Nothing else is damaged. Only this radar and one small turret.
Does somebody know why is this happening?
Why do biters eat radars, rather than anything else in my factory?
DiscussionThat's bullshit biters are mostly conservative and radar emits CNN in 5G wave length.
Biters are mostly communist and the radars are made by Raytheon.
sir a second biter has struck the radar
The wall just got two turrets deeper!
And gamma radiation
Ohhh god please no, don’t let politics come into another beautiful sub a rip it apart from the inside. 🧎♂️➡️🙏
I agree with you in principle but disagree with you in context.
Mocking politics is perfectly fine.
deMOCKracy, anyone?
This 100%, as long we're not discussing ideals but mocking them, we're good.
Now we just need a mod that allows us to use the biters as cheap workforce instead of assemblers, belts, robots and so on. That way we can be the communists for once.
I need this. Biotorio -- no bots, no factory... Just bugs. They mine ore and haul it to furnaces, more bugs haul from there to crafters, etc...
Like... Finally a reason for me to play deathworld!
Boy do I have a surprise for you.
It's not quite what /u/_Wyrm_ asked for, but still!
it's a start and i love it
wild that it's almost two years old
c'mon factorio has great potential for political commentary though, you are outsider looking to exploit alien nature at the cost of its natives where growth is seen as positive value as factory must grow. theres like atleast few politics there
I just roleplay Israeli settler in the west bank
"must increase artillery barrage into the Gaza Biter Strip"
If they didn't want to get eradicated they shouldn't have thrown a few weak biters into my fortified wall forcing my hand.
I'm more of a manifest destiny kind of guy myself.
I would’ve agreed with the person saying “no please don’t bring politics into the sub” if they said it to you lol.
I don’t disagree with you but this actually IS bringing politics in. Somebody is going to argue with you lol
guys don’t let politics infiltrate the game where you kill natives and destroy their land for resources, all for the purpose of killing more natives and destroying more land for resources
It's election season. Politics is going to be inserted into absolutely everything, no matter how obnoxious and forced it is.
You're making it 100000% more obnoxious by treating as commentary. If you really want it to die, don't give it oxygen.
Tinfoil hatery on that level isn't politics, just plain ignorance deserving of mockery imo
Because it's the most annoying thing biters can do.
Without radars, you can't see what is nearby and therefore can't see what the biters are doing. So Radars are tagged as military buildings like turrets, and bugs prioritize them.
Counter argument: the offshore pump that provides water for your only source of power.
I had an early game attack that managed to take out that and 1 pipe, somehow.
i believe the pathing algorithm is to the nearest pollution-emitting entity. however, if they find a military building along the way, they prioritize that first. After that, if an object is blocking their path (defined as having to walk "out of their way" by X amount of blocks), they attack the thing thats blocking them.
so it is likely they were pathing to your boilers, but the path they chose was blocked by the pipe, rather than walk around the lake they attacked the pipe.
there is an option in the f4 debug menu to turn on biter paths; this highlights the path of an incoming attack. it's a bit "cheaty" though, if you care about that sort of thing, because it renders the path and target before the biters reach it so you can react. however it is useful in understanding and debugging their behavior if they keep attacking something weird.
This is why you should always use underground pipes
Now I want a mod that makes biters as annoying as humanly possible.
Don't go attack military targets. Attack random belts and pipes. Attack critical infrastructure. Attack full chests!
Someone teach the biters guerrilla warfare!
Even worse, have them damage random belts, and the damage takes the form of rotating them left or right!
i think we found satan
( I am going to try and make it real :D )
Doesn't the rampant mod teach biters tactics? Maybe check it out there
replacement sound effects: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR3MDSF-IpQ
Turn off specific destruction notifications and make them general. Find out a conveyor section was destroyed when your production turns off
Imagine if power pole wires got disconnected if a biter walks underneath it.
I almost lost my lazy bastard run because the buggers for my water pump
The most annoying thing that doesn't potentially wreck a Lazy Bastard run then.
Bugs are smart, they're going for the factory's eyes.
