Anybody else think the 5 minute wait is excessive? Last night hand it to me order didn't answer phone or text. It's about 1130 pm and I'm just standing awkwardly in front of this random house waiting for the timer to run out.
I would just take a photo and text it to them letting them know where the food was dropped off.
What actually happens if you don’t wait after messaging and calling, just take a photo, send it in a message, screenshot that message, and leave without waiting for five minutes. Will that backfire on us? Because if customer support gets involved, they’ll see a timestamp on the photo and that you didn’t wait? I sound like I’m getting too detailed, but I’m curious.
I just leave it at the door and select complete, i take a picture with my camera app on my phone and leave, aint no way im waiting for them smh
What's the 5 minute wait thing ? The only thing that shows up when I'm going to deliver is "don't forget the drinks" or " don't forget the deserts". Other than that it's a deliver at the door or handed it to customer option. So I'm confused ?
On hand it to me orders you can either confirm drop off and you get cannot hand order to customer and if you click that a 5 minute timer begins. They then want you to call or text customer then wait out the 5 minute timer before setting the food by the door and taking a picture like you would on a leave at the door order. It will not even allow you to take a Pic before the 5 minutes is up. So this only applies to hand it to me orders where the customer isn't actually available for you to hand it to them.
Select handed to the customer and leave it by the door aint nobody got time for that shit.
I live in Baltimore and there are a lot of places in the city I would not want to b standing around with a bag of food and a phone in at 1130 at night
You ain't lying
Why stand outside instead of waiting in car?
Former Uber driver here.
One night I was waiting for the app to give me a ride. I was sitting on a side street half a mile from my house.
Suddenly someone rapped at my window. I rolled down my window and they are demanding to know why I'm sitting outside their house. I told them and they said move or ill call police.
I was so startled and pissed I left. But immediately wished I tore that person a new asshole.
Imagine you were standing at someone's doorstep next door to THIS GUY for 5 minutes. He'd probably shoot you.
So yea, I'm with you here.
Just call support a told them the customer didn’t come out and someone knock your window and threatened you so you feel unsafe. Get paid and Enjoy your food 🤤
People that think the street in front of their house is theirs piss me off. I would have signed off and spent the night there... My mom's neighbor called the cops because my car was parked there for days while I was visiting all that happened is they contacted me and asked if it was abandoned and I said no and it was the end of it. I left it there the rest of the week.
My last city had a law that you could only park for 24 hours or be subject to towing. People used to park in front of my house, blocking my driveway, and I had no idea who they were. They'd go to houses blocks away and leave their cars for days.
Depends on the neighborhood of if cars should be on the street or not...
It is kind of sketchy to have a car parked outside your house(in the literal sense of the term) I'd be "curious"
TBH I was hella pissed. Couldn't even park in front of my own house, paying property tax on a double lot, because my town was so overpopulated, even my 4 house block was balls to the wall parking packed.
In the greater scheme of things, 5 minutes is not excessive. Hey, life happens. UberEats is 8 minutes.
Depends on your market I think. I live in Nola so 5 minutes is enough time for some pretty otherworldly and dangerous shit to go down.
Yikes! That consideration never occurred to me...
I used to wait. Now, it’s just, “handed order directly to customer” and we are back on the road! If you don’t answer your door within 2-3 minutes…I assume you’re not home/incapacitated.
so door take away the worry free unassign on certain orders ! has anyone experienced this aswell?
Has to be after 10 minute wait and you have to be within like 250 ft of the red pin on the map. Even if the restaurant is nearby you have to be at the pin
Very excessive to be standing at someone's door. Its sus..
When you're delivering DOORdash where would you think someone would be standing to deliver it?
I'm not waiting 5 mins for nobody, that's ridiculous. They know your coming. I used to drive school buses and we only had to wait two mins for kids to arrive on time and then we could leave. So tell me why I hv to wait five for an adult. Our time is money and I'm not letting anyone take that from me. Your not at that door in one minute, it's being put in front of your door.
