Like, for me, I think Highschool dxd had some serious potential, but was ruined by it's genres. fuckin' hate harems and ecchi lmao
What animes do you think wasted its potential?
Question for the peoplePREACH MY FRIEND, PREACH! It's crazy to, I thought 7DS had some serious energy with it.
I was proud to say I liked it before I got older lmao
Bruh im still bothered by how they didnt have Ban learn to let Elaine go. That wouldve been good character development. Really, every sin but escanor got what they wanted.
In Arthurian Legend, Lancelot is the son of Ban and Elaine of Benoic. The 7DS story is actually really good at (roughly) following the actual myths and keeping stuff semi accurate
Same problem I have with the Star Wars franchise, my friend explained the whole plot of sds and it sounds really cool, but they spend so much time getting to the point and rehashing pointless bullshit that I just turn it off
FREAKING. SHIELD HERO.
Oof, season 2 was a draaaaag.
I do think it got a lot better with season 3 though! Even with some stupid moments, it felt as though more effort was put into it overall
Real and based
Sword Art Online... absolutely incredibly well done premise, realistic love story, real tension and risk... only for it to be pushed along far too fast and concluded in half of a season. Everything after that has been a long and painful downhill roll with only a few redeeming moments.
SAO Abridged by SomethingWitty Entertainment is the only way I can watch SAO
Gun game online was awesome, honestly my favorite season
Is that the little pink gun girl, if yes, season 2 is coming later this year or summer releases I believe.
The underworld war in the alicization arc was my favorite arc. It was like getting an AU of the soul society captains from bleach all over again.
Alicization and Mother's Rosario was good. Anything other than that, for me, was meh.
Dragonball Super, i mean its not that bad. But it has to much goku screentime. Let others shine. I mean does he really need to fight kefla after Jiren. Manga did better. Also promise neverland and devil is a part timer.
DBS had an entirely clean slate to do whatever and expand. Instead…we got more frieza and lazily rehashed plot lines. The best word to describe DBS is unfortunately lazy.
Nah don't forget that totally did a fresh and original arc with time trav-...
But at least for the first time we saw an evil version of Gok-....
On second thought, you make valid points. At least the ToP arc had some badass fights and moments for non-Saiyan characters to shine. Honestly think the ToP was Super's best arc by far. Realistically, they were really cooking with the Goku Black arc but skewed it bigtime with mediocre storytelling and straight up awful rushed animation.
Promised Neverland and Berserk come to mind
Also Pokémon comes to mind too. Like its good but too much for children. The Manga was pretty hard core.
Promised Nederland season 1 was solid. But season 2 skipped like 2 arches and squeezed like 3 other arches into 12 episodes or whatever it was.
Berserk Manga is amazing. 1 of the adaptations is decent but its only 1 season
Took too long to find TPN, rip Goldy Pond anime. The manga falls off a bit after grace field and Goldy Pond really picks it back up imo so to see that skipped entirely was just a big FU from the start. I know some people argue Goldy Pond shows the show going against it’s established themes but I think a lot of that evidence can be chocked up to the sort of rushed feeling of the ending arc vs the well crafted Grace Field arc.
It’s so hard to accept that we’re never getting Goldy Pond
There may be hope for TPN someday. One recent example to date would be Blue Exorcist. I never really looked into how season 2 came to be, but the first season was very well received. They could have easily milked it for years with a couple of movie deals. They literally discarded a sure-thing cash cow. lol I just don’t get it
Tokyo Ghoul :(
Looked for this one. Kaneki is such a great character in the manga and then even before re the anime butchered him.
I hated they changed the story from the manga
I liked the premise and the powers, it just kept getting more and more…. torture porny, to the point i was just uncomfortable watching it lol
i hated how they left things out, i preferred reading mangas but i was happy how a friend of mine gave watching anime a try. She ended up watching tokyo ghoul so i excitedly asked her abt it. The version she told me was so different and disappointing :((
Tried watching it recently and just wasn’t doing it for me. Glad I’m not the only one and I hear the show is getting “remastered” I guess? Whatever you want to call it but it could really use it.
The original Hellsing anime since it outpaced the manga and did things like butcher Anderson’s role and character. Good thing Hellsing Ultimate compensated, was canonical, in line with the manga, and led to one of the greatest parodies of all time, which answered the question of what happens when you give Anime Dracula Deadpool’s personality.
BITCHES LOVE CANNONS
TFS Hellsing Abridged is a canon, i don't care what anyone else says. The Crimson Fuckr is real
Original fma for me. Outpaced the manga too
So damn true. Actually amazing dubs from t4s.
