And why will I not just go when I first realize I need to go? I figured making this post counts as 1 thing. I don't think I'll manage to do the dishes because running water.
I need to pee. How many things will I do / how long before I eventually go upstairs to the bathroom?
General Question/DiscussionIf I get up to pee, then I am up and will need to do The Thing I'm supposed to be doing. While I'm sitting here in the void between tasks, I am safe from the obligations. Being a bit uncomfortable physically is a small price to pay for not having to do The Thing.
This is so relatable! I'm brand new to this sub, just now coming to some realizations about myself and ADHD (in my 30's). This is an ADHD thing?? I feel like I'm saying that about every comment I read.
This is a fair point, is this just something that everyone does?
No idea. I only know it's something I do - but it seems like a lot of people relate; although people in this sub aren't representative of the general population, so all I know is that it's common in people with ADHD; I have no idea if it's common otherwise!
Welcome to ADHD 😂
Hahaha :) I actually scheduled an appointment with a psychiatrist about this next week. It would explain so much.
My brain does this but for some reason it also convinces me that getting up to pee is severely wasting my time
It is a waste of time
Pretty much exactly why I'll not pee (or eat an easy to get snack, or not get a new drink) when I first realize I should and put it off until critically uncomfortable 😅
omg The Void please tell me how do we break free from it, and how can we avoid it altogether 😭 it IS comfortable and safe, and I hate it lol
…if you don’t leave my brain right now…!!!
I'm not sure how many tasks but if you're like me you won't go until you're dancing about it.
I'd kill for a main floor bathroom! I swear the only reason I go at work is to get away from my desk and just sit somewhere quiet for a minute or two. Might as well pee while I'm there!
It's been 12 minutes... how you doing?
I got up and went outside for a smoke. Gravity kicked in and I finally went. Then I cleaned up the kitchen.
I always force myself to pee before I toke.
It should be because the toke is the reward… but it’s really because I might piss myself if I cough.
You made me snort laugh! And I didn't pee myself!
I used to be like that, but now that I'm in my 40s if I don't pee when I need to pee, I leak. Getting older sucks.
Yeah, just south of 60 here. I'm noticing I can't put it off as long as I used to.
Mid 40s here. I just grab my crotch and run like a fool. Also, it's weird to reflexively grab your crotch when you cough or sneeze, so I'm glad I work from home now.
(I'm exaggerating a bit. I don't ALWAYS grab myself, but let's be real. Kids and a lack of estrogen do not for a strong bladder make. 😂 I never understood my mother's fixation on Kegels until now!)
TMI sorry, but I sneezed mid pee when I had been putting off going to the loo for far too long so it was a proper mammoth wee...I bloody well flooded my bathroom floor, soaked the back of my legs, and still had to finish weeing before I could start clean up.
I have pretty good bladder control for almost 40 and kid but that time it really did get away from me and my bathroom suffered 😂
That's hysterical! You poor thing, but I'm still dying laughing
Same! In the last few years I haven't been able to hold it like I used to!
I used to get UTIs frequently. It was bad enough that I saw a urologist at one point, who told me that for every half hour you hold urine, the bacteria in your bladder DOUBLES. Don’t hold it when you have to go, please!!
Woah! Did not know this. That explains so much.
Yes, E. coli can double itself in 20 minutes. The bastards.
i really hope i remember this because damn
Omigod, the pee thing is ADHD too? Is any of my personality specific to me?
Nope. Also I feel like everyone I meet is a version of a person I know. We’re all just “types” of people 😂
Don't forget to check the mail, the weather and try to figure out the name of some actress on IMDB.
This is the daily game my friend
4.5. You will start the 4th thing and something else will distract you.
My mum actually took me to the urologist when I was younger due to me only peeing 3 times a day (morning, after school and before bed) there was nothing medically wrong I was just too lazy/forgot to pee. (And they say I had no signs of ADHD as a child!)
Even now I’m terrible for it and will regularly go 2 or 3 hours without peeing after first getting the single to go. Unfortunately I’m getting more pain now when I do but so hard to go for a pee.
I once started a story with "Okay, so you know how sometimes you have to pee but you don't go? Well--" And immediately my non-ADHD husband was like "Uhh, NO," but our ADHD friend just nodded knowingly. And that's how I learned that normies just get up and go pee. Crazy, right?!