And FUCK dashers like you that put them in front of doors. I have specific instructions for contactless to knock on a specific window as I am the only person in the building but the window is about 5 feet from me.
though some do knock on the window, I can’t count the number of times I’ve gone to the door to open it and had the door crush drinks and tear the packaging and food to hell because they didn’t knock on the window and left it IN FRONT of an outward opening door.
I wasn't saying put in front of door in a shitty way, just in that area of the front door. And I was talking about waiting for people to come to the door because they want it handed to them and they take forever to get to the door and not one of them I've ever encountered had a disability or was on the phone, etc. Just people who can't respect our time and they know they ordered food. Why not just change it to leave at my door. Especially if it's a house. TIME IS MONEY FOR US! I'm tired of it being disrespected.
Sometimes the app will mess up texts. I had one customer trying to text me and I'm trying to text them and we were in the same area. I turned on the 5 minute notification then she walked up to me and asked my name and we started going over each other's texts. The app kept telling the customer that I was 5 minutes away while I'm sitting in my car in front of her. Smh.
You can wait 5 short minutes lmfao
Time is money. Also customers gets a notification on their phone when the driver is on the way so there is absolutely no reason at all for us to have to wait.
- 5 mins isnt short when you are waiting for something
- Time is money
- You are not mf royalty so have your ass ready.
What do I do with my hands? And do I stand still? Sit on the porch? Or just pace back and forth lmao.
Just sittitng there like
Lmao for real tho!
Love on time order's. Please make me money
Lol. Uber eats is 8 minutes and half the time it doesn't give me the option to take the picture to end the order properly u til 10 to 12.
I could just end it myself without ha ding it to someone but I want to give 0 excuses to get deactivated plus I'm California so if they want to pay me for that extra 10 MI uses, go head.
Unless on earn by time, and non-alcohol, orders, no need to even use a timer. Especially if it has leave at door hand to me in the drop off notes. What you do is when you arrive is text them something like, hey, here with your order, would you like the order left at the door or handed to you? Let me know either way. If they don't send anything back in a reasonable time, I place the order, take a picture, say hey, no response, so I left it at the door. Here is the picture of where I left it. If on earn by time, use that 5 minutes. And alcohol deliveries.
Sometimes the app doesn't register when you click on text or call button
That is the most annoying shit ever. Literally called them and spoke to them, and it makes me press that again. Smh my head
I usually text the person say, hey here is where I placed your order, sent in app. And usually they get it as I am going to the car, or in the car, about to pull out. And I always say hand to customer, I don't start the timer unless it's an alcohol order, or a specified hand to me.
Nope not when the pay is good.
Pay was good. Just awkward in my opinion it takes not even a minute to contact the customer im supposed to just stand there for 4 whole minutes lol. Most are just waiting for you 2 leave and should request leave at the door.
Contact the customer? I never do that. They can see I'm waiting and when I picked up the order, why contact them?
I never do the timer. I ring the bell, wait for at most a minute (lol) and then I take a pic of the food at their door w my phone, send it over the dd app or text. Send them a “dropped your order off, have a good one” text along w the pic and leave. Never had any complaints/violations.
Tbh from the customer's end I don't think they even understand what no contact delivery is. I'm pretty sure they pick it thinking it's the equivalent of "leave at my door / DON'T hand it to me". So as far as I'm concerned, I'm doing what they asked.
It literally is I don’t think you understand what no contact delivery is
So why do I get two different prompts for "leave at my door" vs "no contact delivery"? I'm not waiting for a timer. I'm placing it at their door, taking a picture and sending it to them via chat, and then marking it as "handed to customer" so I can move on. Unless it's like at a building and not a home, I'm not calling you to ask where you want it.
Buddy look up what no contact delivery is how tf would it be no contact delivery if you had to hand it to the customer that would indeed be contact delivery
Clearly... I'm not actually handing it to them. I'm placing it at their door, taking a picture of it at the door, and sending the picture to them, and THEN clicking the button that says I handed it to them. You can click "handed it to the customer" before the five minutes are up. All of which is probably exactly what they wanted to happen in the first place, because they likely don't know the distinction between "put at my door" and "no contact delivery".
