Where to eat?Megathread

Husband and I will be in Brum for a couple of days at the end of the month, won't have a car so looking for somewhere nice enough (basically not a Wetherspoons) but not pricey to eat (lunches and dinners) in or around the Bullring. Bonus points if it's not a wide-spread chain restaurant. Thanks!

Edit: Thank you all, some great suggestions here, wish I had time to try more! I definitely want to check out the Asia Asia food hall and probably Bodega as well (husband loooves Mexican food). If we can fit it in then Santorini sounds amazing.

Do the Krishnas still dance in the city centre.

I really hate religion in the city centre but I make an exception for the Krishnas. Do they still dance in the city centre. Has anyone seen them recently?

Where to work remotely from in Birmingham?

Lucky enough to be working remotely. But the downside is, I get a bit lonely sat at home all day.

I want to work somewhere ideally like a pub with a nice view or something. Is there anywhere like this?

I found some rooftop pub/bars which would be ideal but not sure whether they allow remote workers during the day

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Cherry Reds - music?

Hi, I saw a lot of reviews about Cherry Reds and their 'good music'. Wondering what kind of era (if any) does this place play?

Pet relocating to Birmingham

So my dog will be joining me in Birmingham in a few weeks (from abroad). He's a small dog.

Does anyone have any recommendation to which database I should register him on? and when he arrives which vet is best? (I think he would needs a standard check up to get him registered etc.).

Thanks in advance.

Recommendations for personal trainers in Solihull, or east Birmingham

Hi everyone. I’m completely blind, and because of that I don’t do as much exercise as I’d like to. This wasn’t so much of a problem before, but now that I started working from home over the past six months I’ve gained a lot of weight and would like to try and lose it. I’ve been thinking about getting a treadmill, but I’m not sure if I’d have the motivation yet, and I’d like to try lifting weights to build muscle tone, but want to make sure I do it safely so that I don’t injure myself.

Does anyone have any recommendations for personal trainers in Solihull or East Birmingham, I don’t mind travelling a distance if I need to.

Where can I watch the euros in brum?Question

I’ve looked at the old crown but it’s all sold out for the group game me and my mates want to go to and Luna springs last entry is at 6pm which I won’t be able to make. Any other ideas of where to go for a good atmosphere in town?

Great Barr, Pheasy and Queslette?Question

Hello fellow Brummies..

What's peoples honest thoughts on the Great Barr area? Positive and negative would be appreciated!

Me and my partner are planning to move around that way as it's the middle ground of where we both currently live, looking for houses is tough and I'm so used to west Birmingham I dont really want to move to North but for my partners sake I'm willing to...

I dont know too much about Great Barr but it seems like it has nice houses but it's also close to areas like Perry Barr and Kingstanding, I've heard Kingstanding is a racist area so I'm not trying to move up that way and I've heard PB is abit of a dump..

Just honest opinions guys.

Bullring quiet

Went to the Bullring for the first time in ages because I hate going places when they are really busy. Parking was expensive but not only that at midday it was a lot quieter than I imagined it to be! The shops I did go into were really quiet. Is this normal now?

Edit: forgot to add this was on Friday!

Last min Brum groupQuestion

There’s a group like this in London I think is a great idea, when you find yourself free but haven’t got someone to do something with (I find this happens a lot more since hitting mid 30s), just wondering if people would appreciate a WhatsApp group you can post to and see who is available/close by to join you? Or if you just need a plus one to something ⭐️ Nice way to meet new people with similar interests 😊 Upvote if you’re into it I guess?

Every driving instructor is fully booked

I really want to start learning to drive but every driving instructor seems to be fully booked until November/December. Is there any way I could get myself one ASAP?

Thank you.

My excitement for my move is dwindling due to various comments from people who already live there… 😂Question

Howdy!

I’m moving to Selly Oak (Dawlish Road area) because I received full funding to do my PhD at UoB. My supervisors are perfect for what I’m doing & I’ve been really excited to get back out into the world and do my thing. I spent 4 years in Bristol and a year in Durham, but the last year I’ve been living in my Dad’s spare room working a dead end job.

So as you can imagine I’m thrilled to be moving forwards and that’s totally still where my head is mostly at… however.

I changed my location on Hinge (dating app) to Selly Oak… yeah I know it’s a bit sad 😂😂😂 but I don’t see the point in meeting people here when I’m moving away in a month. So I’ve been chatting to a few people and we’re getting along etc but the main theme, and they aren’t joking either is… “why the HELL would you choose to move here”.

Here’s one quote from a girl I’ve been chatting to:

“It's where all the undergrads at UoB live, think giant rats, rubbish on the streets, lots of break ins. Which road are you on? Some of them don't have bins”

As you can imagine, it’s not hard for this general theme to have slightly hampered my excitement. Rats especially… oh god I’m too neurotic and afraid of germs for that. And crime? Obviously a big turn off. I’ve not have much experience living in an area where crime is the norm.

So yeah… how accurate is this picture of the area in moving to? I’d be very grateful for honest answers!

Thanks in advance

Long shot - looking for family

Hi all,

This is a long shot, but I’m hoping to find the family of Theophilus (TJ, I think) James. I believe he died in Birmingham in the 80s or 90s. He was a sax player. He was Jamaican.

Thanks.

Free tennis courts in and around Brum (with or without booking)

Does anybody know some places where I can either book a tennis court for free (or cheap) or some parks with tennis courts that don't require booking? I had a look at Billesley Tennis & Fitness Centre but it costs £16 just to book a court for an hour! I'm relatively central but can drive.

Loud music tonight?

At the risk of sounding like me old nan, what is that loud music I can hear in south Birmingham? (I'm in Kings Heath??) Sounds like some sort of drum and bass festival, was on last night too and a load of fireworks. Been googling live music events but can't find it, just want to know what it is!
