Ok so I’ve started off planning to write a new short novel (usually write gritty crime/horror/macabre stories)

In short my story involves a woman who died and became a ghost and a group of supernatural beings that exist only outside of this ‘plane’.

Her journey is how to find out how to ‘breach purgatory’ and either die forever or come back to life in human form.

I can’t help but thinking a lot of these supernatural stories have cliche or generic tropes, and I’m trying to avoid that any tips?

FYI I’m not writing a vampire love story aimed for teenagers. My characters are adults and I want it to be really gritty and chilling

Best way to avoid the twilight-esque stereotypes?