Maybe actually read what I'm typing before coming at my throat?
So explain to me the difference between leave at my door and contactless delivery
Do you even doordash? Or are you a customer in here just trying to give drivers shit? If so that would make a lot more sense. Nonetheless, I'll answer your question as if you've never driven for doordash before.
The difference is that when you select "Leave at my door", a dasher can just walk up to your door, place the food, snap a picture, and run. "Contactless delivery" requires you to call or text the customer and wait for five minutes before being able to mark it as having been placed at their door, for whatever stupid reason. But, you can mark the order as having been handed to the customer (EVEN THOUGH YOU DIDN'T HAND IT TO THEM) and just text the customer a picture of the food at their door to cover your own ass in case they try to lie about not having the food delivered to them, bypassing the five minute timer.
Ultimately, I don't think customers know the difference as any time I do call them they always seem aggravated that I'm calling or texting them at all. My guess is that either the name "no contact" delivery is confusing to these customers thinking it should mean that they don't get contacted (called, texted, or spoken to in-person) when it's actually the opposite. Or, they just don't know the difference between "leave at my door" and "contactless delivery" thinking it's the exact same.
Now that I've typed out a novel for you, do you finally understand what I've been saying for the last 3 messages? Because this is just one big rewording of what I've been saying since the beginning.
I think the difference is which app they ordered on. I think the "contactless delivery" is when the customer orders thru the merchants website/app.
Very good point. In that case I care even less. You get it dropped at the door. Ain't nobody got time for that.
Did you really just start an argument with someone to arrive at the same conclusion they did in the first comment that you replied to? Dense.
Bruh nobody gives a fuck about drivers. The company doesn’t the customer doesn’t. Nobody cares if you have to wait and if you’re wasting time not getting paid. Source: trust me bro
I have thousands of dashes under my belt and have no contradictions to your statement lol.
Yea I deliver for a pharmacy it’s the same all over the board.
yep i definitely take issue with
Just leave it if no one answers within a minute or 2 minutes
If it's a house and not a long walk/flight of stairs at an apartment, I straight up just go sit in my car with the food until they come out or the timer is up.
I had the urge to go wait in my car as well and probably would have had i not parked a few houses away.
That’s when you get in your vehicle and call support!
Yes. I've had to stand on a very sketchy Motel 6 balcony at 11pm during a snow storm waiting for someone to come to the door. I left it and took the picture just to have it reported as not received
i hope you disputed that
It was Ubereats, they don't tell you which order claimed it wasn't delivered. But I had sent repeated messages thru the app and took a picture with the room number the directions indicated. So not much else I could do. But I don't leave orders anymore. I always say there is no safe place to leave it.
Especially late at night. I don’t want to leave my car for most late orders, much less stand around on a cold dark porch.
I figure they ordered it, they know it’s coming, so wtf
Yea I some how got the neighbors attention but not the person ordering. The neighbor was staring me down in the window until I pointed to my bag.
Uber Eats is 8:00, I'm pretty sure.
That’s correct. 8 mins.
Jesus Christ why so long? The 5min wait for doordash already feels way longer than necessary. Uber Eats is taking the piss.
It’s 10 minutes for IC! I hate it. Especially when it’s a small, close-to-the-store order I took under the assumption I’d be able to complete it in half an hour or less.
What I’m hearing is InstaCart is actively punishing drivers who follow the rules. That’s horrible.
Total BS asking us to wait 5 minutes. It we text call and knock no response then DD should all us the leave food, we shouldn’t have to wait or chase anyone at a school, workplace or hospital. Customer ordered food they should be looking for us to deliver THIER food
Exactly. Don't wait longer than 60 second. Ever. It's ridiculous. Take some responsibility for your food because I have just driven it to your doorstep.
Not even getting into the fact that you start treading in some very strange waters of being a random person lingering outside a house in a neighborhood you don't live in. Anything over 60 seconds is creepy and to the neighbors you look exactly the same as a burglar casing a house.
