I went on it yesterday, it was fun and all, but i am a young guy with 0 back problems and I came off that one clutching my ribs and back. Is it possible they’d make it smoother anytime soon
Would space mountain ever get refurbed or is it too “classic”
Attractions & EntertainmentThis is the way
Nooooo just say you wont ride it again whether you actually will or not. Your open complacency allows them to keep it going without refurbishment.
I can assure you, with every fiber of my being, my complacency will do NOTHING for the decisions on the behalf of house of mouse. We’re not even drops in the bucket.
Fair
Disneyland has already been completely redone, there's no reason disney world couldn't too.
Also Paris.
Just did Paris last month and Disneyland last year. Paris takes the top spot, followed by DL. DW is solidly in 3rd place of the three.
We just did Paris yesterday and after going to DW in January, Hyperspace Mountain absolutely wins in my eyes.
From the earth to the moon is leagues better. I cried after going on the hyperspace version after realizing how much of the physical theming was covered in black and screens for a clearly temporary overlay that’s lasted years
Let's just make them all Hyperspace Mountain
That is the absolute worst case scenario I’m not even joking.
Why do you say that? It is probably my favorite attraction and overlay of all Disney parks.
I've not been to the Hyperspace overlay at DL but the rode in Paris is fantastic with a loop and a corkscrew.
The loop was always there. It's not like they added it for Hyperspace Mountain (an overlay I really hate)
Personally I want them to keep it seasonal at least at Disneyland. I just love the Giacchino soundtrack too much, it fits so perfectly.
Overlay aside, a lot of the time the hyperspace mountain queue is super small for a rollercoaster.. possibly because it’s too intense for a lot of people so I’m guessing that’s what he might mean.
I love Hyperspace Mountain!
No. They should 1000% remove the hyperspace overlay from paris. They have the best space mountain in the world, it’s a waste to not have its original theme anymore
Florida loves leaving its rides in shambles
[Laughs in Matterhorn]
I never rode it before the 07(?) refurb. Was it similar to WDW before?
And Tokyo will be redoing there's as well, I believe it will be a whole new show building too but don't quote me
DLJ is still better than WDW.
I hope it's not too classic for a refurb. It's 15 years overdue.
No, no, you see, the refurb is classic.
It’s too classic to be replaced. But it is in NEED of a refurb.
I’d be totally down for a refurb! Not necessarily in the theming cause I think the all dark and lights and stuff is awesome, but it’s such a bumpy/uncomfortable ride. Honestly, once I rode Cosmic Rewind, space mountain just doesn’t hit the same
You’re absolutely right. I got off cosmic rewind and said it’s space mountain plus 40 years of technology. Both great space themed rides but cosmic rewind is just so much more smooth.
It’s truly so much better! Like I love space mountain but it’ll definitely have to be a ride that I only ride before cosmic rewind for all future trips 😂
This ride damn near gave me a free vasectomy. Made my "saddle walk" the rest of the day quite a sight I'm sure.
So with that said, put me down as a maybe.
Last time I rode it I got off with neck soreness that led to a terrible headache.
Me too! I decided that would be my last ride on space mountain 🥲
I think it's the fact that it's a bobsled style car with one person per row instead of two people per row. The shakiness is tighter.
Heck of a timing for this post with the other concussion post right now, lol
Space Mountain DL and WDW have seen several refurbishments. Most recently at DL it was closed for a couple months in 2023 and received updated visuals, graphics, and projections. WDW closed Space Mountain for over 6 months in 2009 and spent over 12 million dollars on a significant refurbishment. It's definitely a classic and beloved attraction, but refurbishments can often be a necessity for safety.
It has already BEEN refurbed and they changed the cars. The current ones suck compared to the original ones.
they godda do it again tho, people are getting hurt
I don't disagree. But the question was whether it was "too classic" to be refurbed. All I was saying is that it already isn't the actual classic ride.
oh okay
I always say It's a good ride if you need a chiropractic adjustment lol.
I posted about this lately on here. I said it was meant to get a retrack in 2014. I was wrong. It was due in 2008. The track is in such poor condition that they had to slow the ride vehicles down with extra brakes, which adds to the the already jerky nature of it. The ride needs work immediately.
