Is this where I can vent about the TA who took points off a lab report for- and I quote- “spelling and grammer”. It’s been close to a decade and I’m still salty (and no, it didn’t impact my grade in the class at all).
ETA: my complaint aside, people having different stylistic expectations is the WORST. My boss and his boss liked me to produce engineering drawings a little differently and it could be so frustrating.
I feel this on such a deep level. My grad school advisor threatened not to pass and sign off on my thesis/project because I italicized something in a DRAFT document. The dept chair had to step in and it was a whole mess. I swear faculty are like this just so they can be on a power trip. Hopefully you're almost done!
Oof, that sounds so frustrating! Differing standards like that are so annoying, and tricky to get straight in your brain. I had similar issues when I worked in transcription for a few different companies; each one had their own standards, down to whether you write "percent", "per cent" or "%". You have my sympathy, because keeping that stuff straight is a PITA.
Thank you for the sympathy!! I know I'm probably over reacting but oaf, yeah its a lot to keep straight
My entire life is popping off right now and it's just weird because I have absolutely zero time for anything happening for the next month and change.
This is a very weird feeling. I don't have time to have a work life and personal life right now.
my parents retired to SC a few years ago and invited my bf and I to come over the holiday. Anyway I've watched "Decision To Leave" one too many times and damn who else has seen this movie? Because noe that I'm at the beach I'm SO curious if the ending and Seo Rae's ultimate fate could actually happen how it does in the movie? What do people think?!?!!?
I love that movie. Literally think about it - and it’s amazing editing - still. It’s probably possible but it would require an almost Herculean amount of self control. God the way he looks at her, it’s just ugh, pain!
It is one of my favorite movies ever. Hence me thinking about it at the beach, lol. Well if that's one thing she has.......
"The moment you said you love me your love was over. The moment your love ends, mine begins" ugh just so good
dude we are in the same state lol
but also it probably doesn’t happen very much but i’m sure people think about pulling a seo rae more often than never—i sometimes think about pulling an awakening myself
Oh heyyyyyy ! Waves from Hilton head where I've been assured by my father (who is seemingly not wrong haha) that my BF and my arrival has brought down the average age of the island by 2 decades 💀. But we've been having fun!
See I noticed how
Greetings from the literal opposite end of the state! Ngl the sand on Hilton Head is particularly fine and clean (like no rocks or shells etc) so it would be pretty easy for tide to move…
this is healthy and normal discussion
So my spouse and I are in the fun predicament of two family weddings, ten days apart in very, very different locations with time to kill in between. So if y'all have any recs for Rapid City, SD, Asheville, NC, and Gatlinburg, TN, I am here for it!
When will you be “here”? (TN/NC)
We will be in Asheville June 4-6 and Gatlinburg June 7-12.
Asheville!:
- Chai Pani. If you like Indian food, this is THE joint. They just opened a new spot over the weekend!
- Biltmore. So the Biltmore isn’t cheap to visit but if you’ve never been, it’s really worth going. It’s America’s larget private home and it’s absolutely stunning from top to bottom.
- Blue Ridge Parkway. Look, this is such a great time of year to take a drive on the BRP.
- Cúrate. If you like tapas, you must go.
- Highland Brewing. Asheville’s home to a ton of beer—New Belgium and Sierra Nevada both put their east coast distribution centers here—but Highland is true Asheville beer.
- Paddling. French Broad is a GREAT river for kayaking and canoeing. There are a slew of options for rentals along the river.
- Carl Sandburg Home. This is a drive south from AVL into Flat Rock, but it’s really cool. It’s an NPS site preserving the Sandburg homestead, mainly used by Sandburg’s wife to raise her internationally award-winning goats…and the descendants of those goats still live on site. And they’re friendly. And you can WALK RIGHT ON UP TO THEM. If you go, def eat at Hubba Hubba.
Gatlinburg is a place I tend to avoid, but obviously you’ll have enough time to hit up the Great Smoky Mountains! I’ve spent most of my GSM time in the western part of the park, so with that said:
- Clingmans Dome. The hike to the top is worth it.
- Cades Cove. This is the furthest western reach of the park so it’s a little more remote, but it’s beautiful. You’re more like to see a bear (!) here than in the eastern part of the park.
- The Townsend Wye. This is just a pulloff for Laurel Creek, but it’s a great place to stick your feet in the water.