Or a random 34 year old on a scooter at your old high school. Inadvertent creep factor goes up exponentially.
I took the advice I got off of hear. I text your order is here & then hit that timer. They know they ordered DD & they know they can track you. There’s no excuse.
You know, this is likely not the wisest decision, but I usually just call twice, and then just take a picture, leave at door or the most obvious place and continue on. Never gotten a ding for it.
It used to be 10 min lol be glad it’s only 5 now
Yeah 5 minutes is crazy lol
My Uber only wants to wait 2 mins. And charges me extra. Where’s the upcharge button? LOl
Yes, especially when you are in sketchy areas.. and have to stand there waiting.
Of course! With respect to my fellow drivers, sometimes I'm surprised by how much they bend over backwards for people. This is why they take advantage us!
I NEVER wait, "meet at the door" is a verb requiring 2 parties. You didn't keep your word, i did my part, i'm at the door. "Hand it me" implies I knock at the door and you open it.
I NEVER wait and NEVER get dinged for it. I imagine most reasonable human beings understand that we're not going to stand outside their door for an extended period of time.
The only reason it is excessive is because we are doing it for free.
DD should give us $2 if the timer hits 5 min.
This is one way to solve the issue and incentivise us drivers to actually wait. I wouldn’t mind waiting so long if I was getting paid for it.
It’s still pretty awkward standing there for the entire 5mins tho.
Not when I'm doing earn by time. Door dash wants to give me an extra $1.25 to just stand there, hey, it's their profit taking the hit.
I used to, until I found out how prop 22 works. Now I don’t care. I get paid for that 5 min also. Take the pic and walk away. Every state should be like prop 22. It can work both ways.
I’d kill for that in Nevada
Yes it’s excessive - if you just put an order in there’s no reason to not be ready. I swear people who do “hand it to me” order then throw their phone across the room.
blows my mind everytime I arrive at a place with no visible house number and all the lights are off, like cmon if Im hungry im laying down road flares in my driveway with a big cartoon sign pointing at my place. waiting for your food with all the lights off including the porch light always weirds me out
I had a shop and deliver other night. Delivery house was completely dark, including living room. No visible number. Had to check houses on both sides just to make sure I was there, since customer wasn’t answering my call to request they turn on a light. Their driveway was at an angle but full of cars, and I could discern some cracks. I had a case of water that was “leave at my door” BS and I was afraid of tripping (can’t hold phone light and a case of 35 fricken waters).
They finally responded to a text, said they had no outside lights. I asked them to at least open the door and let the hall light illuminate the way. They opened door and only had glowy neon lights in the background. I told them they could come down and carry the water from my car or follow me with their phone light. 😤
Always start the timer no matter what.
At store: timer starts is to improve their delivery time via DD At home: improved the customer DD response. At worst you keep their order or return to store for higher earnings
The only issue to rule out is theft at the store, which can throw others off but is typically easy to address.
Yes. If I have hand it to me, I’m hitting “can’t hand to customer” as soon as I roll up, no matter what.
oh that's a good tip to keep in my back pocket. thanks.
That is a lot. I have to agree with others - start the timer asap. I don’t always realize a timer applies - but when i realize it does that is why i do.
One time i had a timer run out and i had called and texted repeatedly. It was to an apartment building so i left the order near the buzzer. I followed all the steps to a t, sent photos, text left voice mails etc…. Later the older woman called me crying because she had not gotten her order. She acknowledged my texts and voice mails and that i had tried to contact her. I still felt terrible. I’m in this for extra cash - not to make old ladies cry. There was nothing i could do. I was so glad i had followed the steps. I could not wait for her for hours to answer the phone. She just did not appear to be with it technicly. So going forward - if i have to leave behind an order for someone who just won’t answer the phone - i always use the timer and text and call. Gives me a clear conscience and support can follow the trail.
I swear nine times out of ten it’s an ungrateful piece of shit but then you get that little old crying lady and you feel like absolute human trash
5 minute wait at the restaurant and house are both excessive.