Michiko To Hatchen, a single season anime that wrapped up it's story far too quickly. MC is on the run from the police and gangs while lugging around daughter of her love interest, all while forming a parental bond with said child, No magic in the show but plenty of guns blazing and crazy fight sequences with killer background music.
Entire story revolved around MC reuniting with her love interest/ the dad of the kid.
Finally catches up to love interest, and he turns out to be a absolute turd who was never worth pursuing, easily abandons daughter and the show easily could've continued without this guy, every other character was solid and had great depth and swagger. Would love to see this entire show rebooted and rewritten, Not many animes out there where MC is a badass femme fatale that forms a motherly bond with a child, all the while a notorious gang and police are after them. Not to mention the anime was possibly set in South America while most are in Japan/China/America (not 100% sure, may have even been set in Brazil)
I kinda feel like that was the point, kind of like they did with the Ed, Edd and Eddie movie. Still a solid show overall.
I remembered this awesome mini series.
Ninja Kamui within a few episodes. It started off great but quickly went downhill with the addition of mech suits. I’ll still watch, but I won’t be very enthused.
The mech stuff was like a hook to the shnuts
Tokyo ghoul. It’s such a good manga but because of how bad the anime is, a lot of people don’t bother even reading it
I remember fena the pirate princess???? the story had potential but the ending is kinda meh imo
Even before the ending, they wasted the pirate ladies. They could have been a whole arc unto themselves. The whole thing was rushed.
i remember getting invested with the story but then the ending happened and yeah it felt pretty rushed
They quite literally jumped the shark by having the waifu ship all get eaten by sharks suddenly out of nowhere after that scene it was like a complete new show
Yes I liked the show I wanted it to be longer!
Darling in the franxx it started out amazing but the ending hurts my soul
I wanted the BBGs to be Evil AI made by humanity sooo bad but noooo Trigger gotta trigger again.. same enemy as Kill la kill, and gurren laggan. I think only LWA was the only show that outer space wasn't the final fighting ground.
As much as I actually like the anime, Record Of Ragnarok has so much wasted animation potential. I think they did the writing great and characterization but the animation of season 1 can be hard to sit through
Wonder Egg Priority, hands down
Rosario + Vampire
If it had been faithful to the manga, it would’ve been both one of the best and most popular series of the time
Tokyo Ghoul season 2 had a horrible quality drop. I stopped watching on episode 2.
Gleipnir
Tokyo ghoul
Deadman Wonderland. It promised us cool and creative survival games, only to turn into generic underground tournament where the fights were all glorified philosophical arguments that concluded after one or two moves were exchanged. Especially the final fight. Right when I thought the real fight was finally getting started, Uber-Monk then basically got oneshotted.
I massively agree with you on DxD. It's literally my least favorite series of all time, solely because Issei takes a super interesting world with really neat ideas and a cool power system, and fucks the entire thing up by being so horny that the show doesn't get to explore any of the ideas it laid out. If Issei was cut from the show, I don't doubt that it would jump from a 2/10 to at least a 7/10.
Terrible take. 0/10.
Currently watching through dxd and I gotta disagree. Would it be a decently entertaining show without the Percy humor? Sure, but at best it would just be ok. Idk about the Japanese dub but the American is so funny to me, it really makes it that much more appealing cuz I know imma laugh every episode
Dragon Ball Super & GT
I know I’ll get downvoted for this but the anime are equal in how much they both drop the ball.
GT is the Goku show while Super is the Goku and Vegeta show. GT handles the old characters better showing everybody in their completed character arcs with how they would likely be post Z; but then they go on to waste the next generation of characters like Trunks, Goten, Pan and Uub. On the other hand Super can’t use the next generation as it’s nonsensically set in what’s supposed to be a period of peace (just ignore all the violence I guess). Here they flanderize Goku and regress characters like Vegeta and Gohan.
They both have bad 1st arcs (although with Super you could get around this by watching the movie although this could be seen as a negative as the shows first two arcs are just poorly animated movies).
Buu is outright a broken character, this wasn’t a problem when the series ended with Z but needs an answer once the story unexpectedly continues. In GT they have him merge with Uub which I thought was a great solution as it gives Uub all the power without the OP regeneration. Except Uub is then instantly 1 shot and never used again. Supers answer to Buu being too strong to use is to just always have him sleeping.
The list could go on but the point is made.
