Newbie seeking guidance

Question

Hey everyone.

Im just getting into this. I’ve messed around w a couple instruments but I’m definieitly not a musician. I’m an artist and i like to experiment with diff types of mediums.

Lately ive been playing around w logic loops. I have no problem building/layering the intros but as soon as I have to take the next step i freeze. I have no idea how to do it.

I need help w this. Is this called song structure? I have no idea. Im looking for a structure template i can work off of, or a video series that can teach me how to produce a song.

My knowledge in logic is minimal as well. I have a keyboard and logic but thats all i need rt now. I really just want to learn how to make songs with loops- if i need to create some raw sounds so be it.

Any advice? I enjoy learning and i enjoy learning as i go, as in learning while im trying to make a song. Thanks for your help in advance.

Also, im not opposed to paying for lessons. Any ideas? It would be cool to do that in person though. Im in NY.

PS. I was fooling around making a remix of a john legend song but it randomly deleted off logic. I would love to continue were i left off but i have no idea what instrument this is. Maybe its a type of synth? Anyone know? Or is there a way i can find out? song

Does bound to divide only work off of ableton?

yes but just watch it, it really doesnt matter. Just to get the hang of the production process. The Ableton specifics aren't that important.

Yeah learn about arrangement (song structure).

A good way to do this is draggin some of your favorite songs that inspire you into the daw and chopping them up by sections. Intro, verse, chorus, etc. Listen to whats changing. Are the drums coming in or changing. Is there a new element being introduced, is the chord progression changing. Is there a build in tension in a section thats telling you somethings coming.

Then, listen to how their achieving this. Is there sweeps, fx, fills of any kind breaking up the flow to tell you something bout to change. Is there a new melody that comes in early before the next section that introduces a new change into the next section. The possibilities are endless and arrangement is one if the funnest, hardest and important things to get good at to make a song flow throughout.

Then once you have it all sliced up by section. Use this as a foundation to build your own track around in the same project. Does this section have chords, cool make a chord progression or add a chordal loop. Does it have bass, add one. And on and on throughout the song

I wish I did this more when I first started as I would of saved alot of time not trying to make stuff with 6 different sections one after the other that dont make sense lol.

Keep it simple at first and mimmick arrangements you like

Take a pen, or I guess today open up notes on your phone, listen to the style of track you want to make and take notes of all the structure changes. Remember everything is in 4's, 8, 16, 32... typically, but it's music, do what sounds good to you and you might discover something new.

Don't start by making intros.

Make interesting musical ideas that would be the equivalent of the chorus or verse of the song. As an 8 bar loop.

And then you'll move to stretching it to a full song like described here

There are also a lot of YouTube videos about how to break out of the eight bar loop. Once you create a good 8 bar loop with all the instruments in it, then watch some of them. And around this stage, you should be analyzing some of your favorite songs in your genre and noticing how they are doing it.

These methods don't work so good when you're just trying to write the intro as the starting point.
