Does Dcfc have any plans to build a stadium in downtown Detroit?
ChampionshipThe way you said that last part has me imagining some insane DCFC compound.
Ideally it would include a training ground that the men, women and youth could use.
Yeah but it’s cool that all the stadiums are right near each other
MLS tried to do it and got swindled. Hard to imagine the USL ownership having the bandwidth to pull that off.
Didn’t they try to use the Lions stadium?
Yep, Dan Gilbert pulled a bait-and-switch. He promised to build a soccer stadium on a plot of land he'd been trying to acquire from the city for years. Once they finally gave it to him he switched up the plans, pulling in the Ford family and trying to use the Lions stadium for the MLS team instead, while deciding to put some other more lucrative development on the other land.
Fuck Dan Gilbert. He suuuuuuuuucks.
bet it's going to happen when the lease runs out at Keyworth. City government doing city government things. I would love to see it built by the old train station that Ford is fixing up and the Field of dreams.
If they do build, I hope they keep the theme from the city and keyworth and not build out a modern looking stadium
Corktown would be cool, but land there is so expensive.
lol the day Detroit has a proper soccer stadium it’s gonna be built on waste land in Macomb or Southfield or some craptacular suburb like that
You just got your wish, or rather will in a few years

I've been hearing the rumors about this for the last couple of weeks and I'm still in shock that this light actually happen. I'm so excited!
I hope not. That's my favorite stadium in the league.
A bleacher seat public school stadium is your favorite in all of uslc?
Environment matters. I love Lou City but having empty seats at the top and a half-filled supporters section, even with 10k in attendance, can be a bummer. Keyworth fills out and shows out.
We see this at Louisville football games too. That’s just our fanbase. When they play big games we fill up the stadiums. LouCity plays in a championship they fill it up. They filled it up at Slugger Field when we hosted the championships. Louisville fans show up for winners. Even our volleyball and women’s Bball team fills up well when they’re winning. We also haven’t learned to show up in crummy weather. If it’s cold or going to rain and the game isn’t a big one, people don’t show.
This is true lol
It's not the best stadium, but it has character and at least some history behind it unlike the majority of US soccer. It's not like Keyworth is Providence Park or something, but I much rather go to a game there then somewhere like Loudoun. Segura field may be new, but it's also in the suburbs and feels very artificial.
Keyworth can also fit almost 8,000 people in it so it fills the need they have at this level.
In loudouns case they were originally a developmental team for DCU I’m sure if they had started out independent they wouldn’t necessarily be in that location and I’m sure the stadium itself would look better.
A historic stadium in a unique neighborhood renovated largely through the work and investment of City’s fans, who have created an unmatchable gameday atmosphere.
Ngl that’s gonna be tough when they do get a new place because I can’t see anyplace replicating the Keyworth vibes and charm.
And we have trains!
Quality of seat is hardly something I look for in a soccer stadium. In fact you could argue that a bleacher seat encourages more standing and with cheering, chanting, etc.
You gotta experience a DCFC home game to understand. I’ve refereed a few, some as AR2 in front of the Northern Gaurd, 100% an experience you don’t forget
No
I think it’d be funny af if they wound a way to build it at the site that Duggan/Gilbert were looking at but probably wishful thinking
I think Keyworth lease is up in 25… I’d love to see a new stadium nearish to existing clubhouse, perfect spot to pregame/rally for marching. Ideally I’d take a page out of Pittsburgh’s book and build the edge of the river. No space for that by the club house outside of city land…
Even as a neutral, a Pittsburgh-style stadium in Detroit would be sick to see
IF someone comes along and decides to give the team $100 million for a stadium without asking anything in return, oh yeah they'd do it in a heartbeat. But their ownership's collective net worth is less than the construction price of like, Louisville's stadium, which is considered a budget deal. And the cost to buy out Keyworth would probably not be much cheaper given the school district would need to turn around and build a replacement immediately.
should just modernize there original stadium
They don't own it the public school system does
i feel like it wouldnt ve that much to buy it from the public school system
It's less the expense to buy it, and more the school's not seeing a need to sell.