Always start the timer as soon as you're close enough to lower the time. Uber is worse as they are 8 minutes
how do you start the timer?
One thing to consider is that Wendy's and probably other places that use their own apps but have DD deliver don't have the option to leave at the door inside the app
So people who just want a drop off are forced to use hand offs so they just wait for you to go as they don't want a hand off
Sounds silly but you can bet it happens
so what do you do in those situations?
Yeah, just went through the Wendy's app and saw that there's no selection for contactless delivery or anything like that. You can leave instructions though. Stupid. As a side note the three tip options were for $1, $2, $3. For a order that is $15 from a Wendy's that's 4 miles away. STUPID.
You can't do a custom tip??
Yes, I meant those were the suggested tips then you could write one in.
You can so a custom tip with no issues
Consider the customer viewpoint though. You have the suggested tips right there and you don't have to do any math, or you can do custom tip and have to type the numbers in or if you want to tip the standard 15% the app doesn't do the math for you. It's easier to just hit that suggested tip button and move on. Is it right? No. But I would say it's not entirely on the customer at that point. If dash would include a 15/20/25% recommended tip button and keep the custom for people who want to leave a tip but can't afford a full 15%, I feel like it would play out better for both driver and customer.
Would 4 minutes be better? Lmaooo like wtf?
It shouldn’t take anyone 4, 3 or 2 mins to answer a door. 🙄
It would be a 20% improvement, yes.
1500+ deliveries and I've never done it. If they aren't available I put it on the ground and they get message with that photo and I move along. Never had a CV or issue at all. Nobody who is trying to make money has time to wait around for 5 minutes.
This. If they aren't at the door in 30 seconds then they aren't coming. 80% of customers who pick hand at door actually want you to leave at door or they are scamming for free food but nothing you can do about that. Take a picture send through chat it's the perfect way to get out quick and have evidence that the food was delivered
The really smart ones have disabled the chat.
that explains why i haven't been able to text some of these people.
Depends how much you’re getting paid for the order. My goal is net $20 an hour so I don’t accept any offer that’ll make me less than that. Given a 10 minute wait.
Delivery customer and driver here. Point blank…if you order…be ready, period. Your ordering delivery you know will be arriving shortly…don’t start some other BS where you won’t be able to be handed as you processed the order for. Drivers can have orders waiting for next stops or otherwise. Can’t say how many times I’ve had waits or someone didn’t answer the door and I lost an offer from another platform. Even more irritating when it’s a better offer then the one your currently working on. Personally I hate that 5min timer. Customer paid for the ability to track and monitor the driver while on route. If they chose not to…that’s on them. That’s why they paid a delivery fee. To locate, navigate and track their driver.
I never hand it to the customer unless they're standing there waiting for me, if not I always just knock and leave it.
I did that once and got slammed with a CV for “order reported never arrived” so there’s truly no winning sometimes
Same, I'll knock, take a photo and send a text saying "I knocked but I must have caught you in the bathroom."
hmm that's a good idea actually imma start doing that
Two minutes is the longest I'll wait. If the customer doesn't answer, I just text them a photo of the order at their door and leave. If it gets stolen by a neighborhood brat, eaten by animals or infested with bugs, not my goddamn problem.
Watch your fucking app if you want me to hand the order to you. Otherwise, get fucked. Time is money, I either have another order waiting to be delivered on a stacked assignment or I need to be available for the next order.
I love customers like you, ready at the door for the hand to me orders. Makes my job so much easier.
The ones that piss me off the most are the ones that select the "hand to me" option adds the text under it saying "leave on my porch" or whatever nonsense. How the fuck can you be too lazy or dense to select the option of "leave at door" instead?
I always take a photo and text it directly to these type of idiots, just in case they try to lie that it never got delivered. In the rare case there isn't an option to text the customer, I ring the doorbell or knock until they come to the door.
Sure, they're pissed but I show them the instructions on my phone, and tell them to pick the leave at the door option next time. That shuts them right up. I'm not going to get a CV because of the stupidity of a customer. And I can be passively-aggressive petty.
