Climate change is bringing earlier springs, but it's wreaking havoc on animals
ClimateGo outside and observe nature. Watch deer, squirrels, birds, raccoons even, etc. They will all be rare soon, unfortunately. Sucks. Enjoy today and do something fun tomorrow.
It'll be interesting to see the most adaptable animals dominate when the less adaptable animals disappear. I recall a recent study saying corvids (crows, ravens, blue jays) were better suited to adapt - probably their above average intelligence but I can't recall. It'll be interesting to see which mammals follow suit. I'd bet we see an uptick in coyotes, black bears, raccoons, opossum?
Gray squirrels are common from Maine to Florida. I bet those suckers will do just fine once we're out of the picture.
lol
I think they’re probably pretty confused won’t know when to save their nuts for winter.
“It’ll be interesting to see”?? More like heartbreaking to witness the demise of too many species. “Interesting” isn’t the word I’d ...
I think I'm past the grief personally, I know nothing I do can change it. Stressing about it won't make it any easier on me.
Same, grief and concern have been replaced with callousness and morbid curiosity.
I’m not sure I’ll ever reach that point.
“It’ll be interesting to see”?? More like heartbreaking to witness the demise of too many species. “Interesting” isn’t the word I’d ...
Yes, this is heartbreaking. This is not interesting. It's beyond tragic . . . beyond description and human words . . .
Wish I believed in the force of Gaia to come in and protect species that are innocent. Species that have no voice amidst the roar of destruction from humans.
I used to believe that "Mother Nature" would come in and make things right. Clearly, that is not happening. It seems like we exist in a universe where love and compassion mean nothing. I hope I am wrong.
Speaking of crows, I’ve seen tons more this year. It’s like they have taken the place of some birds I used to see more often (cardinals, blue jays, goldfinches, doves)
I will be interested to see which ones turn on us like we deserve.
I have the opposite approach, better get used with none of it.
Nah, fuck that, get out there and connect with whatever critters you have around. Even if it's just the neighborhood racoon or squirrel.
You do you. Raccoons and squirrels are fine without us, actually they would do better without us.
Oh yeah for sure, I'm saying I'm not fine without them, lol
Then vote Trump in 2024
This collapse is going to be biblical. Wow.
SS: Related to collapse as early springs are causing a rise in animal asynchrony, in which they are struggling to adapt to being woken up or migrating out of sync with when the resources they need are available. Also earlier springs bring an increase in tick and mosquito-borne illnesses. Screwing with the seasons has a large impact on the natural world and it’s only going to accelerate from here on out.
mf dst and sst lines are again rising after a dip for few days
I just saw an article in the Atlantic about widespread climate damage to stone fruit production. We might end up with no peaches or plums this year.
Is it just me, or do things feel particularly bleak this year?
I have a feeling this is gonna be the first year that food in developed countries takes a serious nose dive. An undeniable one. In a sick way I'm looking forward to it because people in my life treat me like I'm nuts talking about widespread food shortages.
All of the climate deniers who have ofc moved on from denying that the globe is warming because it’s now warming so fast and so noticeably that even deniers can recognise the change in climate over a 30 year period, these fuckers are still insisting things are going to be fine “because climate change is a natural cycle”.
I am going to be so glad they are signing their own death warrant (as well as our own ofc).
My boss talks about climate change like it's a normal occurrence in Earth's history. I told him about the rate at which things are changing and he said "maybe"
This year he brought it up again, so I again mentioned the rate of change, and he said "Yeah, that makes sense"
So, it's happening
It's not just stone fruit.
Last year (and this year), there have been a growing number of supply issues with fresh fruit and vegetables. Flooding in California and Mexico during the last two winters is impacting strawberry quality and yield. Same with blueberries, I believe. The fruit is smaller, more likely to bruise, and probably at a lower Brix counts than usual. The mango supply also nosedived the last 6 months...
Yeah, climate change is already negatively impacting food supply.
I love peaches...
well there might not be millions of them for you this year
It’s like a return to my 1960s childhood when fruit was seasonal and we got oranges in Christmas stockings as a treat.
The thing is, I grew up in Florida, which produces most of the nation's oranges. The oranges of my youth were so large and sweet, my cousin and I used to cut holes in them and suck out all the juice.
Now, finding a decent bag of oranges is becoming difficult. They're tougher, drier, less sweet, and spoil more easily. Same with tomatoes and strawberries. There has been a precipitous decline in their taste and quality over the last few years. Out-of-season cultivation and long-distance shipping aside, it's worrying.
Yes, it’s noticeable. The first decrease in quality was in the 70s when they were bred for travel but we always figured the good ones stayed in Florida.
What would kids say now if all they got was an orange or 2 (maybe some nuts thrown in) in their stockings?
Where I am in Western Australia it’s the wine grapes that have failed. Sorry fellas, it’s a dry apocalypse.
BC expects 1-3% of the normal grape harvest.

It’s looking bad in Niagara, too.

Please don't say things like that!!! I was planning to drink through the end times damnit!!!
I'm sure there's going to be climate damage to nearly all food crops this year in one way or another. To exactly what extent, remains to be seen. IMO people are going to be eating less, by no choice of their own.
Steel your mind and your body. Plenty of PTSD and harder times ahead.
i’ve been getting into fasting. it’s great for my health, and one added benefit is I’m prepared for food shortages. Only one meal a day? No problem! That’s what I’ve been doing anyway
Congrates, you're 3 steps ahead of than most.
Yay! PTSD for everyone! /s
I predict farming is going to move indoors to those vertical farms because outdoors can’t sustain crops before too long.
Where are they going to source their water from? Dried up riverbeds? Comtaminated aquifers?
Maybe we can suck the suffocating humidity out of the atmosphere?
Moisture farming...Like on Tatooine?
In France we got up to 25C! We got early plant spring growth, if there's a fall of temperature with an early spring freezing then it's going to destroy the plants.
"Climate change is altering the way animals, insects and plants behave, and has cascading effects in delicately balanced ecosystems."
No shit!
Breaking news: If you stare into the sun you'll go blind.
No worries, 50% of my town’s inability to manage their trash correctly while living in bear country is going to sustain the local population of bears, at least until my neighbors can’t afford their weekly dosage of hot pockets.
Or the bears eat them. Whichever comes first. Personally I hope it's the bears.
Which animals? The only animals worth living are those enjoying full board in those massive concentration camps where they’ll be ruthlessly slaughtered.
Wild animals freely roaming have been systematically murdered
Was going to say this. This is not hyperbole. Over half the world's mammal biomass is animals we keep just to torture and kill. And there's no slowdown in the razing of the rest of the planet to sustain and grow the concentration camps.
It's having no effect on climate change deniers though, the worst animals. They are just fine and will be until they realize they can't go outside without their hair catching on fire.
Requeim for evolution's greatest blunder.

Don't forget the trees! They have been trying to bud between every cold snap so far this winter.
Hummingbirds arrived last week, 5 weeks early. I found one frozen to death two days after I saw my first one. It's been +15-20F for 6 weeks and about every 10 days we get a cool day and a freeze. Trees, flowers, insects and early arrival migrant birds are in for a rough ride. Still a full 4 weeks until average last freeze :(
Democrats are to blame
How so?
It’s there hoax
You mean "their" not "there".