Saint Seiya Lost Canvas
Negima! Magister Negi Magi. I didn’t care much for the eechi aspects, but really liked the other parts
I came here to say exactly this. The manga was so amazing and the anime wasnt even close to what it should have been. Manga negi is so absolutely broken also that he should be in the conversation of goku vs saitama as strongest character. But the anime was just so awful and ended before the story even began. Its tragic.
problem children are coming from another world aren't they could have been a dull length anime and it would have been awesome but instead it was basically just used as a trailer for the novel
Hajime no ippo. It had a good run. But as time went on it just became more and more supernatural instead of boxing. And also the story just keeps running around in circles. There is only so many ways a boxer can improve before they get beat again, over and over again, improve and then get beat over and over again. This style of writing works perfect for shonen, but when we're talking about a real sport like boxing it's not very realistic. It used to be a pretty realistic and relatable anime but now it's just filled with over the top stuff and way too big over exaggerations. Like, when people say "I'm going to take him to the ocean floor" it doesn't LITERALLY mean that you'll be taking your opponent to the bottom of the ocean floor in the middle of a match. And when we say "he fights like an animal" it doesn't mean that the boxers should LITERALLY manifest an animal's physical appearance and stuff.
To each their own, I like Ippo.
So the reason you stopped liking it is because of imagery and metaphors? Yeah idk about this one chief Hajome no Ippo is pretty peak.
Do you… do you think those things were literally happening in the ring? The ocean floor bit from the Shimabukuro fight was visual metaphor to the fact that they’re both fishermen, and that Ippo was burning through so much oxygen in the exchanges that he couldn’t breathe. Shimabukuro didn’t literally bring him down to the bottom of the ocean.
And the “a person imagines scary animal imagery because their opponent is putting a ton of pressure on them” moments are a staple of all visual art, and they’re always pretty great tbh. They help break up what could be pretty generic boxing imagery with something fresh that still contributes to the story
So idk if you’ve ever watched any other sports anime, but they’re all pretty much like that. Run With The Wind gets a pass imo, but they’re all super exaggerated. It’s anime lol. Ever try watching baseball or golf? Totally boring
Rising of the Shield Hero, first season is great, has minimal fan service, mostly unique powers, and awesome revenge story but once to second season the revenge is over and only leaves main story which is.....idk what the story is, it's something about fighting to stop waves of monsters.
Was one of my first animes, and the powers were the coolest power systems I had seen, so it was my number 1 for a while until I faced the reality that it had become generic. Taught me a great lesson, lower your expectations cuz anime usually finds a way to self sabotage their good premise with either fan service(FireForce) or unoriginal stories (all the reincarnated, isekai, reborn, cheat powers, harem, etc animes that are only ever able to be guilty pleasures)
DxD, promised neverland, Tokyo ghoul, world trigger
SAO Fr
Ninja Kamui. First few episodes where hype with hand drawn fights then they become cgi super suit fights. The fights weren’t bad, just disappointing given what he’s had gotten previously
Naruto, JJK(yikes), ERASED, familiar of zero, danmachi, mirai nikki, charlotte, Most of SAO, shield hero, blue exorcist, Seven deadly sins, ao haru ride, demon slayer, kiznaiver, bnha, shakugan no shana, nisekoi all huge wastes of potential
Sword Art Online
I've always said that everything after Aincrad never felt nearly as compelling. The series kicked off with a GLOBAL event where THOUSANDS of people had their consciousness trapped for YEARS.
Then it was followed up with:
- One girl being held hostage
- A serial killer with a gimmicky M.O.
- A strong player who is just a terminally ill girl
- A.I. people who don't realize that they're A.I.
My Hero Academia fell off so hard imo. Season 1-4 had an amazing set up for actually interesting problems about society and they did basically nothing with it and had Shigaraki taken over by AFO which feels incredibly lame. AFO was also incredibly badass when we first saw him and after he got out of prison he's just been so blandly evil that it's not even interesting to watch any more.
The entire Vigilante arc also feels random as hell. Like it didn't feel like there was a true build up with the themes. It felt like they went "oh we need a sad arc after bad stuff happened" and tossed this together last minute.
The ones Netflix produced that appear to be made on 1997's Macromedia Flash
Tokyo ghoul stands at the top for missed potential imo. The source material is tremendously amazing.
BNA (Brand New Animal) had a wonderful premise but the middle and end felt rushed and nearly nonsensical. Definitely needed another season or two for build up
Boruto
Why did they do the original characters from Naruto so dirty in that anime/ manga?!
My Hero Academia - never developed its female leads.
My Hero Academia. There’s just so much to unpack here, from the many many quirks that are just unoriginal or stolen from other shows, to the plain unlikable cast, to the show literally forgetting about its themes for the first five seasons… I kid you not, I quite literally started writing a plot similar to MHA solely out of spite due to how much all of this worldbuilding and setting was wasted
You almost had me til “quirks steal from other shows”
That’s not a thing
They can be similar in some respect
But no series has a patent super powers
Jujutsu kaisen. One of the main trio wasted all of their potential. This singular man wasting that potential accounts for more than the rest of fiction. I am referring to Bumgumi Fushiguro
Record of Ragnarok, series well known for its over the top fights and characters. Could’ve been amazing if it had actual animations and wasn’t turned into a fucking slideshows
Black Clover had so much potential and the author just keeps lowering my expectations.
