Hello everyone, I have suspected I have had autism for quite a while and I have been told by my parents that I was flagged for it when I was younger but I fell through the cracks as I wasn’t bad in school. Just wondering if anyone has any advice for about what an assessment is like especially for an adult? I am very anxious about it and would appreciate anyone’s input. Thank you!
(I (25afab) had my assessment in Hungary.) At my first appointment we went through a list of questions. My advice for it if you don’t understand the question or not sure if you understand it ask back to clarify it. (For example she asked me if I feel upset and frustrated at the moment and I simply told her I can’t answer it because for me this seems like two different questions. She told me okay and made 2 questions out of it instead of one.) Try not to mask. Wear comfortable clothes because it’s a tiering thing and you want to be comfortable. For me the assessments were emotionally and mentally exhausting (had shutdowns after all 3 appointments). The doctors were super nice. Try to keep in mind that they are there to help you and not to negatively think about you. Some part of the assignment might seem childish (for me those were the ones that help me get comfortable and unmask). If you are uncomfortable with eye contact you don’t have to force yourself. Try to act as authenticity as you can.
Thank you so much for the advice and talking about your experience it’s very kind of you. Yeah eye contact is not easy for me the only person I can do it with is my partner lol. Thank you for the advice about clothes I was thinking I had to dress “smart” and when I do I get uncomfortable. Thank you so much!
You are welcome 😊. If you have more questions hopefully I can answer. Good luck with your assignment.
Was there anything that came up during the appointment that surprised you? It’s ok if the question is too personal and you don’t want to answer. Thank you!
At the second appointment when they asked me to show and explain how I wash my teeth. The personal stuff (first session) didn’t really surprise me (I have been in therapy for years now so I’m used to those kind of questions). They asked about my mental health (current and past ones), if I ever hurt myself (why and how), my relationship with my family.
Thank you for sharing, I get quite anxious (to the point I put off sending emails just asking for a simple task to be done like a few tick boxes to be checked etc) so having information like this is helping me out a lot! Thank you so much!
