Paul Schrader Wants Kevin Spacey to Play Frank Sinatra in Potential Biopic: ‘Cancel Culture Won’t Let Him Go’
You’d think someone somewhere who is financing this would just politely ask… “sure you don’t want to cast someone who, you know, ISN’T a suspected… you know? Like return on investment…. Pretty please?”
I actually feel like, aside from the fact spacey is awful it’s not bad casting. I bet that he could do the voice well and with some make up look relatively like a 50+ Sinatra.
It shouldn’t happen, but in an alternate reality where spacey isn’t a scum bag I’m interested.
Spacey still has 23k listeners a month on Spotify from a soundtrack album he sang 20ish years ago
Beyond the Sea?
Yup
waiting for me?
Shitty casting completely. Spacey was always more in character actor territory and not known for his looks or every-man quality. Not Sinatra at all.
I'd still watch a Kevin Spacey Johnny Carson biopic though, which I should be ashamed of
Optics aside from casting a sexual predator lol
and a non-italian.
they should deepfake Phil Hartman into the role
It's great casting other than how much the public would be turned off from seeing a Spacey lead (for good reason) do people not know how well he can sing?
why not just cast Seth McFarlane? he's lived his whole life preparing for this moment
Wasn't the whole thing with the Scorsese film that the Sinatra estate would not let him investigate the possible mob ties? So if you can't do that then there is no reason for a Sinatra biopic in my view.
“Possible”
"I'm in construction!"
Waste management.
It’s a stereotype, and it’s offensive!
I heard you paint houses!
that would honestly be a pretty fucking funny workaround. Just have Sinatra inexplicably hanging around construction or garbage dudes the entire movie as shorthand for the mob lmao
“Frank Sinatra saved my life! Some toughs were beating me up in a parking lot and Frank came along and said, ‘Alright, boys, that’s enough.’”
- RIP Rickles
Let me tell you something my kraut mick friend
You ever hear Tarantino do that line? It's very funny.
It would be far more interesting to just make a movie about a Sinatra-esque character and write him however you want.
a gritty mob-centric Sinatra biopic with soundalike crooning written by some B or C grade songwriting team like the guys who did Greatest Showman or the Beetlejuice musical, that's my kind of trash
There are no crimes in crooning, dollface.
Fucking called his shot. Knew it would be a hit.
I almost didn't click into this thread but I am now glad I did. Thank you.
The 1-1 from Dyson
BAUTISTA WITH A DRIVE!
DEEP LEFT FIELD!
NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!
Maybe the best crowd pop I’ve ever seen in a baseball game.
I lived beside the stadium and we heard an enormous roar just as the ball left the pitcher’s hand on TV, it was incredible
So loud the Fox cameras shooting from across the field are visibly shaking.
You fucking Chad. Kudos.
Hah! Schrader probably saw the title of that video, didn't watch it and said "Sinatra? I'll get you there, buddy"
He already did Bobby Darin

I’m probably much more of a free speech guy than the average user of this subreddit, but I have to say, if “cancel culture” is keeping Kevin Spacey out of the limelight, I’m on board with it.
There's cancel culture and then there's "confirmed sexual liaisons with minors"
also: it's crazy rewatching The Usual Suspects and when Customs Agent Koolyan (sp?) is listing all the witnesses who died on their way to testify against Gabriel Byrne, it's FUCKING EERIE
I’m no spacey shill, but never convicted and charges dropped? Was anything ever elevated above allegations?
Well when two of your accusers suddenly die charges tend to be dropped.
Well TIL. Just for additional learning…
Fifteen others then came forward alleging similar abuse, including Boston anchorwoman Heather Unruh, who alleged that Spacey sexually assaulted her son; filmmaker Tony Montana; actor Roberto Cavazos; Richard Dreyfuss' son Harry; and eight people who worked on House of Cards. The Guardian was contacted by "a number of people" who alleged that Spacey "groped and behaved in an inappropriate way with young men" as artistic director of The Old Vic theatre.
He was great in K-Pax though
That’s crazy. I saw him as Richard III at the Old Vic
And what a performance that was! Next level good.
Jeez, they're dropping like Boeing whistle blowers.
