Just saw a couple things saying northern lights have a high possibility of being visible tonight. Anyone know any good places within an hour or two drive to go see them? I’d love to find somewhere on the lakeshore
I literally live in the Manistee National Forest and it's on 45 minutes from gr
That's true; it's a vast place. The darkest places are not within 45 minutes of GR, however.
Definitely following. Fingers crossed for a clear-ish night.
Radar is showing that most of west/central michigan is going to received cloud and possible rain around 11pm-1am, depending on region. Do we have any clue on if we might see them early in the evening or would it be late?
2-5 am is the peak
Most reading I have done says "Friday night into Saturday" so I am assuming late tonight into the early jours of Saturday....
White River roadside park is one hour north and it's open 24 hours. It's not near any towns whatsoever and I can personally attest to it being dark AF up here. Plus you can literally drive in and park, sit along the white river on a picnic table and use a relatively clean bathroom, for free. Newaygo county Sheriff's are usually super chill too, if you got rolled up on, and told them you were watching the sky they'll just say cool have a good night.
Get away from city lights, clear Northern skies and look up.
Lakeshore would be real tough within an hour, also it's going to be 40 or lower out there next to the water. I'd take M-37 (Alpine) north up to between Grant and Newaygo, it's more sparsely populated.
Another poster mentioned the light pollution map. If you don't mind going a little further you can get to Brohman on the same road. It's about 60 miles north of GR and there's a fair drop off in LP by the time you get up there.
The reason I recommend M-37 is that you can still drive fairly fast, it's hard to get lost, and you won't have to exit on and off the highway to check for a spot to park.
tl;dr take m37 north for an hour.
Awesome! I appreciate the tips! It looks like my dad had same idea so I don’t have to drive anymore and we gonna be going up to wilderness!
Do we know what time to expect them?
Fisk nob county park, algoma just south of 22 mile rd. Highest point in Kent county
Go north and away from city light.
I read somewhere it was just Southern Michigan.
The light pollution isn't bad out in Allendale, maybe one of the parks out that way if they're open
In my vape
No one cares about your vape lol
That is one of the dumbest comments ever. OP said Northern Lights not popcorn lung.
Where you finding Northern Lights? Can't find it anywhere
Manistee National Forest is the darkest sky viewing within a few hour drive. Use a light pollution map, find a two track and cruise.