A part of it is protected from renovations on historical grounds. Can’t touch the wall on one end, which is pretty limiting. And can’t expand outward on another side because of the neighborhood, which is even more.
build up like an old classic football stadium
Boca Detroiters
We’d be just like Luton Town’s Kennilworrh Road. Which to me is cool as fuck. I love an old school English style stadium.
Keyworth forever ⚜️⚽️💪
What about anything or will the be staying at school owned stadium.
I remember some supporters group calling it all sorts of things
Yea it's kind of underwhelming, Detroit is one of the most notable cities in the league along with indianapolis and louisville they should definitely be in a new built stadium like indy and loucity.
I feel like you don't have the right expectations for how USL clubs fund these things.
Louisville's stadium cost $65 million. Indy 11's stadium apparently cost $87 million. When DCFC did their community crowdfunding to renovate Keyworth, it raised less than $1 million.
A brand new stadium would be nice but I have no expectations for DCFC to raise $60 million out of nowhere.
Can the owners not pay for it? Louisville and Indy didn't crowd fund their stadiums
The owners are DCFC are regular guys who started the team in a rec soccer league because they realized that the NPSL expansion fee was a few thousand bucks and wanted to try and start a team.
When they moved to USL they needed somebody to pay the expansion fee so they added an owner who is a millionaire but it's still a long way to go before anyone can afford $60 million for a stadium.
The stadiums in both Louisville and Indianapolis were, at least in part, paid for through public funding. I would hope that DCFC would not go that route, as study after study has shown that the promised economic benefits never materialize.
For a club so focused on the community, it'd be a shame to see it taking tax money to build a stadium rather than letting those dollars be used for other purposes in a city and county that desperately needs all the cash it can get.
Louisville and Indy put up a substantial amount of money it's not like either city were the primary funders. The city of louisville made it clear they weren't going to pay and own the stadium
I went to Louisville last weekend and TBH that new stadium felt hollow and soulless. Give me Keyworth and all the ghosts every day.
I enjoyed Louisville’s stadium, and once we inevitably outgrow Keyworth… I’d be happy if it felt like that, but hopefully right-sized for crowds. Empty seats are what are soul sucking.
Louisville feels like a stadium. It's nice and has amenities. It's no super stadium but it's a great set up.
I hadn't felt further from the field since I'd been in Indianapolis, and I damn near had to take out a second mortgage to pay for concessions. At least the tickets were cheap, I guess.
Last weekend when it was rainy cold and wet? Next time go when they play indianapolis when they have 12-14k ppl there
What a shame that Louisville fans couldn't be bothered to show up for a playoff game because it was a little wet.
A hell of a lot of us from Detroit didn't seem to be bothered by it.
Sorry we're spoiled😂
Downtown? No and TBH I think DCFC would have a much better chance getting much cheaper land outside of Downtown. Detroit truly is a massive city land wise and I would love to see more investment outside of Downtown. A lot of locals would probably feel the same way. I would imagine somewhere on the eastside since our Fieldhouse is on the eastside.
We plan on knocking down the Ren Cen so we can have a cooler stadium than Pittsburgh. I can’t wait!!!
Detroit is so beautiful
Keyworth is the best stadium in the league.
https://www.detcityfc.com/news/2024/05/16/dcfc-acquires-land-for-stadium/
"Detroit City Football Club has acquired the site of the former Southwest Detroit Hospital at the corner of Michigan Avenue and 20th Street for the purpose of building a new stadium that will serve as a permanent home for soccer in Detroit, with a goal of opening a new soccer-specific stadium by the club’s 2027 season."
I’m telling you right now. It’s not going to happen, and I think if you’re a fan, you should probably get a little worried now to save yourself for the suddenness of all it
Even when the club does eventually move on from Keyworth (it's going to be awhile before it happens) I'd be surprised if their new stadium was downtown. Land is prohibitively expensive in that area.
Detroit is a huge city with lots of open land outside of the downtown core. It's more likely that they'd build out in the neighborhoods somewhere.