Was just at Disney Paris and they tweaked it to a Star Wars theme and it honestly took away from the ride imo.
They had this at Disneyland when we were there in 2016 and it was pretty cool. Wasn't hugely different tbh.
The Paris one traded the nostalgia for a mediocre Star Wars theme that felt forced and did nothing for the ride itself (which actually was better than the Florida one, I did like the launch at the beginning more).
See, I thought the opposite. I thought it was a lot of fun, but I would say that it's closer to RnR than Space Mountain.
yes, and they didnt bother cganging anything in the queue which still has all the shooting for the stars cannon diagrams and such. The ride itself is still good but the overlay is poorly done.
I keep asking myself if that ride got jerkier over the past few years or I’m just getting older. I used to love that ride going on it multiple times in a row. On my last trip, on one of the turns I thought my neck was going to break. I’m sadly unlikely to go on it again even though I used to love it. Wish they’d keep the theming but update the track.
It needs it. They can refurb it without taking it away or retheming it. The question is WILL they?
The Disneyland one is so much better! I wish they'd just clone it for WDW. It's far less back breaking.
Disneyland local here. Completely disagree. While disneylands version is smoother and has audio, the track layout on WDW’s version makes it so much more fun. Disneylands track layout is very boring since all the vehicle does is make right hand turns for the most part
I concur.
Also Disneyland local, completely agree. Space Mountain at WDW is my favorite coaster now that the Comet Express is gone.
Comet Express was at Lotte World in South Korea. Think Space Mountain underground on a teacup, art designed by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. Greatest coaster of all time.
Have you ridden cosmic rewind? I mean I love space mountain but I don’t know about ranking it above cosmic rewind haha
100% agree. WDW is rough but so much more fun.
I LOVE the Star Wars refurb! All they did was add the Star Wars music and some laser lights, and it really adds to the experience without taking away anything that makes space mountain fun!
Wait, do you mean they also improved the mechanics?
Oh no, I meant the ride vehicles! They're super smooth at Disneyland whereas at WDW, you get knocked around, haha
I got knocked around at Disneyland about a year and a half ago. My doctor says I can’t do thrill rides til the fluid around my heart is gone.
omg that sounds horrifying. wishing u a speedy recovery
I hope they don’t - I like it how it is- feels like you are about to fall off the track lol
I think "indoor coaster in the dark named Space Mountain" is too classic to get rid of, but the current layout could be expendable.
I've never had a bad experience on SM it wasn't till I came to reddit I heard people calling it a bad experience 🤷♂️
Neither, I love it.
I certainly hope it receives a refurbishment soon given my partner suffered a concussion after riding it a few days ago.
How?
If this is the same person that made a post about it: sudden deceleration and then acceleration made their head hit a non cushioned part of the ride vehicle
Yeah, that's the gist of it.
Tokyo Disney is about to do a major update to theirs. May be something other parks look at after it is complete.
Does it need one? Absolutely. It needs at least resurfacing but given the fact that it’s a nearly 50 year old coaster it would probably just be easier to re-do entirely.
Will it? That’s a bit trickier. A project like that would require it to be down for months if not a year plus. It sucks up crowds in Tomorrowland and across the park. Maybe with Tiana’s open they’ll consider it but I bet it’s pretty low on the hit list since it’s still hitting 60+ minute waits daily for a coaster with a high throughput. Maybe when Tron comes off VQ but I feel like Disney will be resistant to shutting down a ride unless it’s numbers are down due to needing a face lift (guessing the case with Test Track), it’s throughput is far off its capacity (Universe of Energy) or it has PR problems (Splash Mountain)
As a coaster enthusiast who just visited Disney for the first time this year, I always laugh at these posts. I was expecting the worst on space mountain, but it was smoother than basically every wooden roller coaster in the entire world.
Well yeah, it’s steel, it should be.
i grew up on wooden rollercoasters, living literally 5 minutes from a park with three large coasters (and a duelling coaster too).
SM is rougher than these...
Lol obviously depends on the coaster. You should've ridden the ol mean streak at CP. Anyways, the main point I was conveying is that "Disney rough" seems to be rather tame in comparison to theme parks in general.
