Solo winter backpacking at Crater Lake National Park
Next time try a pulk when skinning in. It'll change your perspective on what you can bring. Like cozy camp boots. A longer shovel. Maybe even some firewood (I usually bring a gallon of water rather than firewood). Something to sit on. ...
What do you do with it when you're skiing down?
I usually leave everything at camp. Then come back for it and go home, or stay overnight again. Depends on how long the skin/ski is.
Ah yeah the problem with this is that I had to skin about 800 feet up to camp. For flat approaches, that would be great!
Oh you can totally ski down mild downhills with a pulk behind you. That's why you often see people with something like PVC pipe run from the front of the sled to their hips. It keeps the sled from running into you when you stop. And you criss cross then to make the sled turn easier.
I've done a fair amount of down with the sled. But anyt pitch over about 20 degrees is the limit.
Side hill traverse is harder but doable.
