someone who does alterations sew--the patch over the area. It will reinforce the area which (can be weakened if it is just sewn with a zigzag stitch).
Could make the jacket look even cooler than it is now!

Iron on patches, except in this case reverse the patch with the adhesive side out and put it on the inside of the jacket. Line up the tear as best you can and carefully press down with hot iron.
You need a special heavy needle for leather, a thimble or gloves helps too. Fun to sew otherwise. Takes patience. Fixing yourself adds to the character of the jacket in my opinion.

Please take it to a shoe repair shop. They will make the best repair possible for usually a very reasonable cost.