The Disneyland one was rebuilt.
Nothing is too classic for a refurb. It needs a re-tracking. I don’t see them changing it significantly.
It needs retracking using the same layout, but with better supports so it’s smoother like cosmic rewind. Adding a deeper star-wars theme at the same time including adding more visual barriers between sections to enable different views / projections and in vehicle audio (if not already implemented) so the music can be in sync with the ride position - much easier with today’s tech.
I suspect with modern cnc, and 3D scanning/modeling you could take it offline for a few days, and scan every inch of the structure to know where the mount points are, and then reconstruct it virtually, redesign a new track to match the existing pattern and mounts, and have it manufactured while the ride is in service. Then once all the steel is ready, shut it down, teat out the existing track section by section and replace with the new parts. It would need to be offline for a few months, but should be doable without having to destroy the iconic building, queue etc.
The cat chassis should probably also be replaced, either with completely new cars, or just replace the track interface to go with the new track. That can be done in parallel with the track replacement.
I wish it was smoother! I love rides similar to it, but the bumps really hurt and it makes me avoid it altogether.
If Tokyo and Disneyland can do it, Walt Disney World can do it.
They'll redo it once the wear and tear make it a necessity. Then they'll redo the entire ride and it'll be down for +12months while they rebuild and probably add screens like DL for overlays.
It seriously needs a retracking. If the rumors about BTMR getting refurbed are true though then it wouldn’t happen until after that. They aren’t going to have two prime rides out of commission at the same time.
So this is a hard question. Walt would want believe that anything and everything should be changed. In practicality it'd have to become quiet unpopular for it to happen as it's a really beloved ride.
I’ve been on SM at Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and WDW. It is definitely the worst Space Mountain. However, I think the better comparison is Matterhorn. It’s a similar ride system. In my opinion, it isn’t the worst Space Mountain. It is the best Matterhorn. 😂
I hope it never gets refurbished. I hope it stays the way it is until the end of time. The headache, near concussions, and worrying about your hands being chopped off if you raise them are all part of the experience. I'm getting sick of you softies.
It’s absolutely going to be upgraded at some point.
My Wife and I completely disagree on space mountain. I always feel awful when I get off and she loves it. She is 5’4” and I’m 6’3. Something about being tall on that ride makes it hurt.
I’m a little shorter at 6’0 and I’m always ducking because of the bars which probably doesn’t help either
I'm 5'5" and it hurt. Is 5'4" the limit for having a good time? 😂
I love Space Mountain but I am too old for the back-breaking, kidney bruising ride you get anymore. Let alone getting in and out. They need to do a total refurb and make it like DL's Space mountain.
Ask yourself: Did you really go on Space Mountain if you didn’t leave with a bruise?
I am not a young guy with many back problems and I came off that ride with even more back problems. It’s bumpy as fuck and sucks.
Omg it’s SO VIOLENT. I’ll never ride it again. I’m 6’5” and went in with 0 problems and spent the rest of the week in agony. It had to get an emergency chiro appointment in FLA before I flew home because I couldn’t hold my bladder I was in so much pain. Completely ruined my experience.
I’m 6’8”, rode up front, and it tweaked the heck out of my neck. If they could get rid of the brutal jerking for necks and backs, I’d love the ride way more
I have a 36” inseam and cannot fathom how you even fit. I was absolutely smashed in there.
Runner up was the Aerosmith rocking rollercoaster. That didn’t wreck me at all but my god fitting into the seats was brutal and involved some weird splaying.
Same. I’m not sure. I did ride upfront, which someone told me is the worst spot to ride in, or that’s what I was told.
I’ll tell you which ride I couldn’t do. That was Flight of the Passage. I was too tall for the ride, so I’m possibly out of Tron too

Way to rough and desperately needs an update
It’s the most terrifying ride at WDW because it’s so rickety. Definitely a fun experience you get nowhere else.
It is perfect as is!
We had to give up on it
disney likes ruining classics space will be up after thunder
I love Space Mountain and even tho it’d be sacrilege I’d actually be down for getting it transformed to be like the one in Paris.
This is one of the rides that I love at Disneyland and absolutely despise at MK for this reason.
