I’m actually old. We did this with Madonna in the 80’s. She was criticized, arrested and banned for not ‘caring’ about her younger demographic as her music and videos became more sexual and at times, political. She didn’t cave, nor should Billie. That’s how icons do.

Billie is being sincere. She’s not a 15 year old anymore, and I don’t think she ever signed up to be a role model for kids. Objectification vs feminism is not a new debate, but putting that on Billie is not fair. Whenever we’ve pushed teenage stars to buckle to the child fan base (and their conservative parents) when they are past their teenaged years, the results are rarely positive or, sincere.

the way i see it, she didn’t want to be sexualized as a child because she was a child. now she’s a woman and she’s made that decision for herself. if anything that’s the best goal you can set for kids who look up to you - be a child while you’re a child, don’t sexualize yourself to please the public eye, and once you’re old enough to make those decisions for yourself, make them in whatever way feels right for you! that’s the biggest takeaway from me, she’s not doing it for some sort of media or branding move, she’s doing it for herself and speaking on that experience as healing and liberating. i’d say it’s less progressive and more restrictive to encourage a young adult to subdue their beliefs and sexuality because of the idea they’re rubbing off on children. musicians are not and should never be your parents, and kids should consult their parents for questions and guidance regarding sexuality before looking to billie freakin eilish anyway. encouraging her to take that role is just feeding the problem, and if you are a parent and your kid looks to pop culture for guidance more than to you, that’s your fault.
and on the topic of immaturity, i think you’re not really thinking about the actual moral being expressed by billie’s statements and being turned off by the sound of something related to sex-positivity. when you’re in your early twenties, healthy sexuality is a new and exciting concept! of course she’s talking about it! your twenties are the time when you really get to explore the idea of sexuality without it feeling taboo or wrong for having that sexual desire, and to me it sounds like she’s actually been able to heal from the gross childhood sexualization she experienced and the many toxic/abusive relationships she’s alluded to in the past, and she’s just sharing that as a liberating experience. that shows more maturity to me than any modern pop star of her generation has said on the matter. it’s literally the definition of maturity at it’s inception; healthy sexuality!
and these younger fans you’re referring to aren’t going to be reading some article about her sexuality, and if they are/ if they actually do really care, i think more than anything they’d take away billie’s history of vehemently not sexualizing herself as a child, and eventually how excited and outspoken she was on the idea of learning yourself sexually as a young adult, once she was old enough! just because she’s speaking about it now doesn’t erase her past, it builds on it and creates a much healthier narrative of self exploration than i’ve seen come from quite literally any other pop star. feel free to correct me or give some examples of your own, i can’t think of one.
kids will interpret things a million different ways and back, it’s just not productive to worry about someone’s statement because of how the children could hypothetically interpret something. kids can be stupid but if they collectively know one thing it’s just that - that they’re children, and if they see all of these adults sexualizing themselves as adults, but see the younger versions of those adults unsexualized and unphazed by a jaded world desperate to sexualize them, it sets much healthier standards to me and is absolutely a huge step in the right direction.
