Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Announcement: Flair test on new posts

Dear members,

Our subreddit has grown steadily over the last few years and some users have questioned the way the subreddit works as a result. One recurring remark concerned the relative repetitiveness of the subjects covered. The moderation team does not currently wish to impose limits on the topics posted and would like to try another way of providing a user experience that takes into account the wishes and desires of users for better filtering of posts.

That's why, for the next two weeks, we want to try out the compulsory use of flairs for all new posts.

While we are aware that some third-party applications, and even reddit itself, can sometimes cause problems with flairs, statistics show that the majority of people posting do so via a computer.

As mentioned above, this is a test and we will take note of any advantages or disadvantages of the method to see if we want to make it permanent or not.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

The moderation team.

Can a foreigner from outside the EU/EAA apply to get a loan to study in Switzerland before coming? and is there any other options for financing their studies? can I find a sponsor?Study

I know this may look like a spam, but it's not

I'm currently living in Egypt, I've finished my studies at an American high school with a GPA of around 3.9 out of 4, but the available universities in Egypt for me are REALLY BAD as educational institutes (bad is the nicest word to describe it)

I speak a lil bit of French (I can finish a B2/C1 level before starting my studies, but I want to make sure that I'm going to travel to Switzerland before actually doing that because it's gonna take a lot of effort)

I've contacted L'EPFL and my documents can allow my to start my studies at L'EPFL by the next year, the problem is basically that I can't even afford the uni fees -around 1600 CHF-

I've thought about getting a scholarship but the EPFL does not offer any scholarships and most scholarships I've found promising are not available for Egyptian students, and I can't find a sponsor that can take care of my financial needs while I'm living in Switzerland (if you can help me to find any chance to get a sponsor that can cover the living fees like rent, food, and transportation, even if he/she is going to ask me to repay a part of those expenses after graduation, I'd be really thankful)

sooooooo, I've calculated my needs and I'd basically need ~5700 CHF for all my years at the Bachelor program, in addition to ~25K CHF for my first 7 or 8 months in Switzerland (I'd need to spend 6 months in Switzerland before applying for a part-time job (even after getting a one I'd need ~700 CHF monthly, and I don't know how I'm gonna cover them but I hope I'd be able to handle it with a 1500 CHF/month) so on average I'd need to secure 30K CHF on arrival to Switzerland.

I've seen the Educaplan website and it seems like a really good chance to get a loan but as I can see, I can't get a loan unless I'm already living in Switzerland, can't I apply before coming to Switzerland? and is there any option out there to finance ? can anyone help me to find a sponsor? any kind of help is really appreciated even if you're gonna ask me to repay it back later on, and I mean ANY KIND, I really need all kinds of help available because I don't wanna waste my potential in a bad university that's not even recognized in Egypt :( and I do really love Switzerland too, if anyone's interested in helping me I'd be really happy if they can personally contact me :)

et merci d'avance.

10 year anniversary trip Travel

Hi! My wife and I are looking at visiting Switzerland for a 7 day trip. There is so much information out there. What would you suggest for an outdoor holiday? We love Hiking, kayaking, fishing, exploring and sight seeing. We would ideally like to be within public transit to and from locations. If that’s even possible.

Can you submit the citizenship application before 10 years are completed?Other/Miscellaneous

Processing time is 1-2 years, so could you submit early to the point where the 10 year requirement is met after processing, or do the 10 years HAVE to be completed before you can even submit?

Interlaken/Grindelwald WeatherTravel

Hey everybody,

Looking to do a solo trip to Switzerland in the first two weeks of September 2024, I really want to visit the Alps. I was wondering what the temperature is at this time of the year there and if its sunny, rainy, etc.

Feedback on 9 Day Switz Itinerary?Travel

Hi! I am planning a 9 full day trip in September for a family of 4 (2 older parents so would like to have ~3 home bases to avoid too much up/packing, however open to suggestions). Would appreciate any feedback on the itinerary. Im a little frazzled and there are so many threads! Thank you in advance!!

Day 1-2: Zurich base (need to stay for 2 days awaiting arrival of full party) Day 3-5: Lucerne base. Day trip to Lauternbrunnen and Mt. Pilatus (latter is questionable/worth it?) Day 6-8: Interlaken base. Day trip to Jungfraujoch and Grindelwald. Day 9: Travel back to Zurich for flight early next morning.

Also thinking of renting a car vs train but open to whatever is quickest given limited time and what's easiest.

Do you need to report wild animal found dead?Everyday life

I went on a walk and say a fawn(baby deer) dead in the middle of the railway. I guess the poor thing chose the worst moment to cross it. My question is, do I need to report it somewhere so they can take care of it? in my country you notify forest rangers, but I'm not sure if this is a thing here.

