New Start or Summer Session?

Hi guys, I'm an incoming freshman and wanted to know which is better: the New Start Program or the summer session. Just want to know different perspectives!

Off campus housing being annoying

Hi! I’m an incoming freshman and trying to set up an off campus housing profile, however when I try to add a picture of myself it comes out blurry no matter what I do, the image itself is being compressed to a size that is impossible for it to actually be put in as such (if that makes sense) what can I do about this?

PHYS 141 LabQuestions

I'm taking Phys 141 in the fall with Tai Kong and I was wondering if we get a free absence for the lab (meaning you don't have to provide proof you had an excuse)? We had this for ochem 2nd semester so I'm hoping it's the same here.

Sunscreen Recommendations Please

I'll be moving to Tucson for Fall '24 and have heard that the sun can be quite harsh there. Could you recommend any good sunscreens for daily wear?

Incoming finance major

Hello! I'm an incoming international student at UA and I want to study finance at the College of Eller.

I was wondering what I should know going into finance, class choices, what opportunities are available to me and generally what information is crucial for my success in finance in the future. If you have experience with finance at UA, it'd be great if you shared it. Thank you!

Should I be hearing more from the university as someone starting a grad program this fall?Questions

I keep seeing posts talking about orientation and what classes to take, and as someone coming in to U of A this fall all I know is that there is going to be a “new student orientation” I have to attend sometime in August. All communication I’ve had with the school so far since getting accepted I have been the one initiating the conversation. Is there communication I am missing? I don’t even know what classes I have to take or when do I sign up for them. I’m coming in from outside the US so I don’t know how things are done here. We’re 2 and a half months away from the start of the fall semester, so I don’t know if it’s too early or too late for this kind of stuff.

Honors Quest Project/Undergrad ResearchQuestions

Hi all! I'm an incoming 'transfer' student (Applied as a freshman, but I have an A.S. in Biology), and I'm reaching out here to see if anyone here has done the Honors Quest project or something of that sort, such as undergrad research in your first year. For context, I'm a biochem major (not premed - research path) and I'm also asking on behalf of a physics/math major transfer student.

Was it worth it? What about presenting at Pinnacle? Did it give you valuable experience and exposure for the thesis? What about networking and working with professors? Was your mentor able to make the research accessible and let you do your own project?

Also, as a wider question, how easy would it be to get into a professor's lab for just general research or for a thesis?
Thank you so much!!!

(Edit: added more/clarification)

I need some help Questions

I still owe money to the school for when I tried applying the first time, I can’t get into the portal because my school email doesn’t work and I’m not sure what to do or who to talk to, i really need to pay my fees and apply for aid so I can go to school, does anyone know who I should talk with to get that taken care of?

Looking for a specific type of apartment/place to liveHousing

A friend of mine will be a grad student at the University of Arizona in the fall and I’m helping her look for housing. We’ve heard the areas south of campus may be more crime prone (not sure if that is true). She needs to find a dog friendly place to live. Her dog is the sweetest boy and is about 50 lbs, so someplace with a grassy area or near a dog park would be ideal. While she’s fine living by herself she’s also fine with a roommate. She has a car so it doesn’t need to be right on or near campus. The biggest thing is safety (yes, I know no place can guarantee no crime, but clearly some places are probably safer than others). Other things that are important is it being quiet, not buggy/mousey and ideally having garage or covered parking (or if neither at least in a place where car break ins aren’t common). Any suggestions would be super helpful and appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

Apartments to avoid?Questions

I’m looking for an apartment starting on the Fall semester. The ideal for me would be to be close to the university as I will be taking public transit, hopefully close to a stop and to not have to switch buses on route. I’ve been looking East of the university between Speedway and 5th, and while I’ve seen some apartments that look good under 1k for a 1BR, I feel like every place I look there’s always a review that makes me second guess. Are there any apartments I should avoid? And does anyone have any recommendations for my situation that I’ve described? It doesn’t have to be in the area I mentioned, but it should hopefully be less than an hour away from campus taking a bus.

Are there more upperclassman living in dorms then before?

