Patching ceiling drywall (question)

So this just appeared in my house. I don't really have finances to do more than a patch job. A weird thing I'm noticing: should there be some form of joist or framing around the brick (pic 1)? I am surprised that the drywall was just flush against the brick.

Any other tips for someone that has not done this before? I watched a few YouTube videos, but any other advice would be great.

What do you mean “it appeared”. Something had to cause it (an animal or downward pressure). You are correct that there should be a nailer along the brick. Recommend taking it down along the entire brick side (assuming there is no nailer at all) and tapcon in a nailer and rehang.

I'm thinking a squirrel, and the fact that there was no nailer probably allowed for it to happen

Easy fix. Cut out around it Put a new piece of drywall to fit u have to put a piece of wood so u have something to tie iI it to. Drywall tape with mud (thin coat to hide lines (base coat), light sand. Then ure finish coat so it’s even, Sand till smooth. Prime then paint. Don’t paint until u are happy with the smoothness