He used to hang out in my fairly small town in Canada and I know lots of guys with bad stories about him
No, but it was allegedly fairly open secret in the film industires. I work in film, and obviously I dont have any proof other than heresay. But the story goes that during production of “The Shipping News” in halifax and along the east coast in canada, they had to cover up a big car accident when spacey was drunk and had a very young fella in his car at the time who Spacey had taken quite a liking to, I’ve heard different stories about him too, that he was gay, that he wasnt and Spacey was grooming him all sortsnof stuff. The story is pretty well known amongst film crews in Canada, kinda like the “Say the name, stroke the shaft” Stallone story. Can’t confirm, but this stuff has been talked about for years.
It’s not a free speech issue. Nobody is going to arrest him for being in the movie. People just may not spend the money to see it if he’s in it. But that’s no different than casting someone else people won’t pay to see who hasn’t been accused of being a pedophile.
I don’t want to get into a political argument, but free speech is about cultural values, not just government policy. Not sure where people get the opposite idea, maybe because “free speech” is sometimes used as shorthand for the first amendment
That being said, it’s not a free speech issue because it’s not Spacey’s speech that people take issue with
That cultural piece never made sense to me. The thing "restricting" someone's speech is just other people's speech.
Yea, exactly this. People have attempted to co-opt the term “free speech” to use for other contexts but the term of course originates with the First Amendment and is about government restricting speech. It basically has to be about this because, as you say, otherwise it’s just citizens speaking out against other people’s speech, and if you disallowed that you’d be… preventing free speech.
He’s allowed to keep being gross/horrible, and I’m allowed to not spend money on anything he’s associated with. I don’t see how that ties to free speech at all.
When people know they will be censured or ostracized for something, they tend not to do it. If you’re in a classroom where the teacher makes a snide remark every time someone asks a question, eventually no one is going to ask questions anymore.
While I understand your base sentiment, I think deciding to give your money to someone you find morally reprehensible is probably a sign of weak character. I don’t think mob mentality is helpful, but in the same way it’s good to have personal boundaries, it’s good to have moral and monetary boundaries.
Start spreadin the neeeeeeews
BAAA BAAAA BADADAAAA!
It almost reads like old Paul honestly isn’t even aware of why Spacey has been “cancelled”!
Yeah I think you can even draw a line between mad Mel who isn't going to be for a lot of people and like a teenager rapist. At least Mel Gibson has the courtesy to play suicidal alcoholic anti heroes that don't deserve your pity
Love a bunch of Paul’s movies but he is a gross old troll.
Look, I know that I'm a tart for Bruce Greenwood in general, but he's perfect in both look AND vibe. And he's so fucking hot.
That is the best idea I've seen for sinatra casting
Have you seen Toby Huss
Oh SHIT.
he already played Kennedy, whynot play the other side?
The director of Heartbeeps?
Let me be Frank.
Okay. Can I still be Garth?
Party on.
these FRANK UNDERWOOD CHRISTMAS SPECIALS keep getting weirder and weirder
Some P-Schrades opinions make you say “go off, King.”
And some P-Schrades opinions make you say “go offline, King.”
He could always go with the crooning creator of a certain sick, twisted, and politically incorrect animated series about a real family man.
Did you guys see the interview with Schrader where he said that Spacey was texting him about a book on Charlie Chaplin being 'cancelled' as if being a socialist and being a pedeophile sexual assaulter are in the same ballpark.
This is the world we live in, people. We get Frank Sinatra on the big screen and the picks are Scott Stapp (from Creed) and Kevin Spacey.
Semi related:
It brings me no joy to report that I was waiting for the crosswalk in NYC the other day and Radio Man was holding court with some other paparazzi/autograph people. I saluted him. But then I hear him complaining about how you can’t say the N-word anymore (but instead of saying N-word he said the actual word).
A sad moment!
That’s a bummer!
Wow!
Cancel Culture is why he can’t act??? huh, I was certain it was the serial sexual assault
Paul nooooo
What an incredible two sentences
Cancel culture or not, no one wants to see Spacey sing his way through another movie.
These days you can't even rape a couple dozen children without the woke left cancelling you smh 😞
Paul wants Frank to be frank
Look, I know that I'm a tart for Bruce Greenwood in general, but he's perfect in both look AND vibe. And he's so fucking hot.