The microwaves irritate their antennae
I love this explanation but it really bugs me that you said microwaves instead of radar waves, lol
why? doesn't radar work by using microwaves?
Most do.
Literally part of the old story about the Radar Tech and the Chocolate Bar.
The timeless classic of forbidden love.
Some do, some use other wavelengths, so more generically it would be radio waves rather than microwaves.
Feel free to imaging these particular radar operating in whichever range you like :)
Depending on who you ask microwaves are from 1 m to 1 mm (300MHz to 300 GHz), 30 cm to 3mm(1 to 100 GHz) or 30 cm to 0.1mm (1 to 3000 GHz). Radar in different applications are from 30 MHz to ~300 GHz, but in the usual applications is about 1 to 20 GHz.
Technically yes. There is some spillover into the higher frequency radio waves, though. Also to be fair, RADAR is an acronym for RAdio Detection And Ranging
Radars primarily use microwaves, but there are a few radars that use the RF portion of the spectrum instead.
“Radar waves” are not a part of the EM spectrum.
Source: radar engineer (but this is somewhat common knowledge)
Haha... it bugs you out? haha...
I think they are undercover biter
From the official wiki:
The radar will be attacked by enemies that come within very close range, like turrets, due to its status as a military building, but will not attract biters from long range like polluting structures do.
They’re just following The Art of War by Sun Tzu:
“Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.”
I think that was Eminem not Sun Tzu
I would read Eminem's Art of War
Eminem on Deathworld:
Yeah you laugh 'til your motha#$%&ing ass gets blasted
By hordes of more than a thousand bug things rassling
Throw 'nough dirt in the air then these bugs ain't asking
Punch in your walls- like they wrapped in saran wrap wrapping
No more plastic and then you stand back, gasping
$%@&ing assassins hijacking train tracks, crashing
All this terror the terrors de-mand action
Next thing you know, you got em' blowing all-out acid!
Your RADAR dish is gone- your mags are all next to empty
You're just a baby- won't advance in the gray tech tree
You're on a death world better get turrets that shoot beams
At 28, how many tries will it take me?
Crazy insane or insane crazy?
When I say "mortars?", you say "maybe"
Production chain, still has inane waits
I'm in two days late, attacks today? Hang me!
Radars are the tastiest structures
They’re made of rock candy.
One evening as the sun went down
And the smelter fires were burning
Down the track came a biter bitin’
And he said boys, I’m not turning
I’m headed to a land full of smoke and death,
And iron plates beyond countin’
So come with me and you will see
The big radar candy mountain!
In the big radar candy mountain
There’s a land that’s choked with ash
With a thousand tasty structures
On which I plan to gnash
Where the nests are made of steel
And the worms shoot flaming oil
There’s walls and guns to bring us fun
Trains to chew and acid to spew
In the big radar candy mountain
I only regret that I have but one upvote to give for this masterpiece. Well done, fellow engineer; well done indeed.
Omg 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bruh 😂
The beeping sound that radars make? That's not the sound of a radar ping. It's the game censoring the slurs the radar is shouting.
Radars are our eyes, and the luddite bugs would rather keep the whole world blind.
"Now you see me. Soon you won't."
The radar waves feel so tingly on the skin
Information is extremely important in warfare. By denying you information, they can force guesswork into your strategic decision making.
5G
They're shy.
They wan't their privacy
The tutorial actually explains it.
In-game explanation: The ping sent out by the radar annoys them.
Out-game explanation: It's a military tagged building which gets prioritized.
Radars are military structures. Biters hit those first.
They produce high pitch frequencies that bother sensitive creatures.
“And now, a high-pitched sound that only biters can hear: MEE MEEE MEE MEEE MEE”
“You idiot; we can all hear that.”
biter detected
It upsets the biter that bites it. Ah, nature vs tech at its finest.
They can't discern that it isn't part of an artillery shell
The beeping is driving them insane
The biters value their privacy and don’t like nosy parkers.
Imagine your neighbor constantly blasting music. Yes. You would take down their radio first.
