If it’s an outdoor mall strip, I usually track along the back of the parking lot and pull up to find a spot, as opposed to driving between the stores and parking lot, then grabbing the closest available spot. Doing this greatly reduces my chance of hitting a pedestrian. Before someone tells me to just pay attention- I can’t predict when an inattentive parent is going to let their child or dog dart out in front of my car.
I also do this because I don’t park in the very front of the parking lot. Middle or back of the lot for me. Im not snooty about my vehicle, but it’s something easy I can do to prevent damaging my own property, and more importantly someone else’s. A few extra steps wont kill me.
You can try using a gps to navigate, but I find that most shopping centers are too tightly packed for the gps to be useful. Watch other cars driving in and out to gain a better understanding of what to do.
Oh, and don’t cut across the parking lot. Just follow the lines, it’s only a few seconds longer. Cutting across is harmless and doesn’t impact anyone until it does. Someone almost hit me doing that shit the other day.
Good luck! Be calm, keep your head on straight and you’ll be fine.
I also do this but because I prioritize getting out of my car as quick as possible instead of trying to park as close as possible.
