I’m backpacking to SEA in June for 2-3 months (I do not have an exact return date yet) and I’m wondering what are some good travel insurances to look into for a Canadian. I’m planning on renting motorbikes when I’m there and doing lots of different activities (snorkling, volcano hikes, surfing, etc). Any help is greatly appreciated :)
Unless you have a Canadian motorcycle license you will not be covered as your insurance will consider you to be driving illegally. You'll be on the hook for medical costs to yourself and others, plus damages to property. Another thing to check for is injury while inebriated, not just drunk driving, but if you fall down stairs while wasted and break your leg, your medical costs may be denied if you are found to be over the legal limit.
You are also going to want to notify your provincial health that you are out of province for 3 months, most will give you 5 or 6 months before you lose coverage but always best to check. You'll find that the majority will state thay you must have underlying provincial health coverage or the policy will be limited to $50K.
The best way is to use rates.ca and select travel insurance, enter the info and it will give you an idea of prices. It also provides copies of the wordings so you can see if your activities would be covered. Some policies exclude hikes over a certain metres, certain water sports, etc. Rates will be age and health dependant but vary by company. Companies like World Nomads and Safety Wing have sites that will give you quotes as well, usually seem cheaper but they charge for additional things like hikes over a certain elevation and World Nomads had a stipulation that you had to be back in Canada on the 365th day of travel.
I've used MSH International and Allianz Global, had good service and prompt claims assistance with both. Two things to keep in mind:
1) read the wording. You need to understand what to do in the event of a claim, what's included, what's excluded, etc. If you don't understand it, ask.
2) you get what you pay for.
