28 mile 2 day float. Great smallmouth fishing even with the water a bit low. Really love this river.
I’ve read the John King / Henry King story before but I have never heard this but about the mule! Thanks for sharing, very interesting, is this local lore or any books your familiar with on it? I lived in NWA 15 years ago and wish I had spent more time on the rivers.
Henry King, yes! It’s one of the first stories in the book, “The History of Madison County”
Looks amazing. Thanks for sharing.
On my bucket list.
Nice picture. What part of the river was the trip?
We did Marble to Rockhouse, I believe the section in the pictures was before the Marshall Ford access point
Thks, is this the best section for scenery? We are looking for a short river camp trip in AR, never came across the Kings.
This stretch is comparable to the Buffalo River in terms of bluffs. I’ve canoed several ozark rivers over the past few years and many of them have this type of topography / geography.
I was lucky enough to grow up on the upper Kings River. The leader of the first a White explorers to come through Kingston was named John King. He was just entering the valley for the first time when he sat down and literally went crazy. His crew didn’t know what to do, so they eventually strapped him to a mule to try to return home. The mule went crazy and jumped off the bluff killing the animal and the man. They buried him next to a stream where he landed. Hence, the Kings River.
