New Posting Guidelines & Updated Post FlairSub Announcement

Today we've updated the options for post flair, to better differentiate between the different types of posts here, and hopefully reduce some confusion when posting.

We ask that when posting you add the flair tag that best corresponds to your content. If uncertain, leave blank and make a note in your post so that a moderator can address it.

An overview of user-selectable flair options:

Gear Advice
For any post seeking recommendations from others about what camera, lens, or accessory, to buy or rent. Please follow the existing requirements when asking for recommendations. This is not for asking advice on how to use your equipment or solve a problem—for that, you can use...

Tech Help
Technical questions, clarification on how a feature works, error messages...fall under Tech Help.

New Gear
For showing off a new or new-to-you piece of equipment. As always, include a photo of the gear and a photo or three taken with the gear. Also include an explanation of why you got it and how you like using it.

Lens of the Week
We're consolidating down to a single flair any lens of the week post, rather than individual tags for different lenses or focal lengths. As always, look for the current lens of the week topic to know which optic or focal length is current.

Canon News
For product announcements or other Canon-specific or related news. Either provide a link directly to announcements and press releases, or to a recognised source reporting on it. Examples are sites like Petapixel, dpreview, and similarly known sites.

Active Deal
For posts alerting the community to sales from recognised outlets such as the Canon Refurb Store, B&H Photo, Lens Rentals etc. Titles need to begin with the applicable country, the supplier, and then a description of the discount or deal on offer, e.g.

[USA] Canon Refurb Store — R5 reduced to $2199 + free BG-R10 Battery Grip

Any other important details (start/expiry dates) can go into the body of the post. If including a link directly to the deal or supplier site, the URL must be stripped of affiliate and tracking data, or the post will be removed.

If a deal is highlighted from a supplier deemed by the mod team as suspicious, untrustworthy or unsavoury for some other reason, it will be removed.

When a deal is out of stock or expired, the flair needs to be updated to...

Expired Deal
Don't delete the post, just update to the Expired flair, then we can view older deals easily.

Showcase
This will only be made available to select when a post inviting the sub to make Showcase contributions is active.

If you have any questions about the new flair options, please feel free to comment here or send a message to the mods.

[LOTW] Lens of the Week: 135mm primesLens of the Week

Every user interested in participating may post ONE post of a picture or pictures taken with The Lens of the Week, with the following rules. Please note the updated rules concerning settings. I've bolded them below:

  • The Lens of the Week will be specified in a sticky post, and as long as that post remains up, it is fair game to submit LOTW posts.

  • All content must be SFW--no nudes, artistic or otherwise.

  • Specify that it is a 'Lens of the Week' post by starting their post with [LOTW] It may be taken by any version of the lens of the week, and with any modifiers (teleconverters, speed boosters, etc).

  • The title must specify the lens and describe the image (for example, [LOTW] 135mm f/2.0 portrait)

  • Please include the rest of the image metadata (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera body) in the title, image caption, or comments.

OP must remain active in the thread to discuss your setting and composition choices--abandoned LOTW threads will be subject to removal after a reasonable period of no-replies

Additional pictures taken with the lens may be posted in a gallery or in comments in your thread, but please only make a single thread per week. The 'No pictures that just happen to be taken with Canon equipment' rule still applies to non-LOTW posts.

If you have any suggestions for the future of this series, please comment below. I'm building out a spreadsheet of future LOTW picks to keep things flowing every week, and popular demand can definitely play a role in what comes next.

Canon selphy 1500Tech Help

What form factors can I print on using this printer. Also is there creative ways I can mimick a kodak framed printing paper? Or maybe 3rd party printing paper that has different border types and frames in the printing paper itself?

Ultimately I want a creative way to print photos onto different types of photopaper, with unique types of borders.

Rebel T7 or EOS R50?Gear Advice

Totally new at this camera stuff. I really want to buy a good camera for photography and video recording.

I was originally set on the R50 but my friends suggest getting the T7 instead.

I’m a really small content creator so I would love a camera with a good recording quality and I also love photography so I want one with good picture quality as well.

Any advice is appreciated I don’t know anything about camera specs. Thank you!

How good is the R8 as a backup to the R5?Gear Advice

Still photographer that shoots some video. I’m upgrading my kit and making it lighter. I’m getting older and don’t want to schlep as much gear.

I picked up the R5 in December and I f’n loooooove it. I have a 5d4 and just sold my 5d3 on eBay….so my dilemma is, how much longer do I keep an old body? I was waiting on the R5ii, but I needed a main body to take the place of the 5d4 and the r5 delivered photo and video specs and made focusing absurdly easier. So no looking back.

Now that I’m continuing down the RF rabbit hole, I have to look at the backup body. I can sell my 5d4 with a grip for +- what a used R8 will cost me, and I get a new body made in 2023 that’ll work magically with my rf 28 pancake. No sense in switching the glass until both bodies are RF. I’m also starting to shoot more video after 15 years of shooting stills professionally and I think that an r8 w/ a pancake 28 on a gimbal will be easier to carry around all day. I think I might want to get the R5C2 when it comes out and then either jettison the R8 or keep it as a vacation camera, because the G16 was never very satisfying.

Decisions decisions. 🤷🏻‍♂️

24mm pancake, is it worth it? (Ladakh trip)

Hi!

