ELI5 Trying hard to understand this quota. Help me please!
MathematicsIt’s because they are doing their accounting per week. So depending on which day they consider the end of the week, most months will have 4 weeks, but some will have 5. Take 2024 as an example. If they considered the end of the week on a Monday, then in April, they would have had 5 weeks, ending on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th. And then in May, they would have had just 4 weeks, ending on the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th. But had the weeks ended on Friday, it would have been the opposite this year with April having 4 weeks and May having 5 weeks. Had they said the week ended on Saturday or Sunday, they would have had 4 weeks in both April and May.
I'm bad at math but perhaps, as it's counted up weekly perhaps may started on the 1st a Sunday, and so the last week was not yet finished before the turn of the month, and so the sales earnings were not reported until the end of the week/the next month and in turn appeared less.
Depends on how you define week/which week is which month. If you consider a week not any 7 days but monday to Sunday and assign the week to the month that the monday is in April this year would have 5 weeks while May has just 4.
If you go here which is a source cited in your original link, you can see the full article which this quote is sourced from and see the answer. It has to do with the days of the week not being uniform across months, and hotel business being higher on certain days of the week.
He didn't say sales were exactly $10,000 per week, but rather the hotel did around $10,000 a week in business.
Many hotels can make substantially more money on weekend days (e.g., Friday to Sunday) than for weekdays (e.g., Monday to Thursday). Higher room rates, more food & beverage sales, hosting weddings and other special events, etc. Sometimes the average weekend revenue can be 50% more or even 100% more (double) vs. the weekday revenue.
But with the current calendar system, in some years April will can more weekend days than May.
For example, last year April had 14 out of 30 days being Friday-Sunday (47%) while May only had 12 out of 31 days (39%).
Lets say a hotel in April averaged $1000 per day on weekdays and $2000 on weekends. And in May they averaged $1010 on weekdays and $2010 on weekends.
If we work out the math, the hotel made $44,000 in April but only $43,310 in May, even though in May the hotel made more revenue both on weekdays and on weekends on average and May has an extra day. But because April had more weekend days, the total revenue was higher in April than in May.