Best places to network and meet other Finance professionals in Zurich/GenevaWork

Hi everyone - I’m visiting Zurich and Geneva in August and would like to connect with other finance professionals in the area. Whether that is attending certain events, private clubs or simply going to common happy hour spots, I’m open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Car rental or train?Travel

My family of 4 plan to travel to Switzerland in summer 2025. We plan to rent a car and spend about a week driving through the country. However, some have pointed out that travelling by train is the better option. We really enjoy road trips like these and having the flexibility of your own rental car, but I am also learning that some of the more popular tourist sites may not be very accessible by car or that parking may be an issue. Is this correct? Has anyone had a positive experience exploring the country by rental car? Cost considerations aside.

How to calculate parking rates?Travel

Looking at Lauterbrunnen and Täsch, I'm planning on parking for 2 nights (48 hours or less) but over 3 calendar days, and hoping to book online. Do I need to book 3 days of parking or 2? Not sure when the "hourly" vs "daily" rates would kick in; another full day rate if parking past 8 AM from the night before? Danke!

Law advice and opinionsWork

Hello everybody! I was working in switzerland in a hotel and a restaurant since august 2023 and my boss did not pay me and other collegues for the last 3 months. He kicked us out with no money but we gathered enough to hire a lawyer (500CHF each). My boss owns a Volkswagen T5(not registred so no plates on it) and a leased car and thats pretty much it. We all have contracts and our lawyer said that he will win the case. How long does it take for a lawyer to block their bank accounts and to put his hands on the car in order for us to get the money we deserve? I know that that van wont cover much, since in total to 4 of us he owes us about 60k, but I need money for my studies and to pay the krankenkassa. I am really stressed out and I hope that somebody can tell me some useful information. The lawyer said that its not much he can do if they run away from the country and this is the reason I asked how long could it take to take over his bank accounts and/or car.

Thank you very much in advance!

Veterinary Licensing?Work

My wife is a Swiss citizen (living abroad) and a veterinarian licensed in the UK, Ireland, and six U.S. States.

Her current employer is multi-national, with a presence in Switzerland. Should we move there, she would want to be licensed to practice in CH.

Does anyone here have any experience with the licensing process and with reciprocity? I understand that licensing is at the canton level, but my search terms don't seem to be working for finding a good resource on how licensing works, and which site to use for which canton.

Cardiac surgery Geneva Other/Miscellaneous

My father in law is in Montpellier and is having a leak of his tissue aortic valve he had placed 16 years ago in the US. He is Swiss and if his condition worsens, he would like to be transferred to Geneva by his family to have emergency surgery.

Does anyone know an amazing cardio thoracic surgeon in Geneva that can replace a tissue aortic valve?

We are hopeful he can be optimized and sent back to the US for surgery but we need to plan for emergency if needed.

I’m a CVICU nurse and I’m so worried about his care.

Thanks all in advance.

Working in a coffee shop Work

Working in a coffee shop

Hello all,

My girlfriend (eu citizen) wants to join me in Zurich. As profession, she is an HR, but finding a job here, from aboard isn’t easy. So we thought of her starting working in a coffee shop, she ain’t professional, but speaks german fluently and english.

My question for you:

  1. What are the salaries in Zürich for this kind of job without being a profesional barista?
  2. What are your experiences in this?
  3. Any cons besides the transition from an office job to some pshysically work?

Thank all :)

Simplified naturalization for married people Everyday life

Hi all

I am a UK national, and been married to a swiss national for over 5 years now. The requirement for simplified naturalization seems to be 5 years if you live in Switzerland, or 6 years if you are living outside of Switzerland but with strong ties.

In my situation, we have been living 4 years in the UK together, and the past year in Switzerland (so neither here or there).

My question is, and I would be very grateful for your input, what time limit do I now have to work with?! Can I apply now since we have been married for over 5 years, or do I need to wait until we have gotten to a 6 year milestone? Or does the whole thing now resets itself by us moving to Switzerland and we have to wait 5 years before I can apply?

Thank you all for your advice

Who owns rental homes in Switzerland?Everyday life

Who owns the homes that people rent (as tenants)? I understand that it's probably different entities, so I just wonder what rough percentages are.

I apologize if this is not a good discussion, it's just that I couldn't find this info.

Switching jobs with B-permit depending on employers Work

Hi all,

I am currently working full-time in Zurich with a B-permit that is tied to my employer.
I am thinking of switching my job, but I guess my future employer has to apply for my work permit all over again.

I don't want to submit my resignation letter before I'm sure my work permit is ready

What are the best moves should I take?

Should I inform my future employer that I only consider taking the job after the work permit is ready?

Day trip from ZurichTravel

My sister and I are visiting based out of Zurich and tomorrow is our last day! She has a swiss pass for three days and I have a saver day pass. We did Luzerne and Engelberg today. Where is somewhere we should go tomorrow? I wanted to do Grindelwald / Lauterbrunnen but not sure since we would have to pay more for those trains. Any suggestions?!