You’re almost entirely right. He’s great. But he doesn’t have the star power of, well, a star. That, and he’s memorable for (generally) playing moral upstanding characters and let’s face it, Sinatra embodied celebrity entitlement and its trappings. Dude was literally charged for “crimes of seduction”. Beyond his charm and physical likeness, I can’t see my guy Jack Kennedy playing the scallywag. Thoughts?
Good point well made, but I do think he plays slimeballs and morally complex people well. Just look at his work with Mike Flanagan: in Gerald's Game, his cool guy exterior belies an absolute, selfish shitheel of a man, and in Usher, he embodies the ultimate seductive capitalist, a charmer whose empire is built upon the bodies of millions. Hell, in Mad Men he's a mostly great bloke, but it's a front for a guy who's afraid of getting boring and, well, old. So I think he can get the seductive bastard right, though you do have a point that he's more of a sexy character actor than a 1000-watt STAR.
They’re all good points. I’ll have to check out some of those flicks!
Oh yes, please do! The only flick is the fantastic Gerald's Game, though - The Fall of the House of Usher is a miniseries and Mad Men is a series 😊
Nah gimme the Scott Stapp version instead
Have Marty’s dog bite another finger.
why are film bros still slobbering all over this guy? he sucks
Kevin Spacey deserves to be cancelled though. It's not like he just made a tweet with arguably offensive subtext or something, he's an actual pedophile.
If I never again hear another word from Paul Schrader’s mouth I’ll live a very joyous life
He’s canceled?!? He was just at a horror convention in NC a couple months ago!
I am not sure how many strikes left I have to give ole Paul. Having a basic boomer/joe Rogan-esque misunderstanding of “woke”, is one thing. Forgiving sexual assault is quite another; I don’t care how available he makes himself to film bros. I
Cancel Culture? Didn’t he sexually assault a bunch of people?
Don’t understand why some folks are still enthusiastic about Spacey and tie themselves in knots trying to justify working with him. I don’t really put him on the level with (for me) the king of “what a great actor…unfortunately he’s a terrible person” James Woods. Spacey started phoning it in basically as soon as he won his second Oscar and his overrated work on House of Cards is the hackiest shit imaginable.
He was already Bobby Darrin. Also I don’t see him as Sinatra. Bit too old for it IMO.
Sinatra lived to be pretty old. He can plausibly play post-1965 until death 50-82 year old Sinatra through the power of makeup.
Another Facebook post I’m guessing… basically the only reason I open that app
Anyone see the Adam Friedland show interview? The last five minutes make Paul and Kevin seem very alike.
Being famous is just many people deciding they like you. They can also stop liking you and then you aren't famous anymore.
Fame doesn’t necessarily mean well liked, just well known. You can be a famous serial killer for example. Infamous isn’t the opposite of famous, it’s just a subset of famous.
Wonder what Ronan Farrow would think of that.
As a side note, The Chaplin book refered to in the interview is probably the recent book, “Charlie Chaplin vs America” by Scott Eyman. It’s very good.
Toby Huss
**Also Wants Harvey Weinstein as executive producer.
I’m sorry not offense to serial sex offender Kevin Spacey, but Frank Sinatra is a macho macho italian man, a bruiser, with blue eyes. He’s not Kevin Spacey Schrader, that’s why blow out was a piss poor Blow Up.
He did play Bobby Darin in that one movie that he also decided to direct himself
Well Paul Schrader can fuck off
Spacey is gross though
...Paul Schrader makes it really hard to ever support Paul Schrader.
Everyone has to put up with something. - D. Carrington
Not for nothing but didn't Sinatra meet Mia Farrow when she was wearing roller skates?
That guy couldn’t even handle making an Exorcist Prequel. I know they only gave him $20 to finish, but it’s still pretty dull. Not that Renny Harlin did much better…
I mean Paulie you know I'm gonna watch it
You don’t have to
But I will!
I didn't say I had to
I really do hate the, "He plays the same character in every role argument," but for Spacey I feel like it's kind of applicable. You watch one of his performances and you think it's pretty good, but then it just feels like he's redoing it, and his type of dryness gets pretty grating after a while. I feel like if there were never any sort of allegations, at this point in his career he probably wouldn't be doing too much.
Optics aside, it’s bad casting, no? Who wants that version? Love me some Schrader but I feel like this is his Theory Posting more than a legit goal. No matter, with Oh Canada soon premiering we know he’ll be kicked off Facebook soon enough by his marketing team.