I'm an introvert, but I'm not socially anxious so I do genuinely enjoy the interaction of handing orders directly to customers. It's just nice to see them genuinely happy to get their food. I especially love it when the customer walks up to meet me halfway, because their smiles brighten my day.
I guess that some dashers don't mind interacting with random strangers for just a minute or two, and there are others that just fold right up at the moment you say "hello". That's okay, because they prefer not to be around other people most of the time.
They probably subtly appreciate your effort to save them time, despite their discomfort. Especially if you tipped them very generously. An even better plus is when we get to meet customers' extra friendly or chill pets.
At the end of the day, it's all good. Everyone's happy, you got your food hot and the dasher got a nice payout. So no, you aren't being weird when you're at the door or on the driveway/sidewalk, ready to get your order handed to you.
DISCLAIMER:
I obviously don't mean ALL dashers. There are assholes in every bunch, and Doordash drivers are no different.
My point is that there are us dashers out there that actually enjoy some aspects of our job, despite how we're mistreated and under-compensated by Doordash, and sometimes by customers in extension.
We're just trying to get by, and we're genuinely trying our best to treat the customers fairly. But we would certainly go the extra distance for these awesome customers who show that they care about us.
Doesn't really bother me with prop 22 pay. Especially since it has been dead... Want me to wait 10 minutes for the order to be ready? OK, want me to wait 10 minutes to hand off? OK. Not like any other offers are coming through on the other apps.
I know exactly what you mean. I’ll even wait an extra 10 min in the car before I pick up an order, just to stay active. Now I’m lucky if I get 3 hours active during an 8 hour dash. It’s not that I’m rejecting orders, they’re just not coming In.
YUP, the only times i would feel like a drop and go is probably between 1130am-1230pm or 630p-830p. The rest, i'm just going to milk the clock due to merchant/customer wait.
I give them about 2 minutes in case they needed to get dressed or something like that I'll knock/ ring once or twice then try calling. Then leave at door
For hand it to me, I start the countdown the second I arrive. And I wait in my car until I see someone.
See as a DD driver & customer, if I say hand it to me, pls do what I request. Some of us live in areas where people will steal ya food if they see it. But I can also understand, if customers isn’t communicating, baby I ain’t tryna wait. Time waits for no man, boo. 😂
Text that you left it at the door and leave. I’ve probably done this 500+ times. Like the other guys said, you get like 10 seconds to get to the door
I give them about 10 seconds and then leave
It's not a random house. It's your customer's house.
Your customer who didn't give a crap about the food he ordered.
I never wait. Hand it to me or not. I drop at door and send them the picture. Don't waste ur time.
I start the timer as soon as I arrive.
IDK with DD but with UEats
I take a pic, ..
drive back to my busy area
when the timer expires I post the pic and mark it delvered...and get paid
Got banned for that on DD
Take the picture, text it to the customer, press handed order to customer. You could end up with a CV, but I never have and you’re ok with a few of those every hundred orders anyway.
Never wait for hand it to me. I take a photo and ring the doorbell.
I never wait more than a minute or two if I don't get any response or signs of life from the customer on hand it to me orders. I just treat it like a leave at door at that point, take a pic, send it in a message then bounce.
Funny how 2 people said exactly what you said and had +2 upvotes each, yet yours was at -1.
🤯 Reddit is a wild ride, man.
Eh, I don't really care much about upvotes, it's all good. I've learned that most of the drivers here just look at the job differently than I do and that's fine. I honestly can't remember the last time I actually had to wait for a customer like this anyway, definitely when I first started and didn't know any better. I simply don't take no/low tip orders and people who tip well generally don't fuck around playing games, they're ready and waiting.

Idk i think they purposely do that to lie and try to get free food. Because if there is no pic n all idk Ill knock no answer I call number no answer I text no answer Take pic send in message showing their order at front door No answer I've had most of my I didn't receive the order lies from those people. I Always take pics Typical non tipping Lying pieces of garbage
