What would you be feeding these cory fry? I bought brine shrimp but don’t have a small enough heater to hatch them :/
[Questions|Advice] Breeding | Eggs | FryHi! I've got an air stone, I separate the cory eggs when they're laid and keep them in the dark, temp is about 73-74F. They're in a hatchery net with two air stones on either side. But I don't think it's enough and I keep trying. I've tried methylene blue and the alder cones people have suggested and have no luck. They turn light brown so I think they're fertilized but they still get the mold.
Your salt water treatment - are you putting the eggs in that water? Is it a separate tank? Can you share what your air stone setup looks like that allows them to tumble so well? Please as advised, I've tried so many methods and nothing has worked.
Oh I’m talking about baby brine shrimp in this comment lmao
Ah, I was hoping you had more information!
Ohh no sorry, I’m retarded when it comes to breeding care. I’ve stuck to plants most my life lol
Lol! No worries, thank you for your honesty!
i personally just get one of those mesh breeder baskets that hang inside of the tank and leave them in there! be sure to check on it everyday to make sure no eggs r sticking to one another, and that you remove any eggs that are starting to get fuzzy!
Thank you! This is exactly what I am doing at the moment, with the air stone on the side of the basket that the eggs are stuck to. I separated the eggs from one another. Fingers crossed!
I've seen people put the container they're using to hatch in their aquarium.
yup this is what i was thinking too. I’ve seen plenty of people attach the container at the edge of the tank to avoid the water mixing but to also heat up the container
Frozen daphnia
You can feed them egg yolk but that always made a huge mess for me, so I use some Cory food I already had that dissolves pretty quick and then I recently got some food specifically made for food. You can always take your current food and grind it up and then swirl it into the water
I got this heater and use it in a Voss water bottle with an airstone to hatch BBS and it does great!
I used a lamp with an incandescent lightbulb to supply heat to an inverted 1L plastic bottle with an air stone and it worked well. Hikari also sells their “First Bites” food which is like a fine powder and is great for fry
Crush up flakes, pellets & other dry foods into powder. Also, frozen daphnia or frozen baby brine works well also. Lastly, repashy gel food is another food small enough for most fry. You have to prepare it but it’s excellent quality and readily consumed by all fishy critters.
I've seen people just use a small LED light, kinda like those clip on reading lights, shining on the BBS container.
I actually started mine with powdered food! I have no access to BBS or a hatchery. Out of the 6 fry I have, I ended up with three (now 2 due to a freak accident) very voracious, healthy eaters that can now eat bits of bloodworms and adult brine shrimp!
BBS is such an important food for fry. I use a dish style hatchery. Link. It is by far the best for me because there are no unhatched eggs or shells to foul the tank or choke a baby fish. You don't need to heat the water, but I have found that if I place it on top of a radiator (has an insulated cover) in the winter, the eggs hatch overnight. You could also put a light bulb near it.
that fry already looks pretty big so he's been finding food well enough :) they often will eat microfauna on your plants or finely crumbled fish food. food gel is also amazing and accepted by everyone
I just use Bug Bites for Bottomfeeders ground up in a mortar and pestle so it’s powdery :)
I have fry that I didn’t know were in my tank. I feed Fluval bug bite flakes crushed really small, frozen baby brine shrimp, I tank a floating plant and dip it in spirulina powder and I feed bug bites and other frozen foods. I had no clue I had baby’s so I never saw them until they got big enough to hang with their family. So I think you can feed fry food or use what I did. Mine are strong and healthy. They can swim through a 6 inch airstone no issue. Yours is much larger than any of mine. Mine seem to be growing and as soon as they look like a fish like yours they swim around with the others and eat what they do.
not exactly your question, but petsmart and probably petco sell very small heaters for 1-2 gallon tanks
BBS-Baby Brine Shrimp
BBL-Drizzy
Hey there! I have success hatching BBS in my 65-78 degree home. Sure they take longer to hatch and won’t have the advertised hatch rate but as long your hatchery separates the eggs from BBS ur gtg.
Oh also, use an air stone!! This is way more important than a heater. The air bubbles tumble the eggs keeping them suspended thus noticeably increase your yields.
Tip: How I make my solution. This is just using what I have around the house and they hatch, DYOR.
-1 Quart of water
-2 Tablespoons non-ionized salt (I use kosher salt)
-Treat water with dechlorinator
-Test PH and adjust to over 8 (baking sodium raises PH)
-Mix till homogenized and test for PH
