Backpacking through Colorado's San Juan Mountains
Very surprised there were 24 other people that lined up for that name before you.
The San Juans are wonderful. Was out there last year and day-hiked down to the Animas while my wife did some fly-fishing at a lake near the trailhead.
You're surprised that there are that many other Richard Poops out there? It is a very common name.
I have my first name and last name plus the number 11 as my email address. I do not have a common name. I tried FirstnameLastname1 and it was taken. Two, three, four, same deal. So it's a real struggle. Even for people with a traditional ... Dutch name? Poops is Dutch right?
Smash cut to a Dutch hit squad blowing up my house.
Poepen means shitting in Dutch Dutch.
Poepen means fucking in Flemish Dutch.
You can choose which side you are on.
This discussion about linguistics is really going to get me murdered, isn't it?
Poops is actually Scottish, but you were close!
Fucking hell, I apologize. History textbooks are littered with the names of people who died gruesomely after antagonizing the Scots.
This looks like a fantastic trip. Can you tell me what trails you took? Looking to do a similar trip later this year.
All I really remember was it was kind of a loop starting out of the Rio Grande reservoir.
I know this trail; it looked pseudofamiliar till I saw the giant bald cones and the slot. I love it, thanks for posting this & vid. You may be dickpoop25 but you'll always be my #1 ... #2.
Hey I know this is years old but it looks like you are still active I have been searching high and low for where exactly you took picture number 5, if you happen to still remember anything about where that was. Amazing hike!
I think that was moon lake or half moon lake or something like that!
Legend, thank you! If you have time to oblige, I’m a beginner packpacker, how hard is that cross over from moon and half moon lake to rock lake?
I climbed up there from Rock Lake and I was fat and out of shape at the time, so not too hard! It's steep but there is a social trail for most of it
Beautiful pics. How many days did you spend and what time of year?
Asking because I go SLOW! haha
Early July, I spent 4 days out there
No mountain goats? There were hundreds of mountain goats in Chicago Basin when I backpacked there.
No goats. Although they were everywhere when I was in the Gore Range.
Nice photos! Is it an established loop or did you make your own route? the San Juan’s are my favorite in Colorado. Such an amazing place
P.s: not to sound like an asshole but with Spanish being my first language I have two corrections (*sounding like an asshole already😂) Rio Grande is Big River in Spanish so you don’t need to add the river to Rio Grande and second San Juan means Saint John. San Juan’s don’t mean The Juans like you have in your video (which I def saved to watched later today)
Awesome trip. Would you be willing to share your trail map? Did you start at the Blue Lakes Trailhead?
Love that overlook of Rock Lake. Passed through there on a 55ish mile trip in July. Beautiful area, beetles suck.
That first pic looks like the lake right under Columbine pass.
I love the San Juan’s. We saw a pair of moose there several years back.
Columbine Pass is right by Chicago Basin, right? I was more north of that in the first pic...I'm not sure if that pass had a name (at least it didn't on my map)
Correct. And Chicago Basin, last time I was there, was full of goat that followed you everywhere.
Did Chicago Basin over the summer, the goats are still all over the place.
I’m so sorry.
kick ass, thanks for sharing. im a sanjo banjo
it does, and it's a higher elevation route if it's the one I'm thinking
Absolutely the best mountains in the lower 48.
The Cascades and the Sierras would like to have a word.
Having lived 15 years on the west coast and spent a significant time in the sierras, San Juan range blow them away
I was going to ask about if people felt they are the best. They certainly are in my experience
That area is one of my favorite places in the US.
I've hiked 150 miles of the Colorado Trail - jaw dropping scenery there - love the pics - thanks
Planning to hike the Colorado Trail in August, and can't wait!
Looks fantastic. Makes me miss hiking and fishing the Pinos River. Excellent fly fishing in that area. Granite lake is a blast if you get a chance.
Shhhh!!
I love living here.
yes. but its *really* hard to watch it burn sometimes...
And by the looks of it, there seems to be plenty of fuel in those dead pines, a fire is gonna absolutely rip through there if it lights
Green trees actually burn more than dead/dried trees.
um - the fire that destroyed the west side of rocky mtn was all dead trees and set records for speed, yo. source - thats my home - rawah neversummer gore ranges etc...op sorry for the jack, but yeah the dead trees burn faster then we thought based on the record fires last year before the record dry grass fire last week. you from up here ?
Yes, I am "from up here."
I also thought for the longest time that it was simple and obvious that dried / deadened trees burn faster / more. But science says no - the sap is what really fuels forest fires.
What is true is that dried/dead timber can be more immediately flammable - easier to start the burn, but not as catastrophic.
so oddly enough I was thinking about this and in all the cases I'm calling out the trees really had nothing to do with it - it was the winds.TIL...
edit I think you have it backwards ? the resin makes the green easier to light but the dry burns hotter and faster ? I mean if you were going to heat with it you don't go green...
Yeah, so my thing is that I got my info from a guy who is more or less dedicated to fire science and did a lot of research on the big Cali fires.
I've had a horrible day - I should go do a dive.
And FWIW, people don't burn green wood because of smoke and soot I think.
Soo pretty!!
How long until the hillsides are more green than brown? :(
The scree and rocks?
There are many trees that have been killed by beetles and they just stand up dead below tree level. They are widely considered an eyesore. I believe it is slowly getting better.
If it helps, I murder every bark beetle I see and display their corpse to send a message.
What time of year were these pictures taken? They are gorgeous!
This was early July
What trail were ya on?
No! The San Juan’s suck. Tell all your friends it’s terrible here.
What month did you go and were there many mosquitoes?
July and there were no mosquitoes. I think I was too early.
Oh wow there isn’t much snow either. Must’ve been a low snow year.
What a beautiful country
Would you mind sharing the name of this hike? Looks wonderful
Very little snow? Sad? Telluride better get some soon!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing.
So gorgeous! If I don’t do the PCT this year, the CDT will be a contender for a thru hike when I do eventually go on one of those trails
Awesome!
Love the San Juan’s. Hope you were able to fish.
I ate a packet of tuna if that counts
Awesome photos! Thanks for sharing!
You’re amazing man !
sup tent bro
This was from a 50 mile solo trip in the San Juan mountains. Had to deal with regular thunderstorms, getting caught between a bear with her cubs and a moose with her...moose cub? Angry ptarmigans that laid their eggs on the trail, hailstorms, crossing the Rio Grande river (despite the map saying there would be a bridge), poor signage and hitching a ride back to my car. Still was a pretty cool trip, you definitely felt like you were out there.
Video here if you're interested.
