Thoughts on Artemis (weir) narrated by Rosario Dawson?
Thoughts on Artemis (weir) narrated by Rosario Dawson?
QuestionI didn't mind that stuff so much in project hail mary because it's a glossed-over optimistic scenario of what mankind would do when faced with imminent extinction
I appreciate him going out of his comfort zone and trying something different with a young woman from a Muslim background, so credit for that.
But yeah unfortunately the result is a sort of overly horny manic pixie dream girl. I found Jazz quite grating and was never really in her corner.
It doesn’t help that the general plot is weaker than the other two books too, for all there were some interesting ideas in there.
Weir is great at writing one self-insert nerd who loves dad jokes dealing with technical problems alone and should never write any other kind of people or situations.
My neck hurts from agreeing so much.
This tickled me. Thank you
Most stories are 'Man Vs' something. man Vs man, Man vs world, even Man vs Self. The conflict is where the story comes from.
AW's writing is unique in that the environments are uniformly artificial, close quarters, and open to serious manipulation by the characters.
The result in The Martian and Project Hail Mary is essentially 'Man Vs Science'.
Artemis is the weakest of his books because he's using characters to drive the plot, instead of the moon itself.
It's still an excellent book, just the lowest of his three. Bronze Medal is still a medal winner.
Well said. I think of Artemis the same way I think of Highlander 2.
Ouch!
Was gonna say that.
Loved the narration, had a hard time not falling asleep on it.
Its main redeeming quality is Rosario herself, but the story is boring until the end, and isn’t as good as the other 2.
I loved it. I thought it was fun and I enjoyed the narration.
Snap, even though it is weaker than the other 2, it's still generally good overall. Much harder to visualise perhaps because of a bigger setting to work in, but I'm not going to knock it.
I loved it. It was a solid “Die Hard on the moon” action thriller.
Most of the criticisms are correct, it's definitely the weakest of his books, but it's also still a very easily digestible read.
I loved it. I wish rosario did more narrations, she killed it
I enjoyed it but it's nothing like the Martian or PHM.
maybe wait for it to come out on DVD.. get it from the library or something.
Dawson is fine.. story is not that good IMO. bottom of the list from him.
Loved it
It was one of the first audiobooks I listened to when I was trying to get into audiobooks, during peak Covid lockdown. I’m glad it was the first book from Andy Weir otherwise my expectations would have been so much higher, and I wouldn’t have liked it as much. I liked Rosario Dawson as narrator, but since it was one of the first audiobooks I’ve listened to just didn’t have much to compare it to.
I thought it was pretty entertaining, minus the lengthy descriptions of welding. Idk why there was so much welding!
I really enjoyed it. The heist concept was fun. I thought it was a lot better than The Martian. I think Project Hail Mary is the best of the three.
I liked it a lot!
Wasn't my favourite but was a perfectly good listen. Rosario Dawson did a good job I thought, the barman character had an... Interesting accent. When I compare it to some of the absolutely excrutiating Sci Fi I have endured recently it was very good.
I had to bail on an AI thriller recently after having to endure a passage where that went (and I paraphrase) "He stared long and hard at her chest because in the future that was ok"
Compared to some of the dross on Audible Artemis is a worthy listen.
I liked it more than I thought I would, but it might have helped that I heard negative reviews beforehand so I wasn't expected it to be The Martian or Project Hell Mary good.
Still an average at best book that is helped a lot from Dawson's narration.
I liked it. I enjoyed Dawson's narration but it is a pretty weak book. I'd get it from the library and not use a credit or pay cash for it.
It is Weirs weakest book but I still enjoyed it! I would still give it a go if you’re tossing it up and enjoyed weirs other works. I don’t remember the narration being being anything noteworthy
I like a good Sci fi and really enjoyed it. But as others have said, it's the weakest of the Weir novels.
I thought it was very boring.. I listened to about 40% of it and put it on the back burner for months before I finished it. I really wanted to like it :(
I liked Rosario Dawson, but I also think I paid the right price for it (free).
Not as good as Weir's other books so far, but still fun and the narration is perfectly fine. Got better on a relisten, perhaps because I didn't have such high expectations.
I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed it
I think it’s definitely the weakest of the three. I think he works best when it is mankind versus nature. I don’t have as much of a problem with Jazz as some do. I was just more interested in the science than the political intrigue.
I love this book and I LOVE Rosario Dawson narrating. Might be my most favorite audiobook narration of all time. I’ve read the Martian and I enjoyed it, but I love love loved this audiobook. I had so much fun. It’s serious while somehow being light-hearted, with some unexpected and wonderfully surprising heartfelt moments, and lots of technical exploration.
Thank you for the recommendation!
It was pretty forgettable
I actually didn’t like Dawson’s narration, but it wasn’t as bad as Wil Wheaton in The Martian.
I liked the story overall but like others have said compare to the others it ranks last.
I read it on Kindle, not the audiobook, but I thought it was absolutely awful.
I found the narration difficult to listen to actually, too much vocal fry.
Definitely not as good as his other books!
The worst of his works
Definitely a miss for me. Didn’t care for it at all.
Preordered it, started it, hated it soo much, (sorry Rosario- not your fault) and returned the book. The dialogue was the worst.
It’s the weakest of Weir’s three books by a long shot. The hard science is nice, but it’s thin. The characters are all unredeemable, making bad decisions only after making inexplicable decisions. Weir is way out of his depth when it comes to world-building with governmental constructs, social conventions, political and business intrigue, and cultural norms.
I compare it to many of the “earth scenes” from Project Hail Mary… The PRC giving away aircraft carriers; Stratt wielding involuntary servitude on a global scale; the pathetically inaccurate courtroom scene; etc,…. It’s just weak writing. Artemis is all of that, as the main story.
Edit: I forgot to add, I was pleasantly surprised by Dawson’s narration. She’ll never go down as one of my favorites, but she did a very good job.
