Didier Sent Cobra Crack (finally)!
God finally relented and let him have it.
The glory WAS for him after all
That line will live in my brain for the rest of my life
ME TOO!!!
Me too. This gives me hope.
Best closure to a climbing story/project ever.
Crazy. He did an interview with Niall Grimes a while back where he explains what happened the years after the First Ascent movie: Jam Crack with Didier
One of the most interesting climbing interviews I’ve ever listened to, people should definitely check it out. Even better that Niall Grimes didn’t know his full story going into it.
From Mountain Project:
To date Cobra Crack is one of the hardest crack routes in the world. Overhanging fingers on perfect granite. If you can climb the grade [5.14] and enjoy cracks then the Cobra is or at least should be on your ticklist. One of the best rock climbs in the world without question. Sack up and fight the pain and the glory is yours!
Brought a smile to my face when I read that this morning.
Sent some confusion across my face until I read which sub I was in
Okay for those who also didn't know / understand the significance of this, Didier was a 2000s elite trad climber who was known for putting up FAs. In 2006, he was featured trying to get the FA of a public longstanding project but trying it as a trad route not a sport route in Reel Rock called FIRST ASCENT: THE MOVIE.
I won't spoil what happens, but know it's an extremely valiant effort that all climbers can relate to, and this post is the final bow on the long term story.
What beta did he use mono?
Look at the photo lol
Best. Plot. Twist. Evah.
I'm SO happy for Didier!
Probably just as stoked he sent it as he is. His movie was one of the first trad movies I watched on reel rock. The cam trigger with the Velcro is something I still think about
Yooo thats huge!! Congrats Didier!
Holy shit! Yes!!!
Wow! Congrats, what a come back by Didier
The most wholesome send in a long long time.
I'm so happy for him!
Yesssssss!!!!!
It's very climbing to celebrate someone based on some arbitrary achievement while ignoring the actual person:
"When he was in his mid-20s, he cut off all of his relationships, including with his partner and daughter in Squamish, B.C., to join a monastery and become a Catholic priest for 13 years.
"I quit everything for God," he told Macarenko. "

Not to say one can never atone for their past sins, but certainly this person shouldn't be held up as some kind inspiration for anything...
"Berthod returned to Squamish, about an hour's drive north of Vancouver, and reunited with his partner and daughter."
I'm sure he regrets it now if that makes you feel better.
Didier needs a biographical film so so so so badly, literally one of the craziest life stories I've ever heard. So happy it ended well for him
Was he the climber who suddenly had horrible knee pain of undetermined cause and had to abandon the FA? Or was that later about the time Whittaker and Randall got it? I remember that bit from the movie, that someone who was very close just woke up one day and their knee was hosed so bad they couldn't walk and it just didnt get better.
First Ascent was one of the first climbing movies I watched when I was learning to climb. Reading this post gives me the chills.
