because, honestly, the U.S. is exhausting. Thoughts? Any advice?
I’m a 31fm who was born in Ghana, came to live in the U.S. about 20 years ago because of my dad, and is now thinking of moving back to Ghana
QuestionDo you have any business in mind to start?? Or you'll settle for our 9-5?
I work in healthcare so it’s more like 9-9 for me and most weekends. All of my money I make goes directly towards my massive student loans and high rent because higher education and housing here are virtually unaffordable for a majority of people. I’m definitely trying to pay off my loans and leave. I can barely save and can’t afford to buy a home. So a 9-5 would be heaven, with rent prices that are not impossible. Like I wouldn’t even know what to do with myself after work. Probably go to the beach lol.
I understand that Ghanaians are absolutely robbed of their wages for the amount of work they do and for the cost of living. It’s not right and your leaders have failed you. But you could say the same about the U.S. I can’t compare the income inequality between here and Ghana 1:1 but extreme income inequality is definitely experienced by a lot of people in both places regardless. It’s just that the U.S. might have a few more social safety nets that are akin to putting a bandage on a burst pipe.
So the goal is to get that remote job first, then move. If I can’t get a remote job in the U.S., or if I do but the time difference is not manageable, I’m thinking of going into the pharmaceutical industry. It’ll be best with my background. I know I will be good at it and I’ll get decent pay and growth. Growth is very important too. Coming from a privileged stand point, I’m also excited to maybe one day have the chance to completely pivot industries. I don’t have specific job titles in mind but I do enjoy the culinary arts, languages, and cinema.
I have a business idea that I know can bring a fresh perspective to Ghana, but tbh I don’t have a lot of business acumen. Business was never a strong suit in the family. So I will slowly work on that and rely on it only when I’m ready.
Don't forget that as a US citizen you will be paying double taxation if you are resident in Ghana.
You say you want to "go into the pharmaceutical industry". What pharmaceutical industry?
They can switch to a 1099 contractor role and pay tax to the IRS only for income in excess of $120k per annum I believe.