I know dorms are mostly a majority of freshman and some sophomore's, but I feel like there are more juniors and seniors living in dorms then before. is this accurate? I feel like dorms might now be more cost efficient with housing being so limited and getting overpriced,

Alternatives to paying for parking permit?Questions

I’m starting my doctorate at U of A this fall! I’ll be living on the northeast side of Tucson. I looked online and saw that parking permits are a pretty penny. Are there any good loopholes around that? Perhaps somewhere I could park for free and then hop on the streetcar? Help! Any advice welcome! :) Thank you!

Advice: Choosing Electives for Data Science Career

Hi everyone,

I'm starting the second year of my Master's in Machine Learning at ISchool and considering some electives from the MIS (Masters in Information Systems) program to broaden my skills. I'm aiming to enhance my profile for a career in data science and need some advice on which courses might be the most beneficial. Here are my options:

  1. Eller Business Consulting - Offers practical consulting experience but seems less technical.
  2. Enterprise Data Management - Focuses on data governance and architecture, which seems crucial for managing large datasets.
  3. Project Management - Useful for managing teams and projects but not directly technical.
  4. Business Intelligence - Covers data analysis and visualization to drive business decisions, seems highly relevant.

I'm leaning towards Business Intelligence for its direct relevance to data science and Enterprise Data Management for foundational data handling skills. What do you think? Which course would best complement my machine learning background for a future in data science?

Appreciate any insights or experiences you can share!

best/worst things to bring to dorms?Questions

incoming freshman with a lot of anxiety about what to bring to college. for context, im planning to live in Yuma (third floor/no elevator) with community style bathroom. also hoping to loft my bed and make a cozy nook under it (are beanbags allowed? I really want a big ol bean bag.) Anyways im trying to figure out any necessities I should bring that I might overlook, and what will only waste space that I should leave at home. any input is valued. thanks!

Which school to choose to land a tech job?

About me:

I’m an international student from Asia and I don’t have a green card. I majored in EECS and focused on two tracks- IC chip design and controlling system during college. On top of that. I’ve also worked on two big medical-image-recognition projects that based on Deep Learning and two small bioengineering projects that involved with a device that detected patients’ blood leak.

My offers:

I’ve gotten masters offers from three schools. (2024 Fall)

  1. Santa Clara U, MS in computer science and engineering.
  2. Arizona State U, MS in computer engineering.
  3. U of Arizona, MS in electrical and computer engineering.

My plan:

My ultimate goal is to land a a tech job in the states. However, given the extremely competitive market in software engineering, I’ve planned to work on a different field other than SE. I’m thinking of designing processors for AI models, or just IC chips.

That being said, I think I might just go and start do research with a prof upon getting into grad school and apply for PhD on the way to further study about the mentioned topic and have a better job security, considering that it is very unlikely for foreign grad students to land a job with this economy.

My Question:

So my question is that which school should I choose ? SCU is close to Silicon Valley while ASU is close to TSMC and Intel(and ASU seems to have more courses/profs in the mentioned field🤔).

Please feel free to share your experiences and thoughts, as well as how the PhD plan seems. Should I just go straight job hunting as soon as I enter grad school and hope that I can find a job or at least an internship by the time I graduate? What EECS job can I get with this MS degree if I’m not going with software engineering?

Sorry if the post is too long, I would really need some clarity rn😭🙏

Thank you guys in advance, much love !!!

Discussion about professorsQuestions

I am going to apply for a PhD program at this school and I am looking into potential faculty mentors. If someone could give me any information on these professors (whether it is about their character, or how they teach, etc good or bad) I would appreciate it, thank you so much!

Nightmare scenario come trueQuestions

So apparently the summer course I enrolled in, which I thought was a 5 week course that started next week, is a 7 week course that started 2 weeks ago. The first email from the professor came out tonight and it was talking about homework 2. I immediately reached out to the professor and all she said is that they’ve already taken an exam and I won’t be able to make it up. Does anybody know if there’s anything I can do? I’m currently in good standing academically and I don’t want a W on my transcript.
