Bringing expensive camera to SEA

Nah man don't bring your photography gear on a trip where you might want to participate in photography.

Of fucking course you're at risk of losing it. It's expensive tech. Literally anywhere in the world this is going to be a high risk carry item.

If you are concerned, act accordingly. If you are not, act accordingly.

It's no problem but I would not leave it unattended in a cheap hotel. I had my sony a7iv with me, no issues. Also buy insurance on it so if it is damaged or stolen you're not out the whole thing.

If you don't keep track of your shit expect to loose it.

I have traveled all over south east Asia and Mexico with expensive travel equipment and never had a problem. Use the same precautions you would in your home country and you will be just fine. Just as likely to get your gear stolen in Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris, or Sydney as in SE Asia. Use common sense and you will have no trouble. Crime is very low in most of SE Asia.

Honestly, if it's on you, your risk is pretty low as long as you don't go to super sketchy places. Wear it cross body or around your neck (not hanging off one shoulder) to eliminate the risk of a snatch and grab. SEA is actually pretty low risk if you're slightly careful.

You're at serious risk of losing your camera. Don't leave it unattended ANYWHERE. If you leave a hotel and the dishonest staff member sees you don't have it on you, they will text their partner in crime to sneak into your room to grab it. Be prepared to part with it if someone threatens you with violence. The insurance that would actually pay out when your camera gets stolen will probably cost you more than half your camera (buying just 3 months of insurance on an expensive item is like saying "I'm about to do something stupid").

RT - use a generic camera bag, don't give away that it's high end. Check to make sure it's appropriately weather/climate rated for hot, humid environments. Keep a stock looking lens on until you absolutely need to swap a lens, then do so without everyone noticing you have something worth stealing. Don't talk about your nice camera. Don't wander away from tourist areas with it on you - if you see other tourists with cameras, you're doing good. If you're the only one with a camera - GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.
