Like almost all of the contiguous US, we are having abnormally warm temperatures for an abnormally long period. Winter is a big deal here, and all sorts of sports, celebrations, activities etc are centered around the certainty of deep cold and strong ice by the time it rolls around to late January. The lake ice seems to be strong enough to hold people, but it has puddles on it, which freaks me out a bit. After flooding them just a few days ago, they are already planning to retire the hockey rinks they set up in nearly every park every year.
There is no end in sight. I think it is likely we'll get at least one more cold snap and maybe some short-lasting snow, but projected highs into February are near 50F and lows barely hitting freezing.
Basically, the only weather approaching real MN deep winter lasted only about 10 days. What we have now is late March, early April weather. Everything is brown. Very depressing
