Hello everyone I'm new to backpacking and hoping to get a couple answers. Wondering if any using a bidet in the wild, do you use filtered water? Like can you just fill from a silt free source, or should you filter it first? Also wondering if anyone uses the bear vault food container is it raccoon proof?
If you boil it, don’t forget to let it cool before using. 😣
Haha for sure! A nice appropriate warm temperature would feel so much better than cold water from the stream.
Awesome! Thank you for the reply!
where are you going? a raccoon probably can’t open a bear vault, but I would suspend my food for sure if I was going anywhere in grizzly country. a raccoon might be able to drag the vault away, they have sticky lil fingers.
I'm going to a conservation park, so lots of people around most probably not great at proper food storage and not feeding the critters
No chance a racoon is opening a bear vault. However they could roll it away if they were smart enough to figure it out.
I use a bear vault, in some US national parks they re required. In these places hanging food either isn't allowed for there aren't trees tall enough for it. You need to place the vault 50-100 yards from camp, downwind if you can. There is always a chance your vault gets moved by a bear but it is made to be slippery on purpose. I like to find a log or rock to put the vault in. They are always in the same spot I've put them, even in thick bear country.
Ok thank you!
It’s also about how many pathogens you get exposed to vs whether or not there are any. Squirting stream water on your nethers doesn’t seem much different than swimming in that same body of water. And people rarely become ill from swimming. It’s more about ingesting large amounts of the water. Some people on fkt hikes will drink unfiltered water and then go to the hospital for treatment if needed after they are done.
Using the bidet you use a little soap too so that would clean you anyway. And use hand sanitizer after. Maybe just filter or boil the water first if you wouldn’t swim in it. Because getting sick in the backcountry where you have to walk your ass out sucks.
Never used a bear vault but I would assume a raccoon can’t get into it if a bear can’t.