It all fell down after the Spade Kingdom infiltration arc. Although even before it, the author could've made better writing decisions.
Gangsta wasted its potential by adding the exterminators when the story was already pretty set with high class indivuals. The twilights hadnt been fleshed out enough. The city was getting lively like durarara. It had high potential. But you know studios when there not enough money they just suicide the series
Real.
Fucking loved Gangster to.
Ocs and everything man
Wonder egg priority, ninja kamui
Liar Liar
Such a cool and interesting plot ruined by being overly complicated and not being explained well
Grimgar Ash and Blood. Its an iksekai but none of the characters remember their past lives. I never read the Manga so I don't know if that changes but I really dug the anime. Only got 1 season so there isn't much conclusion to anything.
Fire force because tamaki
It's not that it wasted its potential, just that Tensura could have been so much better if it stuck to the novels more
But sword art online especially, they should've done it floor by floor for aincrad
Fire Force. The amount of fan service has ruined genuinely awesome scenes. Intense fight where comrades could die just to be cheapened by girl constantly falling tits first into a bad guy.
I like the concept of Rent A Girlfriend... Oh well.
Summoned to another world for a second time.
Had the potential to be a great isekai. Had a fun setting and fun characters.
What went wrong?
What was blatantly meant to be a 24 episode+ series had it's story condensed down to like 12. What were definitely supposed to be the big fights were shortened down to a few minutes instead of the full episode length that you'd expect.
Basically it was ruined by them trying to do a 24 episode plot in 12 episodes.
Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon.
The anime basically cuts 60% of each novel and really butchered the name.
Piano in the Forest. Loved season 1 but season 2 was a powerpoint slideshow.
shield hero 😭 the first episode was so fucking good and then it gradually got worse and worse
Adventurers who lost faith in humanity will save the world or something like that. Felt great until that jumping man or whatever it was called showed up.
Jujutsu Kaisen. I love the story and characters but man the story writing is so poorly done, no sense of direction, i have truly never been so disappointed in an anime. It’s carried by its incredible animation. The story had great potential but as I said, it just simply lost direction. I still watch it and read it always but still find those aspects very disappointing and people seem to be absolutely blinded by the attractive characters. Just my 2 cents.
Drifters, idk what they are thinking at this point.
The Devil is a Part-Timer! Season 2 Was NOT Worth the Wait.
Every anime that wasn’t good. If a specific one, Redo of healer if it was more competently written and had the MC just suppress the princess actual self replacing her with a servant while making the suppressed personality watch as he violates her body and uses her to destroy her own kingdom then it would’ve possibly been an actually good revenge anime.
Also, dxd isn’t wasted potential. That’s just you not liking a certain genre. As a whole it succeeded at what it wanted to do and is now one of the most popular exchis.
Twin Star exorcists
More my time than potential but if one piece had paced it’s episodes better it would be a lot more fun to watch, I often find myself watching about 1/2 of any episode because of all the recaps and boring parts because each episode is 1 chapter in the manga, one piece is a lot of fun but, jesus, can’t they make it like 2 chapters an episode.
Gurren Lagann by killing off Kamina
Plunderer had the same reason. MC is a pervert and has a harem. Man the side character Jail is better that guy. He should had been the MC
Zatchbell
I feel like boruto could been good.
If it didn't have boruto in it at all, and focused on naruto's generation and him becoming homage and doing crazy stuff
Dead-Man WonderLand felt like they could have expanded upon the story
I gotta say danganrompa. Don’t get me wrong I really enjoyed it and I know it’s basically just the game, the tv show. But I feel like it got really rushed at the end.
Claymore for it's last two episodes.
Darling in the Franxx I really really wanted the BBGs to be something Humanity made(rouge AI) and not... Studio Trigger's favorite villains origin.
Soul eaters final battle was underwhelming for the anime. The manga did a much better job.
Chobits manga was worse than the anime.
Shakugan no Shana season 2 ending made me drop the series. MC-kun and super special magical mcguffian McGee midnight lost child had more BS personalities/souls/powers than the millennium ring... Wait it is the millennium ring!
TMoHS ... Endless eight.
I think there was a clockwork world one as well but it got dropped.
.hack// legend of twilight. Just skip this one, the other .hack series are better.
7th time I became the villainess. I so wanted a mentally 35ish year old woman who traveled the world and had multiple 5 year jobs to be more intelligent and mature than what we got.