Haha I road it yesterday too and it’s not getting any less brutal in its old age that’s for sure. There’s a lot of attractions I want to never change but I’d be fine with this one.
I’m so old I remember the SM cars in the 80’s where you used to sit down in someone’s lap.
I do and I don’t. I believe I watched something on the other Space Mountains, and they are different from the original at MK. I love the nostalgia of it, but for a roller coaster, it’s pretty brutal. It actually tweaked my neck last time I was at Disney.
If it was me, I think you could keep most of the ride intact, but I’d like to smooth it out (however that could be done), and look at adding some more space elements in the ride.
It needs a major refurb, not a replacement. What makes WDW’s Space unique from others in the line is the two track setup and that its layout is more unpredictable than those in California, Tokyo (currently) and Hong Kong. It also has this neat retro vibe that sets it apart from other versions. Retracking the ride (smoother but still follows its current course) and adding new projection effects like in California could make it even better than the other versions (except for Paris, which is like the spiritual successor). They don’t need to replace it with what they’re doing in Tokyo because Cosmic Rewind already has basically the same ride system that’s rumored to be in use - and it also has an outer space setting.
They need to retrack and change the vehicles to the two-wides like at DL
Its the same case with Matterhorn, but one has to wonder if they can even be refurbed, as the tracks are there without much ability to change them. More likely these rides go completely, and get a replacement ride like Tokyo’s Space Mountain. Of course, we all know that means many more years from now as these rides will have to be on their last legs (although I could argue they’re already there, Matterhorn+WDW Space Mountain are closed multiple times a year)
They are shutting the one down in Tokyo Disneyland and rebuilding it.
It will reopen in 2027:

Depending on what they do with it and how well it work, it would be a strong possibility!
It was scheduled over a decade ago to get a major overhaul like Disneyland got, but the budget ran out so they just did minor tweaks instead.
Honestly I just hope they do a retrack.
Give Space Mountain a major refurbishment. Disneyland Space Mountain is my favorite ride in the entire world and I definitely don’t think it needs to be the same thing at all, but WDW Space Mountain is overdue. Smooth out the track, do something to make it not like I’m going lose my arms if I put them up, and maybe add in-seat speakers to help with the situational audio.
Went 4 weeks ago. I have no idea what everyone is complaining about. I am 50.
It’s a lot less rough in the front, I was in the way back, do you remember what row you were in
Refurb is definitely not ruled out, iirc it’s gone under refurb/maintenance within the past 10ish years (but could’ve been way longer ago)
I did fine on the ride itself, but it gave me simple partial seizures for the next few weeks afterward. So, I feel like I have no choice but to avoid it from now on. Quite the bummer.
It's in the works to be completely retracked, but Big Thunder is first at bat
The Guardians ride at EPCOT is what Space Mountain should have been. Not with the Guardians theming, mind you, but the track
And is what the brand new Space Mountain in Tokyo will be (I am making an assumption here but it’s the same price as guardians was…)
Honestly ALL of Tomorrowland needs to be refurbished. Pretty much the entire thing feels like what people in the 50s thought the year 2000 might look like.
I was there in 2022, and when I rode TL Speedway, I couldn’t help but think, I don’t think these cars are the future anymore. I told my kids they really needed electric cars instead, or some other style, outside of gas.
yes, thats what retrofuture means
While it should be refurbished, thr fact it's considered a classic means it probably won't happen because Disney hate taking classics out of circulation and changing them in WDW. It's an ideology which is grossly out of date.
If they refurbished it, I hope they bring back the used spaceship salesman. I miss the goofy videos.
Space mountain is terrible. Tron is the ride that space mountain should be.
Cosmic rewind is basically space mountain + 50 years of development
That was my most favorite ride last week. It was soo good!
Space already got replaced by Tron and Guardians. My hot take is gutting the whole building and creating a space themed indoor section like Mermaid Lagoon at DisneySea.
I bet they wait a bit and put in the new Tokyo version of space mountain (which I have to believe is going to be based on guardians)
Where would they put the ride building?
There was a bump on this ride that all 6 of us on the coaster groaned in discomfort 😂 11/10 will absolutely ride again, though.
