I know right! I grabbed it so quick off the shelf. Then to my suprise the thing weighs a ton. Tall too.
I need one !!!
I did google image search, found one very similar Eva Englund may be a lead. I thought it looked European. Look more closely around sides of base, not just the base bottom for signature, it may be muted. Also found something on Cherish https://www.chairish.com/product/12758880/1980s-post-modern-rainbow-millerighe-vase
Click the link of the photo you shared it leads you to another piece. I believe this is likely a modern piece. Likely made in China or Poland.
Is there definitely no signature around the base? Not ON the base. It looks like a well made piece.
Ill check again, i thought that too. Just holding it i could tell it wasnt some cheap homegoods or ross piece.
If there’s no signature then the chances are it’s a home decor piece. It’s nice looking though!
Signatures can be like Easter eggs on glass art. You need your phone to zoom in to inspect. Some artists sign along the top or bottom rim of the piece, not just the bottom. Another trick... get in good lighting like the sun coming through a window... get the base wet and run your finger over the glass and inspect for an acid etch makers mark. Snap pics and inspect them, too. I would be shocked this isn't signed. It's exceptional.
Here is the issue I see with it just being a decor piece and the example you've given. Those were a dime a dozen in stores like Ross,Tj Maxx, and Marshall's 20 yrs ago. They sold for around $10-20. That is a very simple shape of glass... It's also on a clear base stand to keep it from tipping. Definitely not studio art.
The shape of her vase would take a tremendous amount of skill...this person should be working in a high-end studio. They took the additional time to polish the bottom. That never happens with Chinese glass. They show pontil. Some may have a grayish, cloudy, smooth bottom..but Ive never seen one be completely polished. It's too time-consuming for high production.
Here are 4 pieces of Chinese glass that I've purchased at Ross, Marshall's, and Tj Maxx in the early- mid 2000's. They are basic shapes, and two have glass bottoms for balance. The purple one is much prettier in person... It's iridescent. I actually have two... I paid $16 for both. They are a hot mess on the bottom... I think they had good skill but didn't have the time to polish the bottom.
When you image search... the only glass pieces with a hole in the middle and a polished bottom are high-end studio art. In my 30 yrs of collecting and the dozens of glass studios I've been in California... I've not come across a shape that is so complicated to make in a home decor store.
I’ve been collecting for 20 years :) I wouldn’t say that Chinese glass never has a polished base, because I don’t have any Chinese glass to check. I remember the very tall ones on the square bases well, you still see them in antique store etc titled as Murano. I agree OP’s piece is a weird one…I thought it should be signed too…..but its colours are very very similar to the one I linked to, so I’m on the fence with this one. ;)
I have a lot of Chinese paperweights... probably 75. In the 90s, the $.99 stores sold them for $1... my Mom has been a glass collector longer than I've been alive. She would go and buy every color and shape she came across... they have spilled into my collection. My husband and I came to an agreement. If it's not signed and vintage, I don't buy them anymore... I don't have enough room at this point.
Haha, I did the rush through my house, and none of them are polished. There's actually vases 5 there.. I have a few others.
There are vintage Chinese pieces in the in the summorso style with controlled bubble, but they have a sanded bottom. There are newer pieces that have a polished bottom but a simple shape. If it was mass produced, the market would be flooded. You and I have been collectors for decades. If neither of us has seen it before... It's special.
The symmetry, the shape, and the mouth of the vase tell me this isn't from an average home decor store. Even the very bottom where it's clear is nearly perfect. Personally, I would email photos to Christie's auction house and see what they would put it up for auction. It's free... and they may be able to identify the maker and an idea of the value range.
I bow to your obvious dedication to glass…like you, I don’t buy stuff anymore unless I see a big profit or I really like it. I’ll be interested to see how this pans out! ❤️ My money is still on Chinese (there, I said it!) even though I agree it’s very nicely made indeed. I think the Chinese are getting better & better, some sommerso pieces I’ve seen from there have been almost perfect! I think it’s the quite garish colours in this piece that unsettle me somewhat. I feel that I (and you) would have seen this person’s work before. Ha ha…it doesn’t matter really and it’s been fun chatting about it to you. ❤️
I would have so grabbed that!
That is thick...thick!
I love it.
OMG, I am So Jealous! That is Spectacular, I want one!
It’s gorgeous no matter what its history!
Stunning !!!