Unrivalled. And everyone clapped the anime(happens at least twice). MC did have a shitty life but then literally gets handed world breaking stuff. And then has insta rizz after his glow-up. I appreciate what first best girl did for him since she witnessed his character strengths before the glow up. The harem is more impressive than him in terms of character qualities especially the other world girls.
Harem in dungeon. I actually like the progress the MC is making with discovering the actual mechanics of the world and how the natives have scientifically hypothesized what they are and got really close without blatant user Manuel/guide screens. It does get sidelined a bit and we won't get a second season where we learn some races need a daily or weekly consumption of certain foods.
Promised Neverland 😔
A very underrated anime. Kotaura-san
Honestly all the episodes are good and most of the characters are likeable but the love interest and grandpa are infuriating. I forgot most of what the love interest did but he’s just a massive weirdo perv. And with the grandpa, he’s no better. The first episode makes you think he’s a good grandpa but then you get to the episode where kotaura visits him and HES CREEPING UP ON HIS GRANDDAUGHTER?? HE GETS TURNED ON WHEN HIS GRANDDAUGHTER SITS IN HIS LAP? And there was a bit where the love interest and grandpa had to dig a huge hole for a pool I think. And their motivation WAS SEEING KOTAURA IN A SWIMSUIT. A GRANDPAS MOTIVATION TO DO UNSTOPPABLE LABOUR WAS TO SEE HIS CHILDLOOKING HIGH SCHOOLER GRANDDAUGHTER IN A BIKINI. Honestly I would keep the love interest in if it means killing off the grandpa. Even the fucking bully was 100x more likeable than that old hobo (to be fair, the bully did get redeemed halfway through and that’s the only part where she’s likeable BUT STILL)
Actually I just fucking realized the worst part. Kotaura can read minds. She has to read the mind of her grandfather perving on her. That’s just so scary oh my god??
High school of the dead. If they focused more on the zombies and survival and less on matrix bullet dodging boobs it could’ve been cool.
Also thought the first episode or two of sword art online had great potential… then it time skipped to him living with the girl and the rest is history.
World trigger its such a unique concept that never gets fleshed out I love it so much but it starts to feel hollow after awhile I'm not even sure it will finish proper
Ranma 1/2 - could have been a cool exploration about gender and sex as concepts, as well as intersexual dynamics. Literally a character that can change sex at will, and sometimes as a result of accident. Instead, just played for harem hijinks.
Also Familiar of Zero because the MC’s power is actually really cool - the ability to instantly become an expert in any weapon, but only while touching it? Cool. Lot you can do with that. But again, dumb harem show.
7 deadly sins to 7 deadly frames, that shit fell off catastrophically, it needs to be researched and studied for science
Platinum end. It is created by Ohba Tsugumi and Obata Takeshi - the authors of Death Note. But I feel that PE really falls short of my expectations
Naruto had so much potential to be better if Kishimoto was better at writing side characters and if almost every female character wasn’t almost the same person
Kokoro Connect. Damn shame.
Promised Neverland
Soul Eater
Great Pretender
Good Night World, it's first half (6 episodes) has a really good premise. Then afterwards they pull a complete 180 in characters and what's happening, then making it convoluted/confusing mess. What was interesting in plot they basically abandoned.
Also blue exorcist, what they did between season 1 and 2 felt so weird. To recap if no one knows, season 1 they had a ending the was different from the manga and what not. A full stop ending. Season 2 it picks up on like episode 16 or so from season 1 while 17-24 are non cannon. Someone that's watching it anime only like me immediately got confused starting season 2 as it's hard to make a distinction what was cannon from season 1 and what wasn't. So instead of trying I just stopped watching and let the ending of season 1 be the ending.
Shingeki no Bahamut...I liked the premise and thought FMC was going to help liberate the demons (who are not evil) yet she falls for the dude that enslaved them 🙄
Soul Eater
Guin Saga, it needs to be finish
GATE...not steins gate (FKN MASTERPIECE)
I'm scared tower of god will be this way. The first season has captured my imagination for years, the music, the visuals, the mystery... Gahhhh. Please no.
Aldnoah.Zero, good premise and idea, GREAT OST, good start but became a walkthrough for shitty main character. There were also a lot of loopholes happening as it goes on. The strong characters were easily defeated just to make mc stand out. The antagonist have a lot more dimensions than other characters. I watched it til the end bcs antagonist is interesting.
Jujutsu kaisen
Ninja Kamui as soon as it added the mechs it’s like the special spark of the show just went out
Angel tales.
Some lucky guy manages to own/help every single zodiac animal(all female) and when they died they became angels and came down to earth to take care of him.
Second season comes and they introduce ntr with 4 of them being forcefully married to the 4 legendary creatures. (Tiger , Phoenix, genbu, dragon).