- Dancing Bear Appalachian Bistro. Townsend’s fanciest restaurant, and absolutely DELICIOUS.
Let me know what you do! Always happy to hear what gems you’ve found too :)
Thank you so much! You actually sent me the Curate cookbook a few years ago for our Secret Santa and we both love Indian food. My partner is a beer drinker so we will definitely check out Highland. 10/10 recs all around!
Yoooooo I’m so glad that was you!! I forgot a really important recommendation for AVL so last but absolutely not least:
- French Broad Chocolate Lounge. SLAPS, and any line you have to wait in will be well worth the time.
YES YES and YES.
Also I really love Wedge Brewery for the vibe and the beer (I've only been to the one in the River Arts district, but I know there's another one). TBH it's hard to go *wrong* with beer in AVL and I really, really miss it.
Apartment hunting is going to break my spirit. It's the worst and I hate it and I want it to be DONE.
omg I totally relate--also why is it so expensive just to APPLY??? I'm hunting in Chicago and I want to be close to work, but I want to live in an older, shorter building. I won't be moving in until the beginning of July and it feels like that is SO CLOSE and yet in apartment hunting terms it's actually pretty far away lol.
We're open to moving anytime between tomorrow and ever, and you'd think that would help but no. It does not.
We're currently waiting to hear back on an amazing apartment in exactly the neighbourhood we want, but I am too American to be able to deal with the French garant situation and all I want to do is complain about it. This agency doesn't want to deal with the paid services that are out there ("We have had bad experiences, and also we find them very expensive for our clients"), they're not using the insurance (which I'm fine with since my partner doesn't have a permanent contract, and I do but I'm American, so we have 2 major liabilities in their eyes), so we're stuck with a physical guarantor. Which means we are basically restricted to apartments my partner's family could afford, if they're willing to be guarantors for us. And we out-earn all of them and are looking at apartments in *our* price range, AND you're not able to rent anything that's more than 1/3 of your pre-tax income anyways, so we may be forced to go below our budget (which is already lower than the maximum allowed) just because we have higher income than his family. Just please let me use the paid service, I am a very good tenant and I will take care of your apartment as if it's my own and stay there for a decade, please please please landlord. Please.
I graduated from law school a little over a week ago 😊🧑⚖️📝
Now I have to prepare for the bar exam lol...then I will actually like...be an attorney (if I pass ahhhh). Like for real! What the fuck! I know I'm not quite there yet, but it's so crazy to feel like the future I've spent a third of my life working towards is actually almost here.
Congrats! I feel like you were just talking about starting law school the other day! Good luck with the bar! 🥳
Girl SAME i have been commenting here since before I even APPLIED to law school (Jun 2020) and now here I am with my JD and my classy thomas more hat. Thank you so much <3 <3
Congrats! That's a huge accomplishment. I'm sure you'll smash the bar exam 🎆💐🍾
Thank you <3 <3 I am stressed but I am not letting prep consume me bc I know it would be worse to burn out.
I randomly came across the Reddit account of someone I know irl, looked at their post history (yes, I'm terrible) and saw they post in one of the subreddits about big dicks (about their own). A fair punishment for my nosiness!
It is your punishment but come on who amongst us would have the fortitude to not dive into someone's we know like that's post history?!?!
Could not be me lol. I've found multiple friends & acquaintances on reddit...I always peep. My greatest fear is finding one of my parents.
I actually did come across my dads because he posted a selfie on exmormon but.....I decided not to delve into my dads history 💀
Idk how I'm going to make eye contact with them now lol
giiiiiiirl you knew this would lead nowhere good
Oh I absolutely did and deserve what I got lol
I truly think the most aggravating thing about grad school is that you are re-taught "how to write" in undergrad. And then you first year of grad school, you are re-taught again how to write.
Only for some random grad professor one year in to be like "actually, I'm making you down to a B because you introduced a quote :)" Like?? the professors in my other grad classes told me we still needed that?? that just throwing random quotes into the paper makes it messy
Also, was anyone else taught in undergrad that you are supposed to write out the year like "twenty-twenty-four" and not "2024"? because I was 100% marked down in undergrad for not writing "twenty-twenty-two" out at least once. Now I'm being told that's a no-no
I'm so tired of school. I'm ready for proper adulthood now
