If we make it to the next round... Can we create a petition to get John Shorthouse back as the play-by-play announcer?

I'm trying not to get ahead of myself, and I was learning to live with Cuthbert (not Simpson), but last night I really missed Shorty.

Is there any precedence of a fanbase being loud enough on this issue to get their way? If we put our heads together, and the stars align, I want to believe we could make it happen if we get numbers behind us.

Shorty deserves to call these games. He's a Canucks legend and if the Canucks end up as the last Canadian team in the playoffs, (again, it's not over yet), I don't see the harm in having a hardcore homer as the announcer.

Who's with me? Should we start a #wewantshorty movement? Is that even possible?

Cuthbert isnt as good as he used to be, but he's still enkoyable. I cannot stand Simpson, especially when he's on oiler games. I can't believe we have been stuck with for 15+ years.

It's interesting you say that Cuthbert isn't as good as he use to be. I thought the same as well, but can't seem to pinpoint what it is. I've always been a Cuthbert fan and loved his work back in the day doing CFL games.

I think it's just age. He's a little slower, gets a bit mixedup sometimes (not very often), and his delivery during exciting plays doesn't reach the same highs or have the same impact as it used to.

Yeah that could be it. With Bob Cole, he had such a great voice all the way until the end, he was able to get away with the gaffs. Cuthbert never had a great voice, but he made it up with his tempo and timing for big moments.

Shorty avoids the national broadcasts. He's easily the best play by play guy and if he was to join the national broadcast, it would mean he'd mainly call Toronto or Edmonton games, like what happened with Hughson. Shorty was featured in the first round due to the amount of Canadian teams in the playoffs. He's not going to be back the rest of the way.

Because of that, he won't be on any of the playoff broadcasts the rest of the way. He used to do radio during the playoffs back in the day, but Brendan Batchelor does a great job. If you don't like Cuthbert, you could always mute the SN broadcast and pull up Batchelor's radio feed.

I've noticed the Sportsnet app can be up to 30s behind cable

I'm watching on the Sportsnet app and listening on the TuneIn Radio app. I've found the radio app is usually a bit more delayed than normal radio, so I can pause the game on either app and sync them so they're close enough for me. (It's kind of a bitch tho, but worth it imo, Batch is just so much better)

Shorthouse has been with Sportsnet since it's inception (back when it was CTV Sportsnet) as a play-by-play guy splitting time with Jim Robson. If there's a seniority system, he'd be at the top. He can't choose who he commentates for if he's a national broadcaster.

Just listening to Bachelor on AM650 is so enjoyable. Guy paints an amazing picture and reminds me when I used to listen to Jim Robson on CKNW when games were barely televised. I wish my Shaw feed wasn’t so delayed or else I’d mute the TV and listen to AM650 over it.

We are so lucky to have such great play by play masters year after year.

As someone else suggested, try the TuneIn radio app and you can delay the feed so it matches the Sportsnet TV feed.

Yeah I really don’t think he’s that bad. Also with how exciting the games are, are we really focusing that much on the announcers? I’m on the edge of my seat and anxious as hell every game. I probably end up tuning out the announcers for the most part

Won't happen. Cuthbert is the lead for Rogers/CBC. Shorty is not a national guy. Either way Cuthbert is staying in west as a Canadian team b will move to the WCF. The #2 team is Singh. So he will get the ECF. And then Cuthbert will get the Stanley Cup Final

Yes, I'm sure the petition will absolutely work even it were to get 1,000,000 signatures. Not to rain on your parade, but like it or not, Cuthbert and Simpson are the number one team. Shorthouse, as good as he is, (would be nice if he did call the games), has only been used when there's more games than announcers. Even if Cuthbert and Simpson weren't calling the games, it would almost a certainty it would be Singh/DeBrusk doing the games.

I don’t get why on one of sportsnets 800 channels they can’t just give us a feed with audio arena. They have done this via streaming and with Montreal games a number of years ago. It works just fine.

If the national broadcast team wants to verbally suck off the oilers and macdavid, fine. But give us an alternative.

I’m ok with Cuthbert. Simpson’s homerness gets fairly irritating but I can put up with it for the most part. I will say that Cuthbert saying something along the lines of “Canucks will have one more home game” after we win last night was a really odd way of phrasing it. Couldn’t you just say “Canucks are a win away from the WCF?”

I’m so relieved we didn’t get Singh though. I just don’t think he’s any good!

I can tolerate Cuthbert in doses. His energy is so flat in my opinion and he used to be one of my favorites. The 2004 season I looked forward to his calls. Now maybe it's Simpson dragging him down or his age, I don't know but he's not half as quick, clever or energetic as Shorty.

And don't even get me started on Simpson. This is one time I'd rather the other oiler homer, debrusk

Watched game 3 on ESPN and found their commentators better than what we currently have, maybe because they really had no skin in the game so they were giving truly unbiased observations on the game idk.

When I compare Shorty to Singh, for example, it's night and day in terms of bias. Also doesn't help that Singh is an inherently bad commentator, but his homerness is through the roof.

Wouldn’t stop them from putting Singh up with us versus oilers. It’s just that playoff games are by seniority on the national level, and there’s not room for a Canada national broadcast, US national broadcast and a regional one, let alone sportsnet would never pay for 2 broadcast teams.

There was a tweet from Friedman on it, and it’s what happens every year. Cuthbert is the number one in seniority for PBP, which gives him the leafs games, Singh is number two so he would get the next highest premier broadcast, which would have been the oilers versus Canucks.

That's how the national broadcasts are. There's a tier level and shorty isn't part of it. He stays doing local broadcasts only, very rarely will he call another team but not for playoffs unless Cuthbert or Singh are calling for other teams

Why Shorty isn't calling the games is beyond me. He should at least be calling the home games and Singh do the Oilers home games.

I find it rather odd that last year, Shorty was calling Boston games (a cruel joke) in the Playoffs but this year of all years, he's not utilised.