The 4 guys are alive but they were wed to literal angels. I guess that is how it works lol. After the weddings they run away from their husbands and come back but there was no 3rd season.
Solo leveling I don’t believe the show has completely wasted its potential but as more seasons come out it’s gonna get worse and worse if they don’t change
As a person who read the manwha the anime is a washed down version of the great story. With the introduction of characters that have nothing to do with season one(which I believe they did for fan service), them taking of the comedy and trying to make the mc more serious and cool which made it unbearable to watch without cringing, and this is just a personal problem I have with the show but the dub is ass. I watch dub for the convenience of not having to read the subtitles and this is one of the worst dubs I’ve watched in recent times. All big named voice actors which in my opinion made the show more generic and the dialogue was so horrible I had to force myself to finish the season. After watching it I watched mashle and the different was night and day. Mashle had great dub voice actors and the dialogue was amazing compared to solo leveling and solo leveling has a bigger budget(I assume). The fight in ep 6 I think between the mc and the six hunters, when he started to talk about the system had me dying on how horrible the dialogue was and cringe. To me this is an attempt of them trying to make the mc more “edgy” and “cool” but it falls flat on it face without the comedy of the characters to balance it out and cut the cringe. As a first timer who’s never heard of the manwha it’s ok but as an reader this is a slip in the face of how they fucked this show up
slime
I have a lot, some were ruined by their adaptations, like Tokyo Ghoul, The Promised Neverland, etc etc.
Some are like Highschool DxD for you, which I completely agree with, great potential but something ruins the whole thing, another I'd say like that is Devils Line, I really enjoyed the idea sorta, but the whole thing made me really uncomfortable watching....
Another kind would be the ones what ruined themselves had a great start but later on both manga and anime something just make it... no.... Vampire Knight is one of the worst imo for that, Seven Deadly Sins as well, Oshi No Ko in the manga too.
The some more are probably the best, but they are ones that are still alright, but some things changing could make it better, Fairy Tail is a big one with the unnecessary fan service as well as the end to the first series and some missed opportunities, Fire Force and Soul Eater as well with unnecessary fan service (the anime ending to Soul Eater too).
Some people get really annoyed with filler, so Boruto, Bleach, Naruto, etc etc could be considered wasted potential in anime terms.
I personally can handle quite a bit, I'd say the second and third kind I mentioned are the only ones I genuinely think are wasted potential, while the others certainly have some or quite a lot, I so wish they went a different route with some of them.
To me being Ecchi is no excuse.
Prison school was an absolute master piece failed by a creator who resented their own creation :(
Rising of shield hero. S1 changed the story pacing and improved character development—Raphtalia is my favorite anime character.
Then s2 pooped the bed. Instead of telling character stories first and showing action second, s2 is only action with the briefest of character development—Eclair only gets a few lines. Cramming an arc in 6 is episodes is brainless and the filler last episode made me even more pissed.
S3 is better, but it’s now just the show mirrors any cliche sword/magic anime.
SAO.
Had me hooked up until the whole cabin scene where they became "parents" to the fairy girl. Shits cringe.
Deadman Wonderland, the anime adaptation RUINED the story
Boruto: Naruto next generation. I’m sure most of the original Naruto fan base who grew up with Naruto hates Boruto except for a small part of them
Kill la Kill. The anime itself was awesome. But it did end. Wasted potential if you ask me. Most everybody else is complaining about the anime doing exactly what it was going to do. So for me Kill la Kill is a better choice as it had potential to go far.
Berserk, no one likes CGI in anime bro 🤦🏾♂️. Studio eclypse finna do us right though.
HunterxHunter, Anime was amazing but i kind of hated the ending. How do you kill off the fkin main character of the show? The Dark continent is such a good idea its sad it will never be animated
For me Hero academia (s2 and s3 is far superior than current) and jobless reincarnation (loss in quality of artwork and story)
Re:zero lost its magic too.
Mushoku Tensei fan service ruined it
Well idk if this really qualifies as wasting it's potential, but i think they coulda kept goin with hunter x hunter. How it ended kinda set it up perfectly for a whole new arc if they wanted.
Tokyo. Ghoul.
Taboo Tattoo.
It was a really fun concept, and the MC had a crazy ability but was still learning to control it. The final fight of the Anime had the MC doing basically nothing iirc.
I personally think that they planned it a little too far out, or at least they were waiting to have some big character defining moment, but they waited too long.
But I haven't watched it in like 4 years.
Let’s get this one out of the way: No Game No Life. Such a good anime it’s a shame we will never get anymore than season 1.
Secondly, and this is gonna be a weird entry, it soul eater. The anime itself was great, fantastic even, but there is so much more story in the form of manga that I’m afraid we will never see realized in animation. And dare I say that the stuff yet to be animated is even better than the story we got.