Peeing and getting gas are the worst.
It's three hours later.
Did you pee yet?
This is how I have severe scarring to my kidneys and was hospitalised many times. I might need a transplant someday.
take it from me, don't procrastinate peeing, go pee
Just peed after reading this, thank you! Hope you're OKx
I’ve been binging The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (and scrolling Reddit) and had to pee for the last 3 hours
Soooo I recently saw an explanation that made so much sense! It's our extreme demand avoidance!!! We perceive our body's needs as demands and choose to ignore them>< It's just crazyyy how deep this goes, I just can't believe my brain sometimes. Like imagine having a manager that wouldn't let you pee until you're done with a job? We're quite totalitarian towards ourselves><
But peeing is a reward for not laziness
Get up to pee.
Oh yeah let me let the dogs out the back door to pee too.
Since I’m back here …
Ohhh let me start the dryer.
Opens fridge What am I going to eat for dinner?
Takes out meat to defrost.
Dogs start barking.
Oh I have to go let them in it’s hot.
Who wants a treat!
Sits back down.
Checks phone.
Are you me?
I could be 😂
Just here to ask whether you went or yet or not (post says 3 hours ago and tbh I’ve had to pee that long too)
Edit to say beans, I found a comment that says you did. It inspired me to go pee as well 😂
I hate that this is such a thing for me. I procrastinate peeing so much, I'm pretty sure that's why I get urge incontinence sometimes. Sometimes I've had to go for long enough that I forget and then get up and it's like oh shit I gotta go.
you're not alone! my adhd definitely plays a significant part in my incontinence issues - i have urge/slight stress/oab.
whenever i first feel/register the need to pee, if im doing something, my adhd's own brain always decides that the task at hand is far more interesting and important than peeing, knowing full well that i cant hold for more than 10-20 mins. kinda like now.
i definitely try to be as mindful as possible, especially in public, but accidents still happen, a lot. mostly at home thankfully.
but yes, i definitely "procrastinate" needing to pee a lot. sometimes consciously, but most times not.
i would also attribute my nocturnal enuresis/bed wetting mostly to my adhd. largely cus it makes me dream in 8/10 of my sleeps, and they're usually lucid dreams which is usually coupled with pee dreams..
also, my adhd makes me ramble a lot so sorry for this long post xD
Don't apologize! Thank you for sharing, I feel less alone! It's one of those things that even being aware of doesn't seem to help because in the moment I don't seem to be able to access that awareness.
I also have some hormonal issues, so my incontinence gets progressively worse through my luteal phase and then hugely better after my period ends.
I have a connective tissue issue to mine is now bc otherwise, I’m 💀
I thought everyone held it until the last possible moment up until recently. I told someone and they were like um what lol
When I was in middle school we were reading a historical fiction book about slavery and a character said peeing with a full bladder was better than sex and I thought it was really weird. It weirded me out enough to make me get up immediately whenever I had to pee at school and getting out of class and getting to walk around was also a benefit.
Omg I hear you so much. I do this with other forms of discomfort too - like sitting on the sofa with something hard sticking into my back for example, and procrastinating about turning round and moving it; sometimes I KEEP MY BACKPACK ON for hours once I get home because it's too boring to take it off 😀
but if I stop to pee I'll forget what I was doing! Or find something in the bathroom I need to take care of and switch gears to that vs finishing the original task
I totally relate to this. I sit down to do something and realise I Have to pee bad.. ugh.
You should start doing the dishes. You will go pee 👍😺
Thank you for mentioning the dishes...it just reminded me that my partner asked me to do them while he is at the store and he's almost home now so I better get on it.
But I totally feel you. Why can't we just get up and move??
I pee often when I am procrastinating work. I hold it so long I pee my pants when I'd rather be doing something else.
Or, like with last night....how many short/quick dreams will i wake from, that were about being in the ocean, river, pond, swimming, diving, crashing waves on the beach?....
Me, making this same post:
"oh shite I have to piss like a racehorse.... ...... ouch...... I'm gonna order some cranberry pills and uti meds on Amazon!!"
sees shopping cart of 75 useless items on Amazon
.......... 3 hours later, "Oh yeah, I really had to piss! Yikes. I'll go in 5"
Love this. A daily struggle