As the title says, this summer I'll be visiting Ladakh and it's basically a dream come true.

I'm mainly interested in buddhist festivals/reportage, landscape and the Milky Way. I don't care much about sharpness, I'm in love with the artistic and emotional aspect of photography.

The point is, I'm a broke medical student and my gear is, well, outdated: right now I only have a canon 450D with the 17-85mm lens (plus the kit lens, but that one's really terrible).

The canon 24mm would be significantly less heavy to carry around (I'm a petite girl) and definitely better quality, but I've never tried a prime lens and not having the possibility to zoom in kind of scares me.

Is it worth to buy the pancake? My budget is 200€/$, it makes no sense to upgrade the camera.

Advice on new lens or upgraded camera bodyGear Advice

I bought a Rebel T7 just over a year ago and have been using it for casual photography, mainly close-ups using a Sigma 105mm macro lens. I also have a Canon 18-200mm lens. I'd like to do more wildlife photos and have been looking at the Sigma 150-600mm lens. I'm wondering if I'd be better off spending my $1200 budget on the lens (Which I can get new for just over $900) or if I should upgrade to a used version of something like the R8.

I don't care about video performance. I'm just looking for the best photo quality I can get for my $1200 budget.

Planning to build my R/RF Ecosystem

Hello! I want to start photography as a hobby and as the title suggest, I kind of want to start building my R /RF ecosystem. As of now, I have an R50 with the kit lens and a 50mm 1.8 prime lens. In what order should I purchase the following?

  • RF 100 - 400mm 5.6-8
  • RF 18 - 150mm
  • Full frame camera body (Preferably the cheapest)
  • Teleconverter (Will most probably go for the 2x)

As of now, I just want to learn the basics of photography and further down the line, I'd like to expand my kit so I can play an all-around kind of ecosystem with my lenses. Please do remember I'm still learning photography and so if there are any alternatives to the parts I've mentioned above that I could consider, please leave a comment. Price-wise, I'd really go with the cheapest way out, I don't think I'll be needing those crazy expensive lenses.

EF 135mm sharpness issues with a filter

Hello there, folks.

I have an old EF 135mm lens and some cheap K&F filters (like nano-b, etc.) for it. When I use them, sharpness drops significantly, even with a simple UV filter.

I also have an RF 85mm f/2 lens with a K&F Concept nano-x filter (which is more expensive compared to the 135mm), and sharpness is fine. The same goes for the RF 35mm f/1.8 with the nano-x CPL+VND. It has some color cast for sure, but it's fixable. There are no sharpness issues. The 50mm f/1.8 uses a cheaper K&F VND, but it's also acceptable (though it catches flares from time to time).

What is the nature of this phenomenon? Larger filter size? Longer focal distance? The thing is, I mostly use the 135mm outdoors and I always use ND + external flash when shooting portraits outdoors. So, the EF 135mm is kinda useless for me at the moment, and I'm even thinking about selling it.

On the other hand, the EF 135mm is EXTREMELY sharp when I use it without any filters. So, maybe there is a way to mitigate this issue? Buying better filters? Buying a drop-in filter adapter?

The camera is an R8.

Best everyday lens for Canon R10

Hi guys,

I am seeking to buy an everyday lens for my Canon R10 . I already have a Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens for wildlife shooting and a Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens (long story but was mistakenly given the lens and went on a long trip right after). What lens should I get for everyday/ travel shooting?

Option to buy a converter for the EF lens as well. Thank you!

Vintage/Retro Lens/Filter for Canon EOS 1300d

I’ve got an EOS 1300d just to take photos here and there. My girlfriend wants to spend loads of money on a camera that can take photos which look like the ones off a disposable camera. Is there a lens or filter I can get for the 1300d that would have the same effect and save us a lot of money? Any help appreciated!

Canon 100-400 F4 ii issuesTech Help

I recently purchased this lens used. I love how the images it takes look. I’ve noticed that it feels like there is something that like clunks around inside of the lens when I am moving holding it. In addition to this it often times will disconnect and say something is wrong with the camera sensor. Can anyone point me in the direction of how to properly diagnosis the problem?

Canon R6 Mark II Locked IBIS when turned off?

Hi, I just recently got a new r6 mark ii. Just a genuine question, can I lock the IBIS when turning off the camera? Just worried because when the camera is in my bag, the IBIS is just wiggling around. Will it affect it? Thank you

Copying files from computer to a canon t5 DSLR

Hey, ive been printing 4x6 photos on my cp-200 printer, its not compatable with windows 10 anymore so ive been copying files from my computer to the SD card for my t5, and a few of them are saying "Cannot playback image" is there a way around this?
Edit for more detail:
the canon cp-200 wont talk to my computer since its outdated, so the only way i can print photos off of it is with my canon t5, its worked a few times copying files to the SD card but a lot of them are saying cannot playback.

EOS R5......

Well all I pulled the trigger. Got the refurbished EOS R5 ordered yesterday. $2399 on sale. My current camera is a 6d that I purchased in 2012. I'm just going with the adapter for now. I have an ef 24-105 f4, ef 70-200 f4, and an ef 50mm f1.4. If you were to get an R lens with what I already have what would you get? I do some nature, some portrait. Any recommendation would be awesome. Thank you in advance.