My hero
Inuyasha
7 deadly sins
Ninja Kamui
Devil is part timer (funny and cool 1st season but massively fell off for me)
Pokemon (succeeded making a franchise but man the way they told story with ash at times just ugh looking at you Best Wishes 👀)
Sheild Hero
Db super (not because of goku hate train i love him tbh but that besides moros and broly black frieza and cell again are just bruh wtf are we even doing here anymore when you got a multiverse to travel)
Dragon maid
Phantom: Requiem of a Phantom
The final act of that series (Act 3) was absolutely horrific and terrible
Berserk, yes the original is amazing but they butcher it HORRIBLY with the newer seasons. I don’t consider them apart of the berserk series honestly but there was insane potential there.
Tron
Because they cancelled an amazing project. I refuse to believe that show wasn’t or wouldn’t have had a psycho cult following like all the other classic.
Not that fairytale was bad or anything but I felt the fight with zeref and fight with acnologia were let downs
Akashik Records. It’s basically a bad magic high school/loli harem show. There was a scene in one of the first episodes where the protag, a teacher at the school, shows how changing the way you say the incantation for each spell can change their effects. Say it with one cadence and the firebolt flies straight, say it a different way and it veers to the left, like this and it spins in a circle, stuff like that. It was a really cool concept and could have been the backbone behind a really interesting show about discovering new and interesting ways of using magic. But no. It’s a loli harem show.
Definitely Cyberpunk.
It was damn near perfect, but no sequel nor are there any plans for one.
Yasuke. My first time learning about a real life African Samurai was watered down to a sci Fi fantasy fan fiction
Arifureta: from commonplace to world's strongest
Begins like a lighthearted Isekai. Then the MC gets betrayed and left for dead at the bottom of a dungeon by a classmate who is jealous of him. He ends up surviving in a brutal fashion after losing an arm by a monster by eating monsters and abusing a regen pool by letting it heal him when he gets poisoned from monster meat. He starts to change, gain some monster abilities and goes from being a light hearted guy to a ruthless killer. He fights to the bottom of the dungeon and meets a vampiress who was similarly betrayed. The two of them clear the dungeon and go to the surface, ready to get revenge on those that betrayed them and...
The MC meets a bunch of chicks he fucks and he gets a cool bike and robot arm and everything thinks he's so cool and all the guys are jealous of his army of hot women that he gets to fuck and literally none of the women object to just being part of the harem including his childhood friend and his fucking teacher.
Yeeeeah it turns into trash harem anime. Had the making of a badass revenge plot and then becomes the hottest of garbage imaginable. It had SO much potential. I will never forgive the author for this.
High-school of the Dead immediately comes to mind.
AoT. It had good characters and decent world building with a strong main theme but it all built up to a worse version of the zero requiem from Code Geass, which honestly is just a better version if AoT in several ways. Eerie how similar those two shows are, AoT author was definitely looking over at the other guys test
Tokyo Ghoul, was such a good manga. But the anime was absolutely horrible.
The slime anime. Loved the first two seasons but the most recent one is very slow paced. Some anime’s know how to make even speeches suspenseful and engaging but this one doesn’t. I understand it’s world building and they’re trying to build their own country but make something in the half hour long talkfest worth the watch.
Rosario + Vampire. The manga is soooooooooo good, even if there's a bit too much fanservice for my taste. the show is practically ALL fanservice
I read this as “animals” and was looking forward to seeing a list of menacing looking animals that are actually really blobs of goofiness
Tokyo Ghoul. I never read the manga, so I enjoyed the anime. But from what I heard the anime, is trash compared to the manga. But season 2 of the anime was dog water.
The Irregular at Magic High School going hard on the incest side plot makes it unwatchable for me.
I don’t think dxd is bad. I mean you stated that you dislike two of the prominent genres. I hate drama genre but for me to say clanad or I want to eat your pancreas is wasted potentiometer or bad is silly because I don’t like it based on the genre, not the things that make it a good series/movie.
fairy tail, if you look at the early concepts, the story could have actually been great. but mashima is too scared to kill off anyone and thus the cliches repeat over and over again. for example Erza had an amazon look in her concept art, before she turned into essentially jellal simp. early characters also had more distinct traits before just becoming mirrors of each other with a change of tint
If you hate ecchi harems, why did you watch an ecchi harem?
Promised neverland
Darker than Black. Season two was awful.
Claymore. The series ramps up into this really awesome premise and then it just ends lol.