Thats why most air guns / pellet guns comes with 4x20 scope 🤷🏼♂️
Or setting up telescopic video cameras straight into your bedroom window
In what tab do you find radars? The military tab. Things in that tab are prioritized by biters. If no military targets exist within a given radius, then they will go after polluting buildings.
In my mind radar throws off a lot of electromatic radiation, just like the trackers and crap on the military equipment. I have a head cannon where the biters work like beavers and attack the noisiest thing they can find even if that's bad for them.
(AFAIK; beavers will move to an area because certain plants live there, then, they'll build dams because they have super sensitive hearing and don't like the sounds of running water)
I don't imagine the power generation equipment would need to beam out as many electromagnetic waves as the detectors on the radar and the turrets. Well you could just say "no it's for gameplay balance" I like the idea of it being grounded in some weird logic
They are delicious
Privacy is paramount in their society.
Biters prioritize Immediate defense > general military in detection range > a pollution source in detection range. From what I understand groups in the wild will not attack other structures so long stretches of rail and power poles are generally safe, unless they are in the middle of a base for which a discrete attack group was specifically dispatched in response to the spawners being in range of a pollution cloud. I'm not overly familiar with the exact biter mechanics I could be wrong though.
Immediate defense > general military in detection range > a pollution source in detection range
My understanding was that biters actually prioritise high energy buildings and not pollution sources, and that pollution only serves as a target to path towards; this would cause them to attack radars are somewhat high-energy at 300kW which is why they tend to be targeted over electric miners at 90kW and burner miners at 150kW, but only after actual military targets are gone.
This also explains why biters attack lone turrets but not solar radar outposts (unless they can't path around it or want a nest there).
I actually want to go double-check this in a few hours when I'm able to, as I'm both not sure if biters consider radars military (despite where it is in crafting) and if biters actually do prioritise polluters or high-energy buildings. Should be easy to test, an electric miner is 90kW and 10/m whereas an electric furnace is 180kW and 1/m.
Well, remember we are the bad guys here (Yes, its true) and they are actually pretty smart - so its a targeted strike on the evil dude that invaded their home world and is killing all their population.
Noisy
Biters will attack nearby military structures, and the radar is considered one. Otherwise they only attack their target, which can be a source of damage or pollution, or buildings they bump into.
I always thought they attack the most moving thing first
The radars annoy the shit out of biters then I believe they go for the weapons that are hurting them then the highest polluters
Looks like you're new in the game and starting your base, so I just wanted to tell you good luck!
Hint: factory must grow.
The taste
When bitters are triggered by pollution they target they buildings that produce pollution but if they find any military building in the way they target that instead, they don't inherently target things like electric poles, rails or belts, they only eat those if they are on the way (in the case of poles or if they're eating something else and that thing nearby.
The spin of the radar creates airflow disturbance that the little biter hairs pick up on
I think of ot like the frequency is piercing to them.
That and strategy, if up can't see me you can't stop me.
because radars make the most pollution
they don't generate pollution...
5G bro
Don't worry, just vandalize the nearest 4G tower and it'll stop.
Radio frequency pollution perhaps.
Oh I thought all energy consumption created pollution.
they use 300kw therefore make the most pollution
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..........
A boiler can power 2 steam engines full time for a total of 1800kW. A boiler running at full power produces 30 pollution per minute. That means running a radar with boiler power produces a total of 5 pollution/m plus whatever trivial stuff comes from actually producing fuel.
And burner drills, electric drills, pumpjacks, and oil refineries all produce more pollution than that regardless of their power needs. All assemblers, chem plants, and centrifuges also produce more than 5 pollution/minute when powered by boilers. But yeah, some of these can get lower if they use efficiency modules.
But also, if the biters are targeting pollution producers, I'm pretty sure they're going for the things that directly produce it. In the case of radars, that'd be boilers.
Babe new factorio pollution analysis just dropped
Along what others have said about them being military devices in the game ecosystem I think it's also something to do with the power they consume. They use a considerable amount of power.
Radar is tagged as a military building and the bugs prioritize those.