The Promised Neverland
Naruto started strong then went magical Uchiha land and I was over it
Honestly, anything produced by netflix. Idk about other streaming services, but netflix produced anime allways drops the ball. Have this amazing first season (tres manos for example) then nothing, just one season and a cliffhanger. The animation is subpar too, looking like it skips every other frame. Records of ragnorok is the biggest offender, and should have been given to a different animation studio
Soul Eater
Yuyu haksuho ended because the writer needed a break from too much crunch. Last season was super rushed out and it limped to the end :(
Blue exorcist. Definitely Blue exorcist. First arc got animated back in 2011. Didn’t get a second arc till 2017 and they had to rework the second arc to fill it with the actual source material from the manga because during the first arc, they had actually run out of source material during that time so the shows’s creators had to come up with their own story to fill the rest of the first arc so moving onto the second arc, you feel like you’re right back at square one lmfao with the character developments and all. And then a whole 7 more years later, they’ve just gotten to animating a third arc. From the span of 2011-2024 , a total of 13 years, we’ve only got three arcs. And the manga had so much source material to build off of by then. So much wasted time. It could have set itself up to be apart of the “elite” group of series such as JJK, one piece, Naruto, Black clover.
Imma be honest, for me, it's Demon Slayer. It has amazing music, beautiful animation, and some characters with amazing physical designs. It's just ruined by Tanjiro and Nezuko being pretty boring, Zenitsu being himself, characters not getting much development, and each death being brought on by a 5-10 minute flashback. Rengoku comes to mind with all of this. He has a fun personality, beautiful design, and a cool fight. He just gets taken out too early for him to get any real development, he goes from, "I want you and your sister dead, but I won't because master said nuh uh" to "You guys are my bestest buddies and should stay in the corps!" Also, don't use Rengoku's explanation of "I watched her shed blood" but another Hashira protecting her wasn't enough, nor was her fighting a lower moon and other demons.
This was my TED talk
Sing Yesterday For Me has such a cool atmosphere and even a great first ep. Sadly it gets ruined by its character writing.
Highschool of the Dead. Most well-known for the fanservice, which is the most prominent but least good aspect of the series. Cut it, and you have the makings of a solid zombie story.
MHA. It was doing so good making everyone important. Then they went and just made Deku, Bakugo, and Shoto just OP to the point that nobody really matters anymore. Atleast nobody from the class anymore. Aizawa is still good but he's just "support" now fighting Shigaraki. Endeavor was supposed to be the next best thing to AllMight but even now, he's below the 3 main kid heroes. The show did good not just making Deku the chosen one but low and behold, he became the chosen one.
Danmachi got so screwed over, so much of the story was skipped and cut, and so much filler added
Kingdom Hearts definitely! That's if we are talking about video game anime
AOT Season 4 (obvs) but also…
Future Diary. Everything was there for it be amazing but it fell apart by the end.
Accel World is one that didn’t get a chance to fulfill its potential. I actually enjoyed the premise more than SAO. Not sure why it didn’t catch on but I heard people didn’t like that the lead player looked like Cartman and not someone like Kirito.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Tokyo ghoul
Beelzebub and Code:Breaker we’re amazing mangas, but the animes never went anywhere.
Blood Blockade Battlefront. A highly loved anime that could’ve fleshed out another great season if they just saved a villain.
Gonna get hate for this but.. Solo leveling has the worst intro and ending credit scene I ever seen
Ninja Kamui, while I still really like it, it could've stayed peak. Now id say it started at a 9/10 or 10/10 and dropped to a 6 or 7/10. Still worth watching though
"The Rising of the Shield Hero" had an amazing start, but after reaching episode 12, everything in ghe entire anime went downhill. His character was amazing and unique compared to most but after obtaining the "RAGE SHIELD", I dropped it, he was no longer reliant on another person to kill the enemy.
Also, the entire premise of the show was horrible from the start, when you play an MMORPG, what role do you want to have most experience the game? The tank!
Sword art online
Tokyo Ghoul
Fullmetal Alchemist 2003. Great anime but it stopped being truly intimidating with its atmosphere after Hughes. Don't get me wrong, I still felt uneasy but a rewatch knowing that almost everyone is safe isn't the same
high school dxd was perfect but if it went differently i wouldnt have been mad
Not sure if this counts but I can’t understand for the life of me why there is not a full anime series of Berserk. If done right it could have potential to be one of the best.
Maybe there’s a reason they haven’t done it?
Seven deadly sins. Season 1 was amazing, minus the excessive pervy jokes, which technically have a reasonable explanation, but since you don't ever get that explanation till like season 3, it's not really excusable, and even still, it's weird.
Even ignoring the animation problem in season 3, I read it as a manga before that season even came out. The characters are all fantastic, but the story really falls off the further it goes, and a lot of awesome characters get left in the dust as useless as the power scaling spikes to high hell, and since they can't help in the battles, they just get ignored. They don't even die, they are just left out of the story, no more character interactions for you!
